Donny van de Beek points the finger over Man Utd struggles after exit

Daily Mirror21-05-2025
Donny van de Beek was never given a fair shot at Manchester United and has attributed his injury woes to the amount of time he spent on the bench at Old Trafford
Donny van de Beek has claimed his injury struggles date back to his time warming the bench at Manchester United. The Dutchman was signed in 2020 but was unable to ever make himself a regular.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent £35million to land the versatile attacker, but only made us of him sporadically as Van de Beek's frustration mounted. He scored on his debut but was rarely preferred to Bruno Fernandes with his minutes very much at a premium.

He's since left, joining Girona in Spain, but has continued to battle an Achilles issue. The Dutchman has enjoyed far more minutes than he did at Old Trafford but clearly still has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to his underwhelming stint in Manchester.

Solskjaer continued to defend his lack of use of the player, but in the years since Van de Beek's health has been a battle. He confessed that the time he spent as a sub means his body was less accustomed to the intensity of playing regularly.
He told SportBible: "It's difficult to build rhythm and confidence when you're constantly being sidelined. It's hard to be at your best when you're in and out of the team, and I think when you're not playing regularly. Your body isn't used to the intensity and you become more prone to injuries. The lack of consistent minutes didn't help either."
Van de Beek's goal on his debut did little to aid his cause and even when he would impress he was quickly returned to his bench role. He also admits the random cameos did nothing for his case with bit part minutes not helping him become a regular.
He said: "I think I deserved more chances, especially in my first year. I didn't play all the time, but when I did, I had some good games. I was convinced I would get more opportunities. I felt good, and thought, 'Okay, my time will come' but for some reason, it didn't happen. After a year or two, it gets harder because if you don't get a longer run of games then it's difficult to prove yourself."
Van de Beek would score the last goal of the Solskjaer era as he came off the bench to score what would be a consolation during a 4-1 loss at Watford. The Norwegian was forced to defend his use of the player on several occasions and claimed leaving him on the bench spoke to the quality of the squad.

"I think it says a lot about our depth of quality in the squad that we don't have to use him every single game," he said.
Despite that claim Van de Beek would make just four starts in his only full season under Solskjaer and things didn't change when Erik ten Hag, who coached him at Ajax, came on board before he eventually left Manchester.

Matthijs de Ligt issues promise to Man Utd fans as verdict shared on summer transfers

Manchester United endured their worst-ever Premier League campain last season but the Dutchman is determined to improve things under Ruben Amorim heading into his second term at Old Trafford Matthijs De Ligt says Manchester United's players owe it to their fans to improve on last season's worst-ever Premier League finish. United ended last season in 15th place, their lowest finish for 15 years, and also missed out on Europe for only the second time in 35 years after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. ‌ After such a dismal season, United defender De Ligt said Ruben Amorim 's players must make it up to their loyal fans, who stood by the team throughout last term, despite such poor results. ‌ 'Of course we owe it to them,' said De Ligt. 'But I think, first of all, we owe it to ourselves. We were all unhappy with our performances last season, so that's the first thing we have to do. ‌ 'We owe it also to ourselves to play much better. And then, obviously, the fans are the most important thing, so hopefully we can give them a lot more joy this season.' United kicked off their US tour with a 2-1 win over West Ham at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium and De Ligt said winning in pre-season will help build confidence ahead of the new campaign. 'I think after a season like that, it's normal to have to rebuild your confidence,' said De Ligt. 'So that's why I think a win like this is really important. 'I think with winning, you become more confident. You start to believe more in what you're doing. This was a good example of what we can show and hopefully, with this, the group becomes even better." De Ligt said competing in the Premier League Summer series, with games against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton, is the ideal way to prepare for the new season. 'I think it was good that we played against a Premier League team," said De Ligt. "They obviously also play at a high pace. So it was good that we showed some things that we want to improve on. ‌ 'We've trained a lot, we've trained hard and I think you also saw what kind of intensity we can bring. We're still at the beginning and we have a lot more potential to show in that respect. ‌ 'We've been with the manager for eight months, more or less. Last season was not good enough, we know that, and now we have to find a way to improve. 'We've made some good signings. You saw what Matheus [Cunha] can bring to the team and I liked the mentality we showed - high pressing, a lot of intensity, some chances also. I think we also defended quite well so, overall, I think it was a good performance. 'We're working really hard every day to be at our best for the first game of the new season against Arsenal. Last season is last season. There's a lot of positivity now in the camp and also some new players." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Matthijs De Ligt makes honest admission to Man United fans after lowest-ever Premier League finish last season

