Over 10,000 people with disabilities newly identified in Coimbatore
The initiative, which began in June this year, is being implemented by the District Differently Abled Welfare Office in coordination with the project team.
A total of 193 community rehabilitation workers and facilitators have been deployed to collect data from households across the district. The survey, based on a 77-point questionnaire, gathers information on the type and degree of disability, educational and employment background, and access to government support.
According to P. Sundareswaran, Project Officer for the T.N. RIGHTS Project in Coimbatore, 10,268 individuals have been newly identified so far. While official records list around 24,568 persons with disabilities in the district, the actual number is expected to be higher.
'Our challenge is identifying individuals who have not disclosed their disabilities due to stigma or lack of awareness,' Mr. Sundareswaran said. 'Some have acquired disabilities due to accidents but have not come forward to seek support. We are addressing this through focused awareness efforts.'
The data will be used to update the Social Registry Enrolment, link eligible individuals to government schemes, and support future policy planning. According to officials, around 33% of the survey has been completed so far. Once the exercise concludes—expected by the end of September 2025—medical camps will be organised to assess individuals and issue disability certificates.

How to eliminate shoulder pain and increase your mobility and flexibility with the lat smash exercise
There are certain exercises that you see people do in the gym every day. Then there are the exercises which are rarely seen, but are still quite popular. Finally, there are those which you will never see anyone do, like the subject of this article: the lat (latissimus dorsi) smash. The primary reason for this seems to be that the lat smash is not considered a 'body-building" muscles, nor is it an explosive exercise which would crank up the heart rate for cardio. It is a maintenance exercise for one of the most active muscle groups in the body. They ensure that you are more flexible, agile, and do not suffer from shoulder pain. I had never seen or heard of the lat smash until it popped up on my social media feed as a recommended exercise for treating shoulder pain. And just the way it's done is extremely interesting. While it can be done using a foam roller as well, doing this with a barbell on the smith machine is what makes it more effective. It's also a unilateral exercise: meaning that it has to be done on one side first, and then the other. Get the bar higher up on the smith machine, just a little under armpit height, because that's where the bar has to be wedged as you stand perpendicular to the bar. 'When you're at this point you want to add a little pressure down so (the bar) goes straight up into your armpit and then lean back slightly," says a YouTube video by MVMT Performance & Rehabilitation titled, Barbell Lat Smash | Improve Lat Mobility & Relieve Tension. To help increase the pressure, you can pick up some weights and move the weight-bearing arm back and forth so you find the tenderness insertion of the lat, which is where the tightness is settled. 'This self-myofascial release technique targets the latissimus dorsi, helping to reduce tightness, improve range of motion, and enhance shoulder and back flexibility. Ideal for athletes, lifters, and anyone experiencing tight or overworked lats," the video description adds. But the most vocal advocate of the lat smash over the past year or so has been mobility trainer Scott James Bailey, who runs TWS Training, which has more than 400,000 followers on Instagram. He posted the exercise once as part of a two-exercise series on his most effective shoulder pain exercises. The overwhelming popularity of the video led to him to create one specifically for the lat smash. 'While it looks crazy and is absolutely ruthless, it is one of the best shoulder pain relieving exercises you can do," says Bailey, who studied Kinesiology and was dealing with a severe shoulder impingement when he found out about the lat smash. A shoulder pinch can be caused by tightness in the lats, the teres major and minor, and the infraspinatus muscle which is on the back side of the shoulder blade and a key element of rotator cuffs. A tightness means a reduced range of motion which in turn affects the force output of the muscle. In short, tight muscles lead to reduced strength while exercising. Bailey talks about the things to watch out for while performing the lat smash. 'The armpit is full of sensitive nerves, so lean back as much as possible and grind on the muscle, not the nerves. It should feel intense, but never sharp or numbing. The kettlebell is optional, but I like using around 12kg for extra pressure. Please note: Heavier doesn't mean better here," he writes in the caption of the video which has been shared more than 40,000 times just on Instagram. He suggests doing this for either 'Two minutes straight or two-three sets of 10-15 controlled swings." A post shared by Scott James Bailey (@twstraining) The exercise might not work for all kinds of shoulder trouble, but a lot of it starts with a simple restriction of movement due to the crowded shoulder joint which can get worse over time. Adding this is a rehabilitative move even when you're feeling fit is key to reaping long-term benefits. A great test would be to try overhead and pulling moves to see how the body feels when these muscles are activated, especially the lats. If the barbell feels too harsh, then try experimenting with a foam roller. This one's easier, and can train the body to know what kind of impulse it's looking for when attempting the barbell version of the exercise. Move the arm from down to up as shown in the video below to go deeper into the release while the muscle is also moving. If just a little rocking of the lats over a bar or a foam roller can increase the flexibility of a muscle group that is so active in every lift, then doing these is fully worth it. From charity to capitalism with conscience, ESG gains ground in Indian healthcare and pharma
