Tennis world rocked by 'awful' drama at French Open as Aussie handed boost

Yahoo29-05-2025
French Open fans were left stunned after Casper Ruud played through injury and showed class after he was knocked out in the second round to open up a path for Aussie Alexei Popyrin. Ruud is a Roland Garros finalist and recently won the Madrid Open as he entered the grand slam in excellent form.
However, he appeared to be hampered by a knee injury in just the second round as he succumbed to Nuno Borges as the Portuguese ran away with the match in four sets. After dropping the first set, Borges was way too strong winning 2-6 6-4 6-1 6-0 with Ruud calling for the trainer having battled throughout the contest.
Ruud never gave up and won the respect of tennis fans as he battled through the pain in tough conditions with the rain causing havoc. However, fans claimed it was 'awful' watching Ruud break down as he offered little fight in the fourth set when he was bagelled.
Speaking after the shock loss, Ruud admitted he has been carrying a knee injury since the start of the clay court season. But didn't want to give up. "As we know, it's a hectic clay season, and I decided to kind of push through it doing some anti-inflammatory pills and painkillers to try to get rid of it, which has helped to a certain degree but not enough.
"I will have some more time now to let it heal and rest for a long time." Unfortunately, Ruud was left frustrated with the current system for players having claimed it's hard for them to withdraw from events when they are fighting for points and money.
"It's kind of like a rat race when it comes to the rankings as well," he said. "You feel you're obligated to play with certain rules that the ATP have set up with the mandatory events." Fans felt for Ruud having watched the tennis favourite struggle in a grand slam that has seen him reach the final in 2022 and 2023.
It was awful to watch, awful conditions and very sad for Ruud being injured.

Casper Ruud earned my respect today, clearly injured after the 1st set, but he played out the whole match out of respect for his opponent and the fans. Way to go Casper and hope it's nothing serious 🙏

The balls do look soooo muddy in the Ruud-Borges match, but I think Casper is allowing it to get into his head too much. That last service game looked unfocused, as Borges goes up a break in the second set!

But Ruud's loss opens up the path for Popyrin. Before this year, Popyrin had never been past the first round of the French Open having struggled on clay. However, the No.25 seed has now advanced to the third round after defeating Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets.
Popyrin has endured an up-and-down season in 2025, but his backhand has improved under new co-coach Wayne Ferreira. And he is looking confident in Paris as he takes on World No.42 Borges in the third round.
"I've always had that confidence. On my day I can beat anybody, but that's not important to me. What's important to me is bringing a consistent level day in, day out. That's what I've struggled with in the past," he said.
As a junior Popyrin enjoyed playing on clay having won the boys' championship at Roland Garros eight years ago. And he has finally translated his form to clay in 2025 having made solid progress to reach the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo and Geneva.
While Alex de Minaur will be hoping to join him, Popyrin became the first Australian to advance to the last 32 this year. And he has done it without dropping a set. And he will be hoping he can continue his form against Borges in the next round.

James Franklin talks injury updates for Penn State

Coming off the longest season in Penn State history meant some injury situations lingered a little farther into the offseason than the program is accustomed to seeing. With training camp open in Happy Valley with big expectations placed on the program going into the 2025 season, Penn State head coach James Franklin says the health situations will start getting better in time for the season, with some exceptions. "[Some] of these guys are limited up there," Franklin said when meeting with the media on Saturday in Beaver Stadium. "They are ready to go and I think if you asked them, they could play in a game right now. But our trainers and doctors, you know, smart, we hold them in the limited category until they actually go out and do it." Franklin explained players were to be reevaluated following the first practice of the camp, and that could lead to some quick upgrades with player availability. Franklin did not show concern for a lengthy list of players showing up as limited at the moment. Among the players coming back from injury and standing out is offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh, who started 10 games for the Nittany Lions last season before being sidelined by an injury. Donkoh could be an option at multiple offensive line positions now that he is healthy and Nolan Rucci has proven himself at the right tackle position. That has given the entire offensive line a boost with depth in its favor with a healthy Donkoh in the mix. Of course, the injury updates were not all positive for Penn State this weekend. It has been reported that wide receiver and special teams returner Kaden Saunders will be out for an extended period of time with what has been reported as a long-term injury. Saunders was limited due to injury last season and could potentially be out for the entire 2025 season already. Penn State's 2025 season kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 30 with a home game against Nevada. Follow Kevin McGuire on Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Bills mounting list of injuries grows to 15 players, with additions of WRs Shakir and Palmer