Matthijs De Ligt admits Manchester United owe their fans after a dismal season that ended with the club's worst-ever Premier League finish and failure to qualify for Europe for only the second time in 35 years. United opened their pre-season tour of the US with a 2-1 win over West Ham at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and De Ligt hopes it can be the start of an upturn under Ruben Amorim after they made supporters suffer so much. 'Of course we owe it to them,' said the Holland defender. 'But I think, first of all, we owe it to ourselves. We are all unhappy with our performances last season. 'So that's the first thing we have to do. We owe it also to ourselves to play much better. And then, obviously, the fans are the most important thing also. So hopefully we can give them a lot more joy this season. 'I think after a season like that, it's normal to have to build your confidence. So that's why I think a win like today is really important. I think with winning, you become more confident. You start to believe more in what you're doing. 'Last season wasn't good enough, we know that, and now we have to find a way to improve. I think we've made some good signings already. You saw today already, Matheus (Cunha), that he can bring a lot to the team.' Asked if it will be difficult for United to put last season behind them, De Ligt replied: 'No, I don't think it will be difficult because last season is last season. It's a new season. There's a lot of positivity now in the camp.' The former Ajax and Bayern Munich centre-back also believes United can benefit from not being in Europe by having fewer fixtures and more time to train under Amorim at Carrington. 'I think if you use the time well, it can definitely be an advantage. We have a lot of time to train now, so that aspect is really, really important,' he said. 'Obviously, as a football player, you want to play as much as possible, so it's a shame we are not in Europe. 'But I think if you saw the last season, some teams in the Champions League had a difficult season in the Premier League. So I think if we use the time well, if we train every day at maximum, we can make it our advantage.' Two goals from Bruno Fernandes gave United victory over the Hammers, and De Ligt was impressed with how they performed in their Premier League Summer Series opener ahead of the games against Bournemouth and Everton. 'I think it was a good performance from us, especially in the first half. You always want to win the first game, so we are working every day really hard to be at our best for the first (Premier League) game against Arsenal, then we'll see game after game. 'It was also good that we played against a Premier League team. They also play at a high pace and it was good that we showed already some things today that we want to improve and what we do improve. 'You saw what kind of intensity we can bring. I think we're still at the beginning. We have a lot more potential to show in that aspect. 'But I think for today it was good intensity and good performance. These games are really important for us to win, so we can build on this.'

Ruben Amorim explains why Man Utd fans must wait for Bryan Mbeumo debut

Ruben Amorim is easing Bryan Mbeumo into life at Manchester United very slowly fans will have to wait to see the summer signing in action. The £65m new arrival from Brentford has joined up with his new teammates and trained with the Red Devils, but Amorim is waiting to unleash him against opposition. Manchester United's pre-season preparation continued with a 2-1 win over West Ham in New Jersey, thanks to two goals from Bruno Fernandes, but Mbeumo was not involved in the squad. The Cameroon international is not injured, but he is working on reaching match fitness, with Amorim not ready to put him in a game context just yet. The Red Devils are back in action in the early hours of Thursday morning UK time against Bournemouth and Mbeumo will not be playing then either. 'We hope to have Bryan in the last game [of the tour of America]. He's training now, so we'll see.' That final game of the Premier League Summer Series comes on Saturday against Everton in Atlanta, Georgia, kicking off at 10pm UK time. The former Bees star still has time to get up to speed before the Premier League season begins against Arsenal at Old Trafford on August 17. After the clash with the Toffees in Atlanta, United return home to face Fiorentina at Old Trafford on Saturday August 9, their final pre-season action. Fellow new signings Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon were involved against the Hammers, with the Brazilian starting the match and the Paraguayan coming off the bench. Amorim hailed a few of his star names after the win over West Ham, pointing out that Cunha will bring something to his side that was missing over the last campaign. 'All the guys. I don't want to talk specifically,' Amorim said on who impressed him in the friendly, before talking specifically. More Trending 'Rasmus [Hojlund] did well. I really liked Rasmus's game, the runs and the way he fought during the game, one against one, when we kicked the ball. He connected with the team-mates so he did a great job. 'Matheus Cunha is that kind of player that can help us, he can help us a lot because he can run with the ball and that is something that can change the game. We missed that last year. 'In the first half, Kobbie [Mainoo] and Manu [Ugarte] were really good. I'm not going to talk about the second team because it's really hard for 11 [10] players to go to the pitch, you know, a lot of young kids. 'But I really like the team. Of course, you have to look at the game and you have to improve things.'
