Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey Trailer Is Already Sparking Debate For This 1 Reason

Yahoo7 hours ago
The trailer for Christopher Nolan's latest movie isn't even officially online yet, but it's still got plenty of people talking for one specific reason.
After the global success of Oppenheimer – which swept the 2024 Oscars with seven wins, including Best Film – the British director is venturing to ancient Greece for his next project, which will be an epic adaptation of The Odyssey.
The classic story follows Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the king of Ithica, and his perilous 10-year journey to return home from the Trojan War, during which he encounters the wrath of gods and many mythical creatures.
Nolan's movie boasts a seriously star-studded cast, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie and countless others.
While the trailer hasn't been released online just yet, it has started showing exclusively in cinemas, but only ahead of screenings of Jurassic World Rebirth.

According to the Independent, Nolan's Odyssey trailer opens with a shot of the ocean, along with a voiceover which says: 'Darkness. Zeus's law smashed to pieces. I'm without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.'
It then cuts to a scene with Spider-Man actor Tom as Odysseus' son Telemachus, conversing with an unknown character, portrayed by Jon Bernthal.
Despite its intentional cinema-exclusive release, that hasn't stopped people from recording the trailer and sharing it online illegally, after it was reportedly shown for the first time on Tuesday.
It has since swiftly made the rounds online, causing quite the stir among cinephiles. But the reason it's got people talking isn't for its impressive cinematography or A-list cast, but rather the American accents that the characters exhibit.
While it's not exactly unusual to hear American accents in Hollywood adaptations, people have particularly strong feelings in this instance due to the story's ancient Greek origins (not to mention the fact that Tom Holland is, of course, British).
It previously seemed the director was committed to staying true to the source material, after plans were revealed to shoot at the real locations 'across the world', including one Sicilian island where Homer is believed to have envisioned the story taking place – which would explain why fans can't quite look past those accents just yet…

The Odyssey will be the Dunkirk director's first movie since the success of Oppenheimer, which famously went head-to-head with Barbie in the summer of 2023 – in a battle which quickly became known as Barbenheimer.
While Greta Gerwig's Barbie may have won the box office battle, Oppenheimer dominated awards season the following year.
The Odyssey is currently slated for release on 17 July 2026, so it'll be a while before fans can make up their minds on the movie – and those American-ised accents.

David Beckham's Silent Hospital Stay Has Fans Asking Questions

David Beckham's Silent Hospital Stay Has Fans Asking Questions originally appeared on Men's Fitness. David Beckham was recently hospitalized. His wife, Victoria Beckham, shared a photo to her Instagram story of David on June 27. She wrote "Get well soon daddy" over the photo, accompanied by a heart emoji. In the photo, David is wearing a hospital gown and hooked up to wires, flashing a soft smile at the camera. His right arm is in a blue sling. The following story on Victoria's Instagram was a photo of David holding a beaded friendship bracelet that spelled out "get well soon." The picture looked like it was taken outside the hospital, possibly alluding that he was has not publicly addressed his hospitalization, nor has Victoria provided additional details of what landed him there. But, some speculate that it may have to do with an old injury from his soccer-playing days. Beckham recently underwent surgery to fix a wrist fracture he originally suffered 22 years ago during a 2003 international friendly against South Africa. The cast Beckham wore right after the injury even ended up being included on his wax figure at Madame Tussauds in Hong Kong back in 2003, Sports Illustratedshared. But new X-ray revealed that a screw from the initial operation had remained lodged in his forearm and hadn't dissolved as intended, as the New York Postreported. David has been open about the injuries he dealt with throughout his playing career, admitting he regrets taking multiple painkilling injections—including three in his ankle—just to make it through his final game for Real Madrid in Beckham's Silent Hospital Stay Has Fans Asking Questions first appeared on Men's Fitness on Jun 27, 2025 This story was originally reported by Men's Fitness on Jun 27, 2025, where it first appeared.

