Scientist absolved of corruption charge levelled by director of Institute of Plasma Research
Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) absolved a scientist with the Institute of Plasma Research (IPR), who was accused by his institute and its director of cheating and corruption.
As the CBI did not find any prosecutable evidence against Subrata Pradhan for the charge of quid pro quo, it filed a closure report in the court last year. The complainant director and the institute did not raise any objection to the CBI's summary, and the special court accepted the report.
After Pradhan approached the Gujarat high court over alleged harassment by his superior, he, along with other colleagues, was accused of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and corruption by the institute's director,
Shashank Chaturvedi
, in 2022.
The CBI booked Pradhan under IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

In 2024, the CBI filed a closure report in the court stating that while certain procedural lapses were observed, the allegations levelled in the FIR were not proved, and no prosecutable evidence was found against the accused. Specifically, the investigation found no evidence of "quid pro quo" against the officials. The procurement processes were routed through various committees, including the need aspect committee, tender award committee, and senior purchase committee.
The CBI's finding regarding Pradhan's innocence was accepted by IPR's governing council, and Chaturvedi also formally accepted the conclusion and explicitly said that he had no objection to the acceptance of the closure report.
"In view of the detailed investigation carried out by the CBI, the findings of no prosecutable evidence and absence of 'quid pro quo', and the unequivocal consent for acceptance of the closure report from the IPR and the original complainant," the court said while accepting the closure report against the scientist.

Customs officer nabbed taking Rs 10 lakh bribe in Mumbai
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) The CBI has arrested a customs superintendent posted at Sahar airport in Mumbai, for allegedly taking a Rs 10.20 lakh bribe from an agent, an official said Sunday. The central probe agency booked Krishan Kumar for allegedly demanding a bribe at the rate of Rs 10 per kg for facilitating clearance of imported consignments from a customs house agent, a CBI spokesperson said. It was also alleged that Kumar threatened the agent when he refused to pay the bribe, and deliberately withheld consignments. The CBI conducted a verification of the allegations between July 25 and August 1 in the presence of independent witnesses, and corroborated the demand for a bribe from covertly recorded conversations and other evidence. 'The accused was found to have demanded Rs 6 lakhs (Rs 5,80,000 for his senior officers; Rs 20,000 as his share for himself) against previously cleared consignments; Rs 10,00,000 for facilitating release of a currently held consignment; and Rs 10 per kg for smooth clearance of future consignments," the spokesperson said. The agency laid a trap and caught Kumar red-handed taking Rs 10.20 lakh bribe on Saturday, she said. He was produced before the Special Court in Mumbai, which granted the CBI his remand till August 6. Former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, now a convicted rapist, has officially begun his life sentence at Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. No longer an undertrial, the 33-year-old has been assigned convict number 15528 and shifted to the jail's convict the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 11 lakh on Saturday for raping a 47-year-old domestic worker in Mysuru and filming the act. The compensation will be paid to the survivor, marking the conclusion of a case that moved with uncommon speed just 14 months from FIR to final today, Prajwal's life will mirror that of any other life convict. He will wear a white prison uniform, follow strict jail routines, and perform eight hours of mandatory labour daily. Prison officials confirmed that he will be treated like any other inmate, in accordance with the Karnataka Prison Manual. He now has to select one among several assigned duties and options include work in the jail bakery, gardening, dairy, vegetable farming, carpentry, or handicrafts. For now, he will receive Rs 524 per month for unskilled labor. Depending on performance and skill development, his classification and pay could be upgraded to semi-skilled or skilled categories over case against Revanna, once seen as a rising political figure and the NDA's Lok Sabha candidate from Hassan in 2024, unraveled after explicit videos he had recorded were circulated ahead of the elections. The videos sparked public outrage and prompted a criminal complaint, which was registered at the Cyber Crime Station of the Revanna's claim that the clips were "morphed," the court found the digital forensic and eyewitness evidence compelling. The trial, which began on December 31, 2024, saw 23 witnesses testify. Forensic reports, along with spot inspections, proved pivotal in securing the the investigation and trial, the survivor submitted a saree she had preserved as physical evidence. Forensic tests confirmed the presence of sperm on the saree, which was presented in court and accepted as crucial evidence in proving the CID's Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by Inspector Shobha, collected 123 pieces of evidence during the course of the investigation and submitted a voluminous chargesheet spanning nearly 2,000 was convicted under sections 376(2)(k) and 376(2)(n) along with Sections 354(A), 354(B) and 354(C) of the IPC.- Ends
