Super Su-30: India plans Rs 60,000 crore booster for its main fighter jet. From radars to missiles, here's what it'll get
Su-30MKI to be upgraded for future needs
The Su-30MKI is the IAF's main combat aircraft. Developed jointly with Russia, it is a 4.5-generation jet. India currently operates 272 Su-30MKIs. Under the
Super-30 project
, 84 of these jets are reportedly being planned for an upgrade over the next 3–4 years. The upgrade is expected to cost between $2.4 and $7.8 billion (₹66,829 crore), as reported by India Defense News. These upgrades aim to extend the operational life of the aircraft until 2055.
Twelve Su-30MKIs have been lost in crashes. The government has asked
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
(HAL) to produce 12 more to replace these losses, at a cost of ₹13,500 crore.

What's changing in the Super-30 upgrade?
Several key systems will be added or replaced in the Su-30MKI as part of the upgrade:
Virupaksha radar:
Developed by DRDO, this new radar is based on gallium nitride (GaN) technology and uses an active electronically scanned array (AESA) design. It can detect targets up to 300–400 km away and includes 2,400 transmit-receive modules.
Live Events
Digital cockpit:
The aircraft will receive a modern user interface and new avionics to improve pilot awareness and onboard system coordination.
Flight control system:
A new 64-bit Digital Flight Control Computer will replace the older 32-bit system, enhancing flight performance and stability.
Air-to-air missiles:
The aircraft will be equipped with indigenous Astra Mk-2 and Mk-3 missiles, which can engage targets up to 300 km away.
Russian R-37M integration:
This hypersonic missile, with a 400 km range and speeds up to Mach 6, is designed for long-range air combat.
Other additions include a new electronic warfare suite, improved secure communication systems, and a modern infrared search and track (IRST) system.
Focus on stealth detection and future radars
Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit recently said that a photonics radar is being considered for both the Su-30MKI and Rafale fleets. 'This radar will significantly improve the aircraft's ability to identify and track stealth targets due to its advanced sensing capabilities.' Photonics radar uses light-based components, which are faster and more resistant to jamming than traditional systems.
Engine choice: reliability over raw power
There will be no engine upgrade as India has decided to retain the current AL-31FP engine for its Su-30MKI fleet, instead of switching to Russia's more powerful AL-41F1S engine. The AL-31FP generates 123 kN of thrust, while the AL-41F1S offers 142 kN.
Addressing the broader fighter shortfall
India originally planned to buy 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) but ended up purchasing only 36 Rafales. Former Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria had said, 'The IAF needs around 250 aircraft of Rafale-class capability to meet future operational requirements.'
The indigenous
Tejas Light Combat Aircraft
(LCA) programme, despite facing delays due to engine supply issues, continues to be a key part of the IAF's future plans. The IAF plans to induct 352 Tejas fighters across Mk1 and Mk2 variants.
A strategic upgrade in response to evolving threats
The Super-30 project comes after lessons learned during the 2019 Balakot and
Operation Sindoor
air strikes. During the Balakot strikes, Su-30MKIs were reportedly at a disadvantage compared to Pakistan's F-16s due to inferior radar and sensors. Similar deficiencies were observed when Su-30s equipped with R-77 missiles, which have a BVR range of nearly 100 km, were found lacking against Pakistan's JF-17s equipped with PL-15E missiles, which have a range of nearly 150 km. The planned upgrades aim to address these weaknesses by improving detection range, missile reach, and combat readiness.
The modernisation also boosts India's deterrence capabilities against regional rivals, especially as China and Pakistan continue to upgrade their air fleets.
Preparing for the next generation
India is also working on the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a fifth-generation fighter jet project led by DRDO and HAL. It will include stealth features, internal weapon storage, advanced avionics, and supercruise capability. The aim is to produce a fully indigenous next-gen fighter within the next decade.

$565m credit line for Maldives, talks on free trade pact
PM Modi and President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu (Pic credit: AP) The turnaround in India-Maldives ties in the past 10 months - following the acrimonious removal of Indian military personnel from the strategically located country - seemed complete as India announced a fresh $565 million line of credit (LoC) for the Indian Ocean neighbour and signed an agreement to reduce its annual debt repayment burden by 40%. As President Mohamed Muizzu hosted PM Modi for the latter's first visit to the country under his presidency, receiving Modi at the airport, both sides affirmed their commitment to a bilateral investment pact and a free trade agreement, for which the terms of reference were finalised. Seven MoUs and agreements were signed. Muizzu had invited Modi as the guest of honour for the Maldivian independence day celebrations. India had extended an $800 million LoC in 2019 under the previous pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party govt but on this occasion the LoC is in Indian currency (Rs 4,850 crore). PM: India & Maldives will soon finalise an investment treaty The president said after his meeting with Narendra Modi it will be used for priority projects in defence, healthcare, education and housing. Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said Muizzu reiterated the Maldives's condemnation of the Pahalgam attack. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Were So Beautiful Before; Now Look At Them; Number 10 Will Shock You Reportingly Undo Muizzu has been seen as a pro-China leader in the past because of his association with the India Out campaign while in the opposition, and his insistence on driving out Indian military from the archipelago after taking over as president in Nov 2023. Muizzu travelled to India in Oct last year for an official visit, during which he said Maldives would do nothing to hurt India's security interests and would prioritise the relationship. The leaders then launched a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership to resuscitate the relationship. Modi said India is proud of the fact that it's Maldives's most reliable partner and that for India, it's always friendship first. "To give a new impetus to our development partnership, we have decided to provide a line of credit of $565 million, or approximately Rs 5,000 crore, to Maldives. It will be used for projects related to infrastructure development in line with the priorities of the people of Maldives," said Modi, calling the relationship older than history and as deep as oceans. One of the agreements signed is expected to bring down Male's annual LoC debt repayment from $51 million to $29 million. Modi said that both countries will soon finalise a bilateral investment treaty and their target now is "from paperwork to prosperity", adding a local currency settlement system under discussion will facilitate trade. There was focus on defence and security cooperation as the new defence ministry building built with Indian assistance was inaugurated. Asked whether there was any discussion about China, Misri said in a press briefing that India continued to work very closely with the Maldives on any issue that might "impinge on not just our security but our common security in this region that we share". Modi will participate in the independence day celebrations on Saturday and meet political functionaries. The visit saw the leaders virtually inaugurating a roads and drainage system project in Addu city and six high impact community development projects in other cities.