New Delhi: As India's healthcare sector races toward a projected USD 596 billion valuation by 2025, a quiet but powerful shift is underway—Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles are emerging as the next big disruptor. No longer just a corporate buzzword, ESG is now being seen as a critical framework to tackle inequities, attract impact-driven capital , and build a resilient, inclusive healthcare ecosystem. Experts say ESG could be the game-changer India needs to move beyond piecemeal CSR initiatives and government subsidies—offering instead a data-backed, accountability-driven approach to bridging access gaps, especially in rural and underserved regions. Despite its massive scale, healthcare accounts for just six per cent of the total market capitalisation of the top 1,000 NSE-listed firms—highlighting an urgent need for long-term, value-based transformation. With over 7.5 million workers across hospitals, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, medtech, and biotech, embedding ESG may not just boost investor trust—it could define India's path to becoming a global healthcare leader by 2047. India currently ranks 120 out of 156 countries on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, reflecting an urgent need to adopt frameworks that move from short-term charity to measurable, long-term impact. In a conversation with ETHealthworld, Amit Bhatia, Founder of Aspire Impact and Aspire Circle, emphasised the growing relevance of ESG in reshaping healthcare outcomes across the country. 'ESG enables us to move from charity to capitalism with conscience . It incentivises healthcare providers to address underserved populations through market-based mechanisms, improving both health outcomes and investment returns,' he said. India's healthcare landscape is marked by deep-rooted inequities, especially in rural and tier 2/3 cities, where critical gaps in infrastructure, affordability, and access remain. According to Bhatia, traditional philanthropy often lacks scale, sustainability, and accountability. ESG frameworks, by contrast, offer structured and quantifiable models backed by 150+ healthcare-specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). These KPIs track metrics viz patient safety and care quality, medical waste management, gender equity and workforce inclusion, affordability and last-mile access, digital health adoption and ethical governance and transparency 'Only 25 per cent of Indian companies disclose ESG metrics today. But those that do often enjoy 5 to 20 per cent higher valuation multiples, increased investor trust, and improved brand equity,' Bhatia noted. Unlike one-off donations or government subsidies that risk creating dependency, ESG-driven investments aim to align profitability with purpose. Aspire Impact uses a Dual ESG Ratings & Rankings system that evaluates companies on both risk mitigation and impact potential, helping guide capital towards organisations making a measurable difference—particularly in low-access geographies. Through its evaluation of over 1,000 companies, Aspire has helped develop sector-specific ESG roadmaps tailored to various industries. The healthcare ESG framework, launched in 2022, is designed to support providers operating in underserved regions, where demand for quality, inclusive care is rapidly growing. Bhatia also highlighted how embedding ESG principles into public health initiatives—such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Health Mission (ABDM)—can significantly enhance transparency, accountability, and scalability. He further called for greater alignment between ESG disclosures and India's regulatory mandates, including the Companies Act and SEBI's ESG reporting requirements. This alignment, he noted, could catalyse widespread adoption of ESG frameworks across both public and private healthcare players. 'The future of healthcare is not just digital or data-driven, it must be value-driven. ESG allows us to quantify our intentions, measure our progress, and attract capital that's both responsible and results-oriented,' Bhatia said. With sustainability and accountability becoming top priorities for investors, ESG adoption in healthcare is no longer optional—it's a strategic imperative. For India to bridge persistent gaps in equity, affordability, and access, ESG provides a clear and actionable pathway to achieving universal healthcare goals while reinforcing national resilience. As India looks ahead to its centenary in 2047, embedding ESG principles into healthcare strategy could become a defining lever—reshaping not just institutions, but also the future of public health and social impact in the country.
