Bowman Gray Stadium race ends in absolute chaos, with one driver jump-kicking a competitor's car

Just your average father-son vs. father-daughter conflict at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem, North Carolina. (Photo by Grant Halverson/NASCAR via Getty Images) North Carolina's Bowman Gray Stadium has seen some of the weirdest and wildest races in the world of auto racing, but Saturday might have been a new peak (or low). Driving the No. 8 car in a 20-lap street stock race, Kyler Staley was a step ahead of Brad Lewis in the final stretch and seemingly about to win, when his father decided to help out. Sitting far enough behind the leaders to be just ahead of the finish line, Zack Staley slowed down in front of Lewis to try to swing the result. Advertisement It didn't work out. It was actually Kyler who slowed down more, while Lewis surged between father and son for the win. And then it got stupid. Lewis' daughter Emilee had been trailing behind the leaders in the final lap and apparently didn't appreciate Zack Staley's attempt to sabotage her father, as she drove straight into him and spun him out after crossing the finish line. Both of the Staleys were visibly livid. When Brad Lewis was given the checkered flag as the winner, Kyler ran out of his car to confront him, but Lewis just drove away. Kyler got into it with Emilee Lewis, and then Zack ran across the infield and jump-kicked the windshield of her car in a scene straight out of "Talladega Nights." Advertisement After the kick, Zack started ripping up the hood until the police intervened. As he walked away, he issued a middle-finger salute behind him. Then his son climbed on his own car and did the same. The official results were Brad Lewis first, Kyler Staley second, Emilee Lewis third and Zack Staley 14th in a 21-car race. It is unclear what consequences await the drivers involved.

Ryan Blaney gets "caught up in other people's garbage" at Atlanta

While the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion is locked into the playoffs, the year has still been an up-and-down one for Ryan Blaney. On Lap 58, the intensity was picking up as the field raced toward the end of Stage 1. Christopher Bell ended up losing control, spinning sideways. Advertisement A handful of cars were collected including Bubba Wallace, AJ Allmendinger and Austin Dillon, but Blaney thought he was going to be okay. However, he got clipped on his way by and took the hardest hit of anyone as the No. 12 Team Penske Ford slammed the outside wall. He will finish 40th -- last place. After being released from the infield care center, Blaney said of the incident: "I couldn't see much. They kind of started spinning and coming down. I tried to get to the apron and by the time I got there, kind of got blocked. "Yeah, like you (the reporter) said, the story of our year. Just getting caught up in other people's garbage. Just when we get it going pretty good and find some momentum, we don't seem to have things go our way." And while Blaney never returned to the race, Bell did, albeit more than 70 laps down. Advertisement A few laps later, NASCAR actually had to red-flag the race after a far bigger incident broke out on the backstretch, collecting 23 cars. Blaney also failed to finish the races at Phoenix, Las Vegas, Homestead, Talladega, and Charlotte. Last year, he had seven DNFs throughout the entire season and he's nearly matched that, halfway through 2025. Carlos Sainz Sr. Confirms He's Not Running To Lead Auto Racing Governing Body

Carlos Sainz Sr. has confirmed he won't run for the presidency of the FIA–the governing body for auto racing series like Formula 1. The 63-year-old Sainz, the father of F1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr., announced Wednesday that his decision followed months spent trying to understand in depth the situation at the FIA, as well as the demands and complexities of the job. 'After a thoughtful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that the present circumstances are not ideal to set the grounds for my candidacy,' the two-time World Rally champion wrote in a statement on Instagram. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem currently has no opposition to his re-election bid ahead of December's vote. Ben Sulayem, elected to the post in 2021, has faced criticism over his management. In April, Robert Reid resigned as FIA deputy president for sport in protest at how the organization is run. Ben Sulayem has also been at odds with F1 drivers over his crackdown on swearing.
