The crucial contributors who need to shake off quiet first halves if the Mets and Yankees are to reach their goals

New York Post2 days ago
The Mets and Yankees enter the All-Star break with all of their goals intact.
The two teams are close to first place in their respective divisions — the Mets trail the Phillies by a half game and the Yankees are two back of the Blue Jays — despite dreadful June stretches.
Obviously, the two rosters will look different after the July 31 trade deadline. But to get to where they want to go, both the Mets and the Yankees will need better performances from some key players.

Revolution melt in second half as winless streak stretches to seven with loss at Red Bulls

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg each scored twice for New York. Daniel Edelman put the Red Bulls on the board in the 56th minute with a shot from outside the box that took a deflection off Revolution defender Keegan Hughes in the middle of the box and past a helpless Aljaz Ivacic. Revolution defender Brayan Ceballos had to come off injured in the 66th minute and was replaced by Wyatt Omsberg. Advertisement Choupo-Moting and Forsberg each got their first of the game two minutes apart for a 3-2 lead in the 72nd minute, the go-ahead goal coming on a beautiful turn and left-footed strike from the top of the box. They followed suit a little later. Choupo-Moting made it 4-2 as he made a run into the middle of the box to receive a pass from Ronald Donkor in the 83rd minute, and Forsberg converted a penalty kick five minutes later. Advertisement It was a great start for the Revolution, who went ahead after just five minutes on a goal from Leo Campana on a quick counterattack down the left side. They tacked on a second in the 30th minute when Luca Langoni's shot from just outside the 6-yard box struck the post, but deflected off Red Bulls defender Kyle Duncan and into the net. New York had a 58-42 edge in possession and 21-13 advantage in shots. Campana added a second of the game in stoppage time, giving him four goals on the season. The Argentine broke a seven-game goalless spell, scoring for the first time since May 3. The Revolution host Orlando City on Saturday night in the final game before the All-Star break. With 12 matches remaining, New England stands seven points behind ninth-place Charlotte FC for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Keith Pearson can be reached at

2025 MLB All-Star Game on FOX Posts 7.2 Million In Viewership

An epic finish featuring the first ever home-run swing-off. A memorable tribute to one of baseball's greatest legends. The 95th MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta proved to be an instant classic. Tuesday's telecast also drew in 7.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched All-Star event, FOX Sports announced on Wednesday. That figure was also the most viewers for a FOX telecast since Super Bowl Sunday. Viewership for the Midsummer Classic peaked at 8.1 million between 9:15-9:30 p.m. ET. The National League defeated the American League for only the second time since 2013. After finishing 6-6 after nine innings at Truist Park, the game went to a swing-off for the first time in All-Star Game history. Philadelphia Phillies DH Kyle Schwarber earned MVP honors after he smashed three homers in the swing-off that helped the NL grab the win. As hosts, the Atlanta Braves also honored one of the greatest players of all time, Henry Aaron, with a touching tribute during the sixth inning that recreated his record-breaking 715th home run from 1974. The game had plenty of top moments beforehand as well. The NL took a six-run lead into the sixth inning thanks to home runs by Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll. But the AL responded with a three-run homer by Athletics DH Brent Rooker. Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. then got the AL back within one run heading into the bottom of the ninth with a two-run hit. Witt then scored after Guardians' Steven Kwan beat out a ground-ball for an infield hit to tie it up and send the game to the home run swing off. Schwarber then secured the victory for the NL in the swing-off with a 4-3 tally, capping off an incredible night in Atlanta. The 2026 All-Star Game will be hosted by the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Breanna Stewart shines with 24 points to lead Liberty past Caitlin Clark-less Fever

We've got you covered on the Liberty beat Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Madeline Kenney about all things Liberty and WNBA. tRY IT NOW If the Liberty needed another glimpse at the evolution of Breanna Stewart, if their superstar needed another performance to demonstrate that she, still, can be just as dominant even if her new-look shot profile doesn't mirror the one from her most dominant seasons, then Wednesday served as that. With a right groin injury forcing the Indiana Fever to navigate without Caitlin Clark, Stewart ensured the Liberty capitalized on the opportunity, pouring in 24 points during their 98-77 win at Barclays Center and helping them enter the All-Star break with four wins in five games. Advertisement But in a season where a career-low 21.7 percent of Stewart's shots are 3-pointers and a career-low 21.0 percent of those attempts have gone in, Stewart again relied on attempts inside the paint — all 10 of her makes — and shot just one 3-pointer to help pace a balanced Liberty offense that shot 58 percent from the field. Sabrina Ionescu (15 points, season-high nine assists) and Natasha Cloud (14 points) also ensured the Fever never had a chance at mounting a comeback, but the offensive burst revolved around Stewart, who topped 20 points for just the third time in the past nine games. 3 Breanna Stewart, who scored 24 points, shoots over Lexie Hull during the third quarter of the Liberty's 98-77 win over the Fever on July 16, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Advertisement Part of Stewart's changed shot profile, assistant coach Olaf Lange told The Post before the game, stemmed from her needing to take on more of a facilitator role. Her 'whole offensive profile is way [more] diversified,' Lange said, and in scenarios when Ionescu draws an opponent's top defender and Cloud struggles to pierce the paint, it opened up avenues for Stewart to drive, to convert shots around the basket, to still contribute at similar levels to her MVP campaigns even if her primary method for scoring has changed. It helped Stewart produce a vintage scoring line Wednesday. She helped the Liberty take an eight-point lead after the first quarter and a 15-point advantage after 20 minutes. Then, to open the scoring in the second half, she collected a pass from Cloud near the left block and converted a jumper. Then, possessions later, Ionescu fed Stewart backdoor for another layup. She converted baskets out in transition, grabbed 11 rebounds and finished with her fifth double-double of the season. 3 Breanna Stewart drives down the court during the third quarter of the Liberty's win. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post Advertisement By the time Stewart checked out with under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Liberty's lead hovered around 20 points again. Their defense limited the Fever to 38 percent shooting in the first half. Their offense — with Stewart as its focal point — made those empty Indiana possessions matter even more, and 16 points from Kelsey Mitchell and 12 from Sophie Cunningham could only produce so much of a response. Check out more newsletters The new-look approach isn't something the Liberty pinpointed or started working on during the offseason, but rather the result of adjusting to what the offense needed on the fly. Stewart opened the season in a slump again, one that March knee surgery, Lange acknowledged, could've contributed to. The injury impacted her knee and leg strength. It impacted her stamina, too, after playing 'an entire Unrivaled season with a knee that wasn't 100 percent,' Lange said. Stewart hasn't missed a regular-season game, but the adjustment still took time. Advertisement 3 Sabrina Ionescu reacts after hitting a 3-point shot during the first quarter of the Liberty's win. Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post At some point, Lange said, Stewart's 3-point numbers will increase again. That could happen later this season. Maybe in 2026 or another year. 'But for now,' Lange said, 'I think this is what it is.' And on nights like Wednesday, Stewart showed why that's more than enough.
