Lancashire to honour Farokh Engineer and Clive Lloyd with stands at Old Trafford
"It is a fitting honour for the both legends of the club," said the source. In 175 matches between 1968 and 1976, the 87-year-old Engineer made 5942 runs, took 429 catches and effected 35 stumpings for Lancashire.Two-time World Cup-winning West Indies skipper Lloyd, on the other hand, transformed the fortunes of the club after arriving as an overseas player in the early 1970s.When the Mumbai-born Engineer made his Lancashire debut, the club had not any major title for more than 15 years but he helped them lift the Gillette Cup four times between 1970 and 1975.Both Engineer and Lloyd would be immortalised in Lancashire history later this week. Interestingly, Engineer doesn't have a stand named after him at Brabourne Stadium where he played most of his cricket."They were incredible times, and Old Trafford was a marvellous place to be. People would come for miles to see us play," Engineer had told the club website a few years ago."From the Old Trafford dressing room we could see Warwick Road railway station and before the game we would see packed trains emptying the passengers on the platform. We could hear the chanting and the excited chatter and laughter," he recalled.Engineer also remembered receiving fan mail during his heydays."It was amazing, our lockers would be stuffed full of requests for autographs and invitations to parties. Everyone in England was talking about that great team, names like Clive Lloyd, Harry Pilling, Peter Lever and Ken Shuttleworth," he said."That buzz lasted for years and we were the most famous one-day team in the land."After retirement, Engineer made Manchester his home and continues to live here till date. Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, who is here on a personal visit, is also expected to attend the ceremony alongside the senior officials of the club.- EndsMust Watch

Skipper Harmanpreet helps India clinch ODI series against England by 2-1
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur spilled the beans about the plans and blueprint that she followed diligently to find her lost mojo, especially months before the Women's ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held back home from September 30. The series was level at 1-1 as the game headed to Chester-le-Street for the third and final ODI. With a sublime cover drive, Harmanpreet found the boundary rope off left-arm spinner Linsey Smith to get off the mark on her 11th delivery. The experienced star's century was her seventh in ODIs but her first in the format in 13 innings. Since her blistering 54 in the 50-over warm-up match against an ECB Development XI at the start of the tour, her top score in either of the white-ball series against England stood at 26, which came in the fourth T20I. "In all the matches, I wanted to give my best in batting, but today's game was very important to us. The plan was to spend some time on the wicket and then see how things go. That really worked for me. The first [ten] balls, I didn't get any runs, but then I was just talking to myself: I'm not going to lose myself, just be there, be there for the team," Harmanpreet said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. She walloped a century in 84 deliveries, bettering her 87-ball effort against South Africa last year to set a new record for the second fastest century in the format for her country. Her efforts are only surpassed by stylish opener Smriti Mandhana's 70-ball hundred against Ireland earlier this year. The Indian skipper also became just the third from her country to go past 4000 runs in women's ODIs. While the Indian skipper took the centre stage with the bat, 21-year-old seamer Kranti Goud stole the limelight with his sizzling six-wicket haul in her fifth ODI appearance. She returned with figures of 6/52 as England packed their bags on 305 with one ball left to play and 13 runs shy of the 319-run target. Goud became the second-youngest to scalp a five-wicket haul after Deepti Sharma in the women's ODIs. "She's been really impressing whenever she was on the field and bowling for the team. I'm really happy with the kind of bowling she did today, and whenever we needed a breakthrough, she was there for the team," Harmanpreet said of Goud. India's 318/5 was the second-highest score by a visiting team in England, behind their 333/5 in Canterbury in 2022. It was India's fifth 300 or more total in ODIs in 2025. India will face a much sterner assignment, a three-match ODI series immediately before the World Cup. However, Harmapreet is keen to take the positives out of the tour, which included a 3-2 T20I series win as well. "I'm really happy. All the girls, they're coming up with a positive mindset and working really hard on their fitness. We have understood a lot of things in the past few years, and right now we're just trying to pass that benchmark and set ourselves into that position where people can talk about women's cricket. People can take a women's cricket really seriously back home because we all know how much people love cricket back home, and they also want us to do well," she concluded.

