
Singapore's NTU assembles panel after students penalised over AI use, one of them merely for alphabetising citations with online tool
SINGAPORE, June 26 — Nanyang Technological University (NTU) will convene an appeal review panel including artificial intelligence (AI) experts after a student was accused of academic fraud for allegedly using generative AI tools.
CNA reported that NTU allows students to use AI in assignments but requires them to declare usage, ensure accuracy, and cite sources.
'NTU remains committed to our goal of equipping students with the knowledge and skills to use AI technologies productively, ethically and critically,' a spokesman was quoted saying.
The university said it had met two of the three students involved to assess the grounds for appeal, though no decisions were made during the consultations.
One student's appeal was accepted for review, while another's was rejected.
The student whose appeal was processed had earlier shared on Reddit that she was accused of misusing AI after submitting an essay for a module on health and disease politics.
An assistant professor questioned whether AI tools were used, prompting the student to submit a time-lapse video of her writing process using the Draftback browser extension.
However, she was penalised for using Study Crumb, an AI-powered site, to alphabetise her citations, receiving a zero for the assignment and a 'D' for the module.
The student paid S$40 (RM139) to appeal and later demonstrated her writing process and use of the citation tool during a two-hour consultation with a faculty panel.
A panel member reportedly agreed the tool was not considered generative AI and assured her that the misconduct would not appear on her permanent record.
Two other students from the same class also received zeros, including one who used Citation Machine and ChatGPT to organise citations and conduct limited background research.
She said her appeal was rejected after a panel found she violated explicit instructions banning AI tools.
NTU said the student had previously admitted to using generative AI in her assignment and noted that instructors may prohibit AI use for certain tasks.
A briefing slide for the class stated that AI use in developing essays was prohibited, with zero marks imposed for violations.
The third student was penalised for allegedly using fake citations and initially faced a 10-mark deduction, which was later escalated to a zero.
He accepted the decision and chose not to contest it further, saying he prioritised passing as he had already secured a job but feared the incident could harm his reputation.

Telegram ignored over half of Malaysia's takedown requests, says communications minister
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Malaysian authorities are escalating pressure on Telegram after accusing the messaging platform of routinely ignoring requests to take down harmful content — a move that has led to a rare civil suit and threats of stricter regulation. In a Free Malaysia Today report, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Telegram has shown the lowest compliance rate among all major social media platforms in Malaysia, acting on fewer than half of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) takedown requests. 'I have ordered MCMC to call Telegram for a meeting next week to discuss the issue,' Fahmi told reporters today after an event in Pantai Dalam. The remarks come days after MCMC filed a civil lawsuit against Telegram and two of its prominent channels — Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas — for allegedly disseminating content that could erode trust in public institutions and threaten social order. The regulator said the two channels had published material in breach of Malaysia's Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and that this was the first time legal action had been taken against a social media platform with a local licence. Telegram is registered as an application service provider (class) in Malaysia. 'The move follows Telegram's serious failure to address content that has been repeatedly reported to it, despite multiple negotiation and cooperation efforts by MCMC,' the commission said in a statement. Fahmi added that MCMC had flagged over 1.18 million pieces of harmful content across platforms as of June 24 this year. Only 173,642 of those were removed. 'Of this number, 51 per cent of the content removed were online gambling ads, while 24 per cent were online scams,' he said. 'We will take strict action to ensure Malaysians do not become victims of cybercrime.' While MCMC has no power to directly remove content itself, it can issue requests and expects platform providers to comply. Fahmi stressed that the platforms ultimately bear the responsibility for restricting access to such material in Malaysia.

Two more Besut MRSM students remanded over alleged dorm bullying
KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 — Two more students from the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut, Kuala Terengganu have been remanded for three days to assist investigations into an alleged bullying incident at the school. According to Utusan Malaysia, the remand order, which runs until Monday, was issued by Assistant Senior Registrar Yuhanis Mohd Roslan at the Magistrates' Court in Kuala Terengganu to allow police to investigate the case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting. Besut police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said the two 15-year-old students were detained at about 4pm yesterday when they turned up with their families at the Besut District Police Headquarters. So far, two Form Two students have come forward claiming they were assaulted by a group of older students in an incident at the school dormitory around 11.30pm on June 24. According to police, the first victim was allegedly forced into a semi-squatting position with slippers placed on his head for about 40 minutes. He was also punched in the stomach and slapped, resulting in pain to his abdomen and right ribs, along with bruising on his back. The second victim reportedly sustained injuries to both legs. Yesterday, five other students aged 15 to 17 were also remanded until tomorrow in connection with the case.
