Bulldogs top pick privately ‘bawling eyes out' as truth of sad saga emerges

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has shared the devastating moment he 'hit rock bottom' after making a return to the Bulldogs this month.
The former No. 1 draft pick has for the first time confirmed he checked himself into a mental health facility in a key step towards reviving his AFL career.

The 23-year-old last week returned to the football club after being granted an indefinite leave of absence to manage personal issues.
He has not played a game since 2024.
Ugle-Hagan has now shared details of how he has taken steps towards playing in the AFL again after hitting 'rock bottom'.
In an emotional interview with Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson on the Rip Through it podcast published on Saturday, Ugle-Hagan said he at one point had suicidal thoughts frequently.
In a tell-all interview, Ugle-Hagan made several eye-catching comments, including:
— His desire to play for the Bulldogs before the end of the 2025 season.
— His commitment to see out his contract with the Bulldogs through to the end of the 2026 season.
— One of his coping mechanisms was to 'get on the p*** with mates'.
— He at times did not want to leave his house; AND
— He was privately rocked by the public racist abuse he received during the 2023 season.

The star forward was racially abused by a spectator in a game between the Dogs and St Kilda in 2023 and he responded the next week booting five goals.
He famously pointed to his skin in a brave public stance against racism after kicking one of those goals.
While publicly, that appeared to be the end of it, Ugle-Hagan has revealed the incident privately rocked him.
'I was angry (about the abuse), sad, and behind doors I was bawling my eyes out. It affected me heaps,' he said.
'Then I was even embarrassed. I said nothing and did nothing. I just didn't want to go out in public.

'I went out there (the following week) and kicked the first goal and the last and kicked five.
'I was going to point to my mouth guard because it is indigenous colours, but I pointed at my skin and pulled up my jumper and it was the best feeling ever.
'The boys and the team f*** they made me feel good.'
He said he has been battling many issues with his mental health.
'All the noises actually sent me to a rehab facility for my mental health,' Ugle-Hagan said.
'It got to a point where I had to give my car to a mate so I couldn't drive, I just didn't trust myself driving.
There were times when I would think about – to be honest with you – just not even worth even living.
'I went through a struggle where I didn't want to leave the house. I hit rock bottom, and found basement.
'Definitely (there were suicidal thoughts). Suicidal thoughts would come pretty frequently.
'Especially when I felt like I was on my own the whole time. The way I was isolated and put out in public.'
He said he at times was not interested in football and at times could not see a way for him to return to playing the game at an elite level.
'When you are down you want to keep finding an upper. My upper was probably staying and hanging out with my mates and getting on the p*** and training with them as well,' he said.
'But it just had no end goal, I didn't have a game. I didn't have anything.
'My mental health wasn't in the right space so I was struggling, and I found it really tough to even enjoy football.
I lost the fun in it. I didn't want to play, it wasn't even a priority because all I wanted to do was find something.
'But I didn't know what that was until I have had this break.'
He said the stay at the retreat had helped change his life.
It was reported earlier this month Ugle-Hagan has ambitions to play for the Swans next year, but he said on the podcast he has not thought about a trade.
He had trained sparingly with AFL — and at times VFL — teammates before his official leave of absence began in late April.

Up first, he may still only be raw, but 27-year-old featherweight prospect Jose Miguel Delgado delivered the finish of the night as he sent Hyder Amil crashing to the canvas on the preliminary card. Delgado, who secured a second-round TKO of Ernie Jaurez on the Dana White Contender Series to earn a UFC contract, now has two first-round finishes in the promotion. The American made light work of Connor Matthews in his UFC debut but was even quicker to dispose of Amil on Sunday in under 30 seconds. First, Delgado scored to the body and then partially landing a left hook before a brutal knee up the middle sent Amil down. Delgado was the quick to go to the ground and pound as referee Marc Goddard stepped in to stop the fight. Then, in the featured bout on the prelims, a patient Gregory Rodrigues waited for his moment to put Jack Hermansson out in terrifying fashion. It was a brutal left hook from Rodrigues in the final 40 seconds of the first round that sent Hermansson crashing to the canvas and referee Herb Dean wasn't quick enough to step in to stop the Brazilian before he landed a hammer fist to well and truly finish it. Although plenty of people in the MMA world felt like Rodrigues didn't need to even go in for the second shot in the first place, with Joe Rogan noting in commentary that Hermansson was 'out cold'.