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott put aside his concerns over the team's growing injury list, which now includes starting receiver Khalil Shakir, by saying he has no choice but to move forward in returning to training camp on Sunday. McDermott followed the Bills day off by opening his pre-practice news conference listing 15 members of Buffalo's 91-player roster as either being limited or not practicing. Shakir was among the latest additions and listed week to week with a high ankle sprain after he was hurt during the Bills annual Red and Blue scrimmage at their home stadium on Friday. Also injured Friday were receiver Josh Palmer (groin), one of the team's prized offseason free agent additions, and linebacker Shaq Thompson (groin). The injuries have particularly hit Buffalo's receivers, with Curtis Samuel (hamstring) and backup Kaden Prather also sidelined. That leaves Keon Coleman as the only projected starter still healthy with Buffalo preparing to open the preseason by hosting the New York Giants on Saturday. 'What we've tried to do is pull back on some things in hopes of getting some numbers back. And that hasn't helped,' McDermott added, in reference to cutting back on the number and length of padded practices. 'We're moving forward. It's time for us to go and we got to get some work done and move this team forward.' The most serious injury has been to rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who is out indefinitely after spraining a ligament in his right knee last week. Hairston is watching practice on crutches with no definitive timetable for his return. 'It's going to take some time. He's week to week,' McDermott said of the first-round draft pick who was competing for a starting job opposite Christian Benford. 'Here's a young player that is not only missing just the moving around, but also the mental part of the experience you get with through the reps,' he added. 'So there's no way to avoid it, he's going to be behind when he comes back.' Injuries have been an issue for the five-time defending AFC East champions since opening training camp with four players on injured lists, including tight end Dawson Knox (calf) and right tackle Spencer Brown (back). Of those four, backup center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger (calf) remains sidelined with McDermott hoping the player will be available to return in time for Buffalo's preseason finale at Tampa Bay on Aug. 23. Brown resumed practicing on Sunday as did starting linebacker Terrel Bernard, who missed a week with a hamstring injury. The rash of injuries has also affected Buffalo's special teams unit with kicker Tyler Bass sidelined with a pelvis issue. ___ AP NFL:

Lions health updates August 3: Campbell presser, game follow-ups, & practice news

Dan Campbell provided some health updates today in his press conference. Relevant quotes are included below. There were no surprises coming out of the preseason game on July 31 which is always a good thing. I've also included some follow-ups from the preseason game as well as issues from the past week. From today's Dan Campbell press conference.... Dan Skipper - left ankle sprain, July 31 "He'll probably be down for about a week. Got his ankle a little bit." This injury occurred on the first play of the 2nd quarter. Video of the injury was obscured both on the live feed and the all-22 angle. All indications are that this is not a severe ankle sprain, and he'll be fine soon. Taylor Decker - shoulder cleanup surgery, June or July "He will be out there individual group. Don't see him doing any team right now." Decker was expected to return to practice after the first preseason game, and he has stayed true to that schedule. He should be ready for the season. Terrion Arnold - hamstring, July 29 "It's not a major hamstring. This is a low-grade. We're hoping to have him back by the middle of the week." A one-week absence for a hamstring means it's very minor. He had an even more minor calf issue on July 24 for which he returned to practice the next day. Kenny Yeboah - right knee hyperflexion, July 31 Campbell stated that Yeboah avoided any significant injury during the game. This was expected but still welcome news. ____________________________________________ Following up on others from the game.... Hendon Hooker - head trauma, July 31 Hooker had his head violently whiplashed to the ground which was highly concerning for a concussion. Now three days later, it appears he has very fortunately escaped a concussion diagnosis. Campbell stated that Hooker will start the next preseason game. Ennis Rakestraw - chest contusion, July 20 Jeff Risdon reviewed the film and observed that Rakestraw's chest injury is clearly still bothering him. This injury was reported as a contusion which can be very painful and cause a mass effect from an underlying hematoma (pooling of blood related to a bruise). A contusion isn't a long-term concern, so hopefully his symptoms resolve soon which should result in better performance. A forceful blunt trauma to the chest can also cause a rib sprain, rib fracture, or a rib cartilage injury which could all take longer to recover from than a contusion. Craig Reynolds - chest, July 31 Reynolds was down briefly after appearing to land on the ball. There have been no follow-up reports of an injury. Isaac TeSlaa - left knee TeSlaa has been wearing a left knee sleeve during training camp for unknown reasons. Whatever might be going on didn't slow him down whatsoever during the preseason game as he flashed scary, big-play potential. ____________________________________ From Dan Campbell's press conference a few days ago... Kerby Joseph - knee (presumed left) "Not major….just a little bit of a knee irritation. Hoping to get him back Saturday [yesterday]." Joseph posted an Instagram pic showing a left knee sleeve. He is back at practice today so there is nothing major going on. Josh Paschal - unspecified "cleanup" surgery, on NFI "He's on schedule to be ready for early September to start practicing." The NFI (non-football injury) designation as opposed to PUP (physically unable to perform) continues to be interesting here. It could imply (among other things) that he was injured doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing or that the injury is non-orthopedic related. By placing him on NFI as opposed to PUP, the Lions are not obligated to pay his base salary which could become relevant if he's not ready for the start of the season. __________________________________ From practice today...
