The Stop Killing Games movement hits a major milestone for game preservation

Digital Trends19 hours ago
The consumer initiative Stop Killing Games has gotten one step closer towards its goal of preventing game publishers from effectively deleting online games after discontinuing their service. The European Citizens' Initiative just passed the required 1 million signatures needed to appear before the European Commission, where it could then lead to legislation being put in place.
For those unaware, the Stop Killing Games movement was started by content creator Ross Scott after Ubisoft's The Crew was taken offline in 2024. Without any official servers, this always-online game that people purchased was rendered useless. This prompted Scott to begin a campaign that seeks to require publishers to transition their games into a playable state after ending support. Ways this could be done include adding an offline mode and giving players the ability to host private servers. The main goal of this initiative is to remove the ability for publishers to remotely disable games, thus making preservation impossible. The initiative also calls out the misleading nature of purchasing a good when, in reality, it is just a license with a hidden expiration date.

The petition, which just crossed the minimum 1 million signature threshold, will now be presented to the European Commission with the hopes of bringing enough attention to the matter to put new laws into place that will require publishers to offer some way to continue playing their games after ending official support. This comes just days before the July 31 deadline, but that still doesn't guarantee it will be effective. For one, the petition will be vetted to ensure there are no invalid signatures so more signatures are still being collected to hopefully account for that. Second, appearing before the European Commission doesn't necessarily mean any legislative action will be taken.
Sadly, this movement is only possible in the EU right now, so those of us in America are unable to sign to show our support. However, this initiative's passing would still likely benefit us as well. The rationale here is that if publishers are required to offer an offline mode or private servers in the EU, there's no reason not to apply it worldwide. Considering how many games — even single-player ones — require an online connection today, this issue will only grow as time goes on.

EU says it will continue rolling out AI legislation on schedule

The European Union on Friday said it will stick to its timeline for implementing its landmark AI legislation, in response to a concerted effort by over a hundred tech companies to delay the bloc's AI rules, Reuters reported. Tech companies from across the world, including giants like Alphabet, Meta, Mistral AI and ASML have been urging the European Commission to delay rolling out the AI Act, saying it will hurt Europe's chances to compete in the fast-evolving AI arena. 'I've seen, indeed, a lot of reporting, a lot of letters and a lot of things being said on the AI Act. Let me be as clear as possible, there is no stop the clock. There is no grace period. There is no pause,' the report cited European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier as saying. A risk-based regulation for applications of artificial intelligence, the AI Act bans a handful of 'unacceptable risk' use cases outright, such as cognitive behavioral manipulation or social scoring. It also defines a set of 'high-risk' uses, such as biometrics and facial recognition, or AI used in domains like education and employment. App developers will need to register their systems and meet risk and quality management obligations to gain access to the EU market. Another category of AI apps, such as chatbots, are considered 'limited risk' and subject to lighter transparency obligations. The EU started rolling out the AI Act last year in a staggered fashion, with the full rules coming into force by mid-2026.

Stellantis Pro One begins Cargo Box BEV production in Italy

Stellantis Pro One, the commercial vehicles division of Stellantis, has announced the start of production for the Cargo Box battery electric vehicle (BEV) at the Atessa plant in Italy. This facility is known for manufacturing Stellantis' Large Vans, such as the Citroën Relay, Fiat Professional Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, and Vauxhall Movano. The Cargo Box BEV has a cargo capacity of 18.3m3. Its interior dimensions measure 4,230mm in length, 2,032mm in width, and 2,150mm in height. Based on the Battery Electric Chassis Cab version, it delivers 410Nm of maximum torque with a power of 200kW (270hp), coupled with a 110kWh battery, allowing for a driving range of up to 323km. For customers requiring additional cargo space, the Cargo Box BEV will also be available in the L4 configuration, which increases the cargo volume to 20.5m3, with an internal length of 4,500mm and a height of 2,300mm. Stellantis Pro One has enhanced the Large Van range by introducing 22kW AC charging as standard, enabling a full charge in six hours, which is half the time required by the former 11kW solution. The Atessa plant features 15km of assembly line production, the 'largest body shop' in the Stellantis network, and a paint shop that adheres to the latest energy and environmental sustainability standards. Capable of producing more than 1,200 different configuration types, the Atessa plant offers a comprehensive production ecosystem with 14 engines, four types of transmission, more than 300 options, and eight van volumes, resulting in more than 2,500 different versions. It is also a hub for Stellantis CustomFit, a conversion and customisation programme that includes partnership with more than 550 certified partners globally. Stellantis Pro One division head Anne Abboud said: 'The launch of the Cargo Box BEV confirms the outstanding journey of this plant dedicated to proactively and quickly meeting the needs of our professional clients, according to the principles of efficiency, maximum quality, and time to market.' Recently, Stellantis has chosen ABB's PixelPaint technology for delivering precision paint finishes for DS Automobiles' new DS N°8 all-electric flagship. Debenhams expands AI integration with AWS to boost marketplace expansion

The company has entered into a new multi-year partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to optimise operations and expedite the scaling of new brands through AI-driven tools. Currently, the Group utilises AWS cloud services on the Debenhams platform. AWS's serverless cloud technology supports the retailer's marketplace model by enabling quicker onboarding of third-party sellers, expanding product offerings, and streamlining the purchasing process. Building upon this existing framework, Debenhams will implement advanced technologies like Generative AI (GenAI) to achieve greater operational efficiencies and improve personalisation. AI Enhancements in Retail Experience AI-generated content, facilitated by Amazon Bedrock—a managed service for building and scaling GenAI applications—will allow Debenhams Group to automate product descriptions and translations for thousands of products. This automation helps to enhance consistency, localisation, and market readiness speed. The automation process has increased efficiency twentyfold in creating product descriptions. Additionally, translations into six languages occur automatically, accelerating international market entry and improving global customer access. Furthermore, Debenhams' Interactive AI Room Styler, developed in collaboration with the AWS Prototyping investment programme, enables customers to upload photos, select design styles, and receive personalised decor suggestions linked directly to purchasable items. AI-driven product attribution and taxonomy will also enhance search functionality and navigation, allowing customers to find relevant products more efficiently. Following a successful initial deployment across Debenhams and its associated labels, the group plans to integrate AWS technology across its other brands. Boohoo is the latest brand to adopt AWS's AI technologies within weeks. Debenhams Group CEO Dan Finley stated: 'Collaborating with AWS is a key part of our long-term strategy to transform Debenhams Group into a modern, technology-led retailer. We've successfully replaced outdated legacy systems with scalable, cloud-first architecture that's adaptable, resilient and built to support innovation well into the Group's future. 'Our strategic investment in AI and emerging technologies will not only future proof the business but create a faster, smarter and more personalized experience for our customers. Working closely with a hand-picked team of engineers and AWS specialists, together we're not only accelerating our digital road-map but making Debenhams Group an exciting place to work for the next generation of tech talent.' Amazon Web Services head of Retail & Consumer Packaged Goods for UK & Ireland Duncan Stewart said: 'We're delighted to expand our collaboration with Debenhams Group as they continue to accelerate their adoption of AI. The team at Debenhams has already achieved impressive results, developing a highly innovative digital commerce platform on AWS that is a strong example in the retail industry. 'By leveraging the flexibility and scalability of the cloud, Debenhams Group now has the technology foundations to quickly build and deploy innovative new AI-powered products and services across all of its brands, which will help drive business productivity and growth. We look forward to supporting their continued success.' In March, UK fashion conglomerate Boohoo Group announced that it would continue with its Debenhams Group rebrand despite major shareholder and fellow UK fashion conglomerate Frasers Group voting against the resolution.
