New York Man, Charged For 9-Year-Old Daughter's Murder, Reported Her Missing

NDTV2 days ago
A man whose 9-year-old daughter was found dead in a wooded pond after he reported that she had been abducted while they were they were vacationing in upstate New York was charged Monday with murder.
Luciano Frattolin, 45, of Montreal is charged with murdering and concealing the corpse of his daughter, Melina Frattolin, according to New York State Police.
A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf at his arraignment Monday, according to court officials. The public defender's office assigned to defend Frattolin did not immediately respond to phone and email requests for comment from The Associated Press.
Luciano Frattolin called 911 Saturday night and later told authorities his daughter had been abducted from a parking lot near Lake George, a resort town in the Adirondack region, authorities said. That led officials to issue an Amber Alert overnight to enlist the public's help in finding her.
But authorities said there were inconsistencies in the father's account, and that they concluded there was no evidence she had been taken.
Frattolin initially said he could not find his child after he stepped out of a wooded area at a parking lot near Lake George.
'During a subsequent interview, he then reports two unknown males forced her into a white van,' New York State Police Capt. Robert McConnell said. 'That lead was thoroughly investigated and disproven.'
Surveillance video shows the father and daughter in another nearby resort town, Saratoga Springs, at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The girl spoke on the phone with her mother about an hour later and did not indicate she was under duress, police said.
Police believe Frattolin killed the girl after the phone call and before he made the 911 call.
Forest rangers found the girl's body on Sunday afternoon in the shallows of a pond about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Lake George, in Ticonderoga, authorities said. The criminal complaint said Frattolin concealed her body under a log.
An autopsy has been scheduled.
Police said the father and daughter had been vacationing since July 11 in the US and were expected back in Montreal that weekend. The girl lived in Montreal with her mother, who has been estranged from Luciano Frattolin since 2019, police said.
Frattolin did not respond to requests for comment sent via LinkedIn, Instagram and his company website over the weekend. He described himself as a 'loving father' on his Instagram profile, and on the website of a coffee company said to be founded by him, a post says that his daughter Melina is 'the light of his life.'
Police said Frattolin had no prior criminal or domestic violence history.

Patna Police arrest three for raping minor girl in Danapur

Patna: Patna Police have arrested three persons for allegedly raping a minor girl and blackmailing her with a video clip, an official said on Thursday. City SP (West) Bhanu Pratap Singh said that the police came to know about the incident on July 22 after the victim's parents lodged a complaint at the Danapur police station. 'The investigation revealed that four youths allegedly gang raped the victim, recorded a video of the incident, and used it to blackmail her. They extorted jewellery kept in the house,' Singh said, adding that the case was solved within 24 hours of the complaint. Danapur Police registered FIR number 767/25 on July 22, 2025, under Sections 70(2), 308(2), 351(2) of the BNS, along with relevant sections of the POCSO Act (4/6/12). Following directions from the Senior Superintendent of Police, an SIT was formed under the leadership of City SP (West) to investigate the case. According to Singh, the accused befriended the victim on Instagram, took her to a hotel, gang raped her, recorded the act, and later used the obscene video to extort gold jewellery, which they sold at a shop. Based on the statements of the three arrested youths, the police also arrested goldsmith Arvind Kumar for allegedly purchasing the stolen jewellery. During questioning, Kumar admitted that he had bought the jewellery from the accused. 'We have seized five mobile phones during the operation, and raids are underway to apprehend another individual involved in the incident,' Singh said. The investigation team included Sub-Inspector Ashish Kumar Chaudhary, Sub-Inspector Bittu Kumar Sharma, Sub-Inspector Preeti Kumari, Assistant Sub-Inspector Chandan Pratap Karna, and members of the Police Station armed force. The incident once again exposes the sad and grim reality of the society pertaining to safety and security of women. Crimes against women have been one of the most glaring challenges across the nation and the entire country has been struggling to deal effectively with it.

Two from Hyderabad lose lakhs in online trading scam

Two men from Hyderabad fell victim to an online trading scam that began on Instagram and cost them a total of over ₹10 lakhs. A 41-year-old resident of Shaikpet and a 42-year-old from Somajiguda were duped after being lured by fake investment schemes, said an officer from the Hyderabad cyber crimes wing. The victims were added to WhatsApp groups where multiple users, likely fake profiles, posted scripted success stories to create an illusion of legitimacy. A woman identifying herself as Sahana Iyengar, who claimed to be a receptionist or assistant to a professor, guided them through the process. She persuaded them to download a trading app and invest money under the pretext of purchasing shares. One victim invested ₹2 lakh, while the other put in ₹8.39 lakh over time. The app displayed fabricated profits, with one account even showing an inflated balance of ₹90 lakhs. However, when the victims attempted to withdraw their money, they were either told to pay a 10% service fee or were blocked altogether. By the time they realised it was a scam, they had lost all contact with the fraudsters and their money was gone. Victims of cyber fraud should immediately dial 1930 or lodge a complaint at For emergencies, contact 8712665171.