NRL star to comes out of Origin retirement for Qld Maroons in Game 3
Queensland are reportedly set to make a stunning selection call for the State of Origin decider, with veteran prop Josh Papalii set to be a shock inclusion for Game 3. According to Code Sports, Papalii is expected to come out of Origin retirement and be named on Maroons coach Billy Slater's team sheet on Monday morning. The beloved prop is enjoying a fairytale season, having recently scored in his 300th NRL game for Canberra as the Raiders chase their first premiership in 31 years. His strong form at club level has put him back on Slater's radar and Papalii is tipped to start for Queensland in Game 3 in Sydney on July 9. Papalii is being backed to start the game with a 25-minute burst at prop alongside Tino Fa'asuamaleaui. Code Sports reports Titans prop Mo Fotuaika is set to be dropped to make way for Papalii's unlikely return to Queensland's starting side. The shock selection call will add grunt and fear factor to the Maroons, who are aiming to clinch an unlikely series win and claim a third Origin shield in four years. An injury to Kalyn Ponga has also opened the door for Reece Walsh to return for Queensland, while Hamiso Tabui-Fidow has pressed his case for the No. 1 jersey with a four-try outing for the Dolphins. The surprise selection news is in stark contrast to NSW, who have named an unchanged 17 for Game 3. NSW's forward pack came under scrutiny in Perth, with Max King's position at starting prop under question following the injury to Mitch Barnett that left a hole in the team. Stefano Utoikamanu's spot in the team was also seen as under threat, but Daley has stuck to his guns, ignoring calls to bring Rabbitohs gun Keaon Koloamatangi or Tigers recruit Terrell May in to do a job at prop. Richmond's Tom Lynch takes ‘big swing' at opponent with old school haymaker
Richmond forward Tom Lynch can expect a lengthy stint on the sidelines after he unleashed an old fashioned haymaker on an Adelaide Crows player on Sunday. Adelaide defeated the Tigers by 68 points at the MCG to consolidate their position in the top four. Lynch was not enjoying the close attention of Crows defender Jordan Butts, giving away five free kicks to have an AFL Fantasy score of -15 at one stage. Late in the first quarter, Lynch lashed out at Butts after a marking contest, turning and whacking Butts across the face/head area, prompting him to fall to the turf in pain. The umpire blew a free kick and Lynch engaged in some further argy bargy with Crows players. 'He actually got reported for the second punch – that first one was a free kick against. 'He gets in the scuffle again. He punches again. That's where the umpire comes in and reports him on the spot.' Dermott Brereton said: 'He's taken a big swing.' Footy reporter Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy: 'He's in plenty of trouble. 'I asked Tom Lynch a month ago about his reputation as a tribunal regular. 'He said 'I've been suspended for two weeks across my whole career' – I think he's likely to double that. 'He does make contact there with Butts. You'd hate to think he could have followed through and really got him hard. 'It's clearly intentional, behind the play. Maybe it's high impact. 'The look of that strike is something (MRO's) Michael Christian factors in too. 'He's had scuffles with other players as well – I don't think there's a lot in those. 'It goes without saying, he's got to be better than that. His coach would be shattered – sometimes when it's not going your way you've got to suck it up.' Lynch told Seven post-game: 'I didn't want to cause harm or anything like that, I was just trying to get free and the frustration came out. 'I gave away too many free kicks and was not good enough as a leader; said at halftime sorry boys, thought we were playing pretty well in that second quarter and it pretty much stopped the momentum. 'I was just more frustrated with how he was defending me, I thought. And clearly it was within the rules because there were no free kicks awarded to me and I went outside the rules. I've got to be better.'
