Kharmel Cochrane Talks Casting Lily-Rose Depp In ‘Nosferatu' & Teases Emerald Fennell's ‘Wuthering Heights': 'Some English Lit Fans Are Not Going To Be Happy' — Sands Film Festival
The apology was on account of Cochrane dismissing Lily-Rose Depp as a serious contender for a leading role in Robert Eggers's Nosferatu. The vampire remake is one of the many buzzy titles Cochrane has cast in recent years. Her other credits include Saltburn, Rye Lane, and Bob Marley: One Love.

'I had said absolutely no way to Lily-Rose Depp,' Cochrane continued, breaking down the Nosferatu casting process.
'I didn't think she could act. I hadn't seen anything that I thought showed she could act. And I'm not even bothered by the nepotism thing. I think that's a whole other conversation. And then she auditioned. I was wrong. And I've got no shame in saying if I'm not right.'
Cochrane ultimately cast Depp alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe. The film went on to become a surprise box office hit, crossing the $100 million mark and becoming Focus Features' second highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office, surpassing Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain.
During this afternoon's session, Cochrane described Eggers as one of her staple directors with whom she feels most comfortable collaborating.
'It's Emerald Fennell, Alex Garland, Robert [Eggers], and Lena Dunham,' Cochrane said of her favorite directors. 'We've just got a really good thing going. And I genuinely feel safe in my workplace with them. I feel like I can say to them, 'Oh, look what if we do this,' and I'm not worried about getting fired, because that is a real fear, especially when you're on some of the studio stuff. I got fired recently. I don't want to work like that. I can't do my best work if I'm scared to offer an opinion.'
Cochrane also gave the audience at Sands an insight into her unique casting process, which has often been praised as dynamic and diverse. The casting vet said she never lets her work be entirely dictated by a film's script or a director's casting brief. She used the idea of a character's race to illustrate her process.
'If something is clearly written as white, for example, a script reads 'she tied her blonde hair back,' but there's no specific reason for it, I will just put people on tape,' Cochrane said. 'And then it's almost like I dare someone to question why I've done it, and they don't. So then it just becomes normal. Years ago, I would get people saying, 'did you read the brief?' And I'd say yeah, and this is my interpretation of it, just like when you can read a book.'
The casting vet said she is currently catching a lot of heat for her work on Fennell's forthcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation. Aussie-natives Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi have been cast in the film's central roles.
'There was one Instagram comment that said the casting director should be shot,' Cochrane said. 'But just wait till you see it, and then you can decide whether you want to shoot me or not. But you really don't need to be accurate. It's just a book. That is not based on real life. It's all art.'
Further teasing Fennell's Wuthering Heights, Cochrane said, 'there's definitely going to be some English Lit fans that are not going to be happy' in reference to the film's artistic interpretation of the source material.
'Wait until you see the set design because that is even more shocking,' Cochrane said. 'And there may or may not be a dog collar in it.'
Sands Film Festival runs until April 27.

Latitude slot takes singer a step nearer her dream
A singer-songwriter once voted by her sixth form as the most likely to headline the Latitude Festival is one step closer to her dream as she prepares to take the stage at this year's event. Alice-Lily, 22, from Rackheath, near Norwich, is learning to juggle her music career while being a fourth-year medicine student, spending any spare time performing or collaborating with other artists. Tens of thousands of music fans , near Southwold, Suffolk, for the festival, headlined by Sting, Snow Patrol and Fatboy Slim, from 24 to 27 July. Alice-Lily said: "It's our local festival so to be able to say that I'm playing it is such an amazing privilege and honour." She said she was in disbelief when BBC Radio Suffolk's Angelle Joseph surprised her with the news that she had been chosen to play the Faber Alt. & BBC Introducing Stage on Saturday. "In my sixth form year book we had this little section talking about 'who's most likely to'," she said. "The thing I was put forward for was 'most likely to headline Latitude', so I'm saying I'm one step closer. It really means a lot. "I grew up in a very musical household. Both my parents sing and for as long as I can remember I have been immersed in music." However, her earliest musical memory is from the age of two. "I like to say my singing journey started back in nursery. I was the shining star in the nativity story and I sang all the verses of Silent Night... it sort of started back then and it's been a progression." She says her music draws on her Christian faith and influences including Jorja Smith and James Morrison. Her proud mum, Linda Nnene, said her daughter had the support of the whole family. "Be it the successes, the challenges, the joys or anything with regard to music, we are always beside her, behind her and spurring her on," she said. Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are collaborating again, this time on Bugonia, an eerie, dark-comedy remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi film Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan. The film's synopsis from Will Tracy's screenplay is as follows: 'Two conspiracy obsessed young men (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company (Emma Stone), convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.' 'Sense and Sensibility': What We Know So Far About the New Adaptation Starring Daisy Edgar-Jones
Good news has arrived for Jane Austen fans. The author's classic novel, Sense and Sensibility, is returning to the big screen. (The book was previously made into the Oscar-winning 1995 film starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.) Here's everything we know about the remake. Sense and Sensibility follows the three Dashwood sisters and their mother, now a widow, in 18th-century England. The family is forced to leave their lavish Sussex family estate and move in with a distant relative who lives in a quaint cottage. There, the two eldest sisters, Elinor and Marianne, begin contrasting journeys of love and loss. Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to lead the film. She'll play Elinor Dashwood, the eldest sister of the three siblings. In her ELLE US cover story, Edgar-Jones spoke about the importance of playing layered characters. 'It's great that more and more stories are being made with women front and centre,' she said. 'It's also an interesting thing, being a woman in your 20s, wanting to find characters who are not always ingenues. You want to find characters with agency. I want every character I play to be complicated and deep and have layers to them, because that's what it is to be human. I feel lucky that a lot of the characters I've played have had that. They aren't defined by their actions or their experiences, or by the men in their life.' Edgar-Jones celebrated the Sense and Sensibility news on Instagram in a photo posted today that shows her holding the book. She wrote a simple caption, '👀.' On July 11, Deadline reported that Esmé Creed-Miles (Hanna) has been cast as Marianne Dashwood, Elinor's emotional and impulsive sister. Miles shared an Instagram post celebrating the big news with shots of the book and her script side-by-side with Edgar Jones's. On July 21, Variety reported that Caitríona Balfe (Outlander), George MacKay (1917), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), Frank Dillane (Fear the Walking Dead), Herbert Nordrum (The Worst Person in the World), and Bodhi Rae Breathnach (So Awkward Academy) have joined the cast. Balfe will play Mrs. Dashwood, Elinor and Marianne's mother; MacKay will play Edward Ferrars, Elinor's love interest; Shaw will play Mrs. Jennings, the woman whom the sisters stay with in London; Dillane will play John Willoughby, Marianne's first love interest; Nordrum will play Colonel Brandon; Marianne's other love interest; and Rae Breathnach will play Margaret, Elinor and Marianne's younger sister. The Sense and Sensibility remake will be brought to you by Focus Features and Working Title Films. Georgia Oakley (Blue Jean) will direct, and the bestselling author Diana Reid (Love & Virtue) will write the screenplay. Yes! According to Reid, the film was set to start shooting in July 2025, and it has. Filming has officially commenced in the United Kingdom.