The Stop Killing Games movement hits a major milestone for game preservation

The consumer initiative Stop Killing Games has gotten one step closer towards its goal of preventing game publishers from effectively deleting online games after discontinuing their service. The European Citizens' Initiative just passed the required 1 million signatures needed to appear before the European Commission, where it could then lead to legislation being put in place. For those unaware, the Stop Killing Games movement was started by content creator Ross Scott after Ubisoft's The Crew was taken offline in 2024. Without any official servers, this always-online game that people purchased was rendered useless. This prompted Scott to begin a campaign that seeks to require publishers to transition their games into a playable state after ending support. Ways this could be done include adding an offline mode and giving players the ability to host private servers. The main goal of this initiative is to remove the ability for publishers to remotely disable games, thus making preservation impossible. The initiative also calls out the misleading nature of purchasing a good when, in reality, it is just a license with a hidden expiration date. Recommended Videos The petition, which just crossed the minimum 1 million signature threshold, will now be presented to the European Commission with the hopes of bringing enough attention to the matter to put new laws into place that will require publishers to offer some way to continue playing their games after ending official support. This comes just days before the July 31 deadline, but that still doesn't guarantee it will be effective. For one, the petition will be vetted to ensure there are no invalid signatures so more signatures are still being collected to hopefully account for that. Second, appearing before the European Commission doesn't necessarily mean any legislative action will be taken. Sadly, this movement is only possible in the EU right now, so those of us in America are unable to sign to show our support. However, this initiative's passing would still likely benefit us as well. The rationale here is that if publishers are required to offer an offline mode or private servers in the EU, there's no reason not to apply it worldwide. Considering how many games — even single-player ones — require an online connection today, this issue will only grow as time goes on. If you're curious about this initiative, there's an extensive FAQ page that gives detailed answers to all the major questions you might have.

Amal Clooney Reveals Why She Takes Away Her Guests' Phones When Entertaining at Home

During an interview with Glamour, Amal Clooney revealed how she maintains privacy in her household The activist is a mom of two children: 8-year-old twins Ella and Alexander Amal and George Clooney welcomed their twins in June 2017Amal Clooney will do anything to maintain her family's privacy. The activist, 47, recently spoke with Glamour about her partnership with husband George Clooney, her private family life and boundary setting in a conversation with Charlotte Tilbury. Amal, who shares 8-year-old twins Ella and Alexander with the Oscar-winning actor, 64, revealed that when guests visit her home, she takes away their phones to create a safe space for private moments. "Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult. But that's also why we entertain a lot at home," she told the outlet. "I now have a phone basket that I use to take everyone's phones away!" "It's important to get that balance where you have time alone with your family and with your friends where people feel like you can have a safe and frank exchange," she added. "And I would say becoming a parent means you're more troubled by some of the intrusions. So we do the best we can to minimize any impact on our children. We don't put our children out there, we've never put their photo out there or anything like that." The Clooneys are very discerning about choosing work projects to ensure their kids take priority. "In marriage, and now with the kids, you give away the selfishness of only looking out for yourself," George told PEOPLE. "It's a wonderful thing. Amal and I talk about it every day. We feel so lucky." George may be an A-list celebrity, but he isn't immune to the woes of parenting. For now, the actor says he gets a little help from the jolly guy in the big red suit when his twins are misbehaving. "They're still all into the Santa thing, which is very helpful because when my kids are acting poorly, let's say in July, I [get] a call from Santa,' he shared with PEOPLE in December 2023, adding that he cast a 'friend' as the fictional character. The Ticket to Paradise actor recently gave a sweet update about parenting the twins at the 2025 Tony Awards. 'They want to see Taylor Swift," the actor told E! News. "The funniest part is that they have no idea of references. Robert DeNiro will be at the house and they're like 'Who's that?' They don't care." He then revealed that, despite their lack of knowledge of film legends, both Ella and Alexander are big fans of Wicked. 'They're looking forward to the second part," he told the outlet.