Karthi eyes India comeback after key learnings on Europe tour with India A
Bengaluru, Jul 23 (PTI) Tamil Nadu forward Karthi Selvam is hopeful of earning a recall to the Senior India men's hockey squad after gaining valuable experience on the recent India 'A' tour of Europe, which he believes has boosted his chances of donning national colours again. Karthi, who last represented the senior India side at the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai in 2023, said the exposure and the specific inputs he received from the coaching staff have given him fresh belief to push for a place in the core group. 'The recent India 'A' tour to Europe has instilled fresh hope for India comeback for me," Karthi stated in a Hockey India release. 'It's going to be two years since I last wore the India colours and there've been a lot of learnings for me in this tour which had a combination of young players and those who have played for India," he added. The India 'A' squad is now back at the SAI centre in Bengaluru, where they will train alongside the senior core group and be in contention for selection for the upcoming Australia tour and the Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar next month. Karthi's return to the probables was prompted by a strong showing for Tamil Nadu Dragons in the revamped Hockey India League earlier this year, which impressed the selectors enough to include him in the national camp and the development squad under coach and former India striker Shivendra Singh. The India 'A' side began the tour brightly with back-to-back wins over Ireland (6-1 and 6-0) and a win and a loss against France (3-2 and 0-2). They ran England close in a narrow 2-3 defeat, before going down 1-3 to Belgium and 0-3 and 2-8 to the Netherlands. 'We started the tour very well and the match against England was also quite close. But we couldn't finish the tour on a high with the Netherlands posing stiff competition. Overall, it was a top experience for us," he said. The young forward credited the coaching team for helping him refine his game, particularly on off-the-ball tactics. 'There have been some specific inputs that Craig (Fulton) has given me and also Cosma, our Analytical Coach, has provided valuable inputs for my game particularly on off-the-ball tactics. I've been implementing this in my game and look forward to breaking into the India side again," Karthi said. Karthi knows the challenge ahead remains stiff. 'There is still a lot of hard work to do. There is a fine difference in how the senior team performs and how we have fared as a development team. There are some gaps that we need to work on, and that will be our focus in this camp," he concluded. Manchester weather: Will rain impact the start of the 4th ENG vs IND Test?
The Old Trafford in Manchester is all set to host the crucial fourth Test match of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England today. The match is a must-win for the Shubman Gill-led Indian side if they want to stay alive in the series, as they are trailing 1-2 after the third Test. On the other hand, for England, a win will seal the series, while a draw will ensure they are at least not on the losing side when the series ends. While both teams will have their game plan ready to secure the match, they will have to be careful about rain, which is expected to heavily influence the match. It has been raining very heavily in Manchester for the last couple of days, and it is expected to continue similarly on the first day of the match. But what exactly does the weather report of Manchester for Wednesday, July 23, suggest? Let's take a look. Hourly weather report of Manchester on Wednesday, July 23 According to Manchester's weather report for Wednesday by AccuWeather, it will be a cloudy start to the day as, from 9 am to 1 pm, the weather is expected to be clear of rain despite heavy clouds in the sky. The trouble begins from 2 pm, as the precipitation chances increase from 6 per cent at 1 pm to 54 per cent. It is expected to come down in the next hour but not by much, with a 49 per cent chance at 3 pm and 36 per cent at 4 pm. Precipitation chances drop down significantly at 5 pm, standing at just 17 per cent, and remain constant till 7 pm IST. The current reports do not suggest a full washout, but definitely hint towards a start-stop kind of play on Day 1. What are the weather reports for the next four days of the Test? The second day of the Test, on July 24, is also expected to be a rain-hit one, with an 84 per cent chance of precipitation. But things are expected to be clear on Days 3 and 4—July 25 and 26—with just 7 and 10 per cent chances of precipitation, respectively. The final day of the Test on Sunday will once again be a rain-hit one, with a 40 per cent overall chance of precipitation. In conclusion, players will have to go a little hard in their approach if they wish to get a result out of the match; otherwise, it will be the sixth draw between the two sides at this venue in 10 encounters.