Orphaned By Maoists, They Vow To Dismantle Red Infra
Nagpur: In 2012, Maoists killed Suresh Alam, a former gram panchayat member in Nandigaon, Gadchiroli, suspecting him of being a police informer. His daughter, Naame Nagamani Alam, has now been directly appointed as a police constable. In 2005, a village warden Lalsu Pungati was lynched in a guerrilla kangaroo court in Nargunda, Gadchiroli. His son, Sainath Pungati, was directly appointed as a police constable. Both received their job letters from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 22. The ceremony marked a significant step in rehabilitation of families affected by Maoist atrocities. So far, 56 victims have been recruited into the police force in three years. Once helpless and cringing under fear after Maoists dragged their fathers out of their homes and slaughtered them in public, these orphans of insurgency have transformed their grief into resolve. Years passed, and the fear diminished as law enforcement turned the tables on the guerrillas. "We witnessed our father's killing. His lifeless body and my inconsolable mother are still fresh in our memory. We will serve the police with sincerity and combat Maoists," said an appointee. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Is What First-Class Living Really Looks Like Explore Undo The Maharashtra govt has now stepped in and is offering an opportunity to those who bore the brunt of Maoist kangaroo courts. Their children are now joining the commando force, determined to dismantle the regime that abruptly snatched their fathers' protective care. "The recruitments are based on special relaxations for Scheduled Tribe categories, requiring only physical attributes and a minimum qualification of Class 7, with no written examinations," SP Gadchiroli, Neelotpal, said. These appointments are part of a 2018 govt decision to rehabilitate Maoist-hit families by offering direct appointments to Group C and D posts in various departments. Fadnavis, who also virtually inaugurated new administrative buildings for police posts at Dechalipetha and Jimlagatta hamlets, stated the govt is keen to rehabilitate families who suffered in the hands of Maoists. The appointment of Naame Nagamani and Sainath by the CM himself symbolizes a powerful shift, stated IG State Anti-naxal operation cell, Sandip Patil. Once victims of Maoist terror, they are now empowered to protect their communities, vowing to end the menace that shattered their families.

Rahul pushes for OBC quota in English medium schools
Hyderabad: Leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday said the caste survey conducted by the Telangana govt—and the subsequent analysis by an independent expert group—made it clear that education, especially in English medium, is the most critical driver of socio-economic mobility for OBCs. Building on these findings, he announced that the Indian National Congress will push for reservations for OBCs and other marginalised groups in English medium private educational institutions—marking what he called the party's third major step towards OBC empowerment. Speaking at the Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Rahul said: "The Telangana caste survey revealed that those with an English medium education advanced further than even uneducated landlords and wealthy individuals. This does not mean Hindi or regional languages like Bengali, Tamil, or Kannada aren't important—they are—but English is crucial for progress." You Can Also Check: Hyderabad AQI | Weather in Hyderabad | Bank Holidays in Hyderabad | Public Holidays in Hyderabad He criticised the BJP's stance on phasing out English, questioning the hypocrisy of its leaders, whose own children are enrolled in English medium schools. Rahul Gandhi outlined the Congress party's three-pronged agenda for OBC upliftment: Conducting caste surveys in all states where the party is in power, breaking the 50% cap on total reservations, and holding a national caste census if voted to power at Centre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Start planning your next adventure today Hotel Deals | Search Ads Browse Now Undo He pointed out that OBCs, despite making up nearly 50% of India's population, own no major corporate or media houses and have little to no representation in the judiciary and top institutions. Admitting past shortcomings, he said: "I did not fully understand the extent of injustice faced by OBCs earlier. And the OBCs themselves were not aware of their strength. This is because the RSS and BJP have systematically erased OBC history from textbooks. Unlike SC and ST history, OBC struggles are invisible in the school curriculum. That is deliberate." Calling the RSS the 'biggest enemy' of OBCs, Rahul blamed 'Manuvaadi ideology' for institutional discrimination and vowed to correct past neglect. He praised chief minister Revanth Reddy, saying the state's caste survey was a bold step. "Revanth Reddy told me he had no choice. He saw firsthand the injustice being done to OBCs and felt compelled to act," Rahul Gandhi said.
