Online students lose thousands of dollars following closure of SC's Limestone University
GAFFNEY — Limestone University required students to pre-pay for summer classes. Now that the college has closed for good, some say they're out thousands of dollars.
The school's initial announcement that the 179-year-old, private college in South Carolina's Upstate needed to raise $6 million to stay open came as online students faced a deadline.
On April 13, school officials told virtual students, including Mike Thielen, to submit their payments for summer classes within five days, according to emails reviewed by the SC Daily Gazette. The April 16 announcement of potential closure said online classes would continue, suggesting online students need not worry.
But after two weeks of frantic fundraising fell short, the school's governing board ultimately voted for total closure. Online offerings ended too.
'That blindsided everybody,' Thielen said.
It's been six weeks since the board vote. Thielen and half a dozen others say the school has still not refunded their money.
Limestone personnel designated as a point of contact after closure have not responded to emails sent by the SC Daily Gazette.

At first, Thielen received email replies from staff saying they were working on returning the $4,000 he paid for two classes.
He followed up several times and received the same response until layoffs became official and people stopped returning messages altogether.
'I don't know if I'll ever see my money again,' Thielen said. 'Everyone is passing the buck. It's just really shameful.'
Thielen enrolled in Limestone's online program while working for a Spartanburg software company, which had a partnership agreement with the school. When he took a new job, he continued studying with Limestone, hoping to become the first person in his family with a master's degree.
The online Master of Business Administration student, who lives near Fort Worth, Texas, and works as a healthcare recruiter, was just three classes away from finishing his degree. Now he's left finding a new school — one that may not accept all of his transfer credits. And he'll have to come up with more money to pay for it, on top of what he lost.
'It was just a total failure of leadership,' he said. 'They rushed to shut it down and now they're hiding.'
SC governor calls for study to consider consolidating colleges ahead of 'enrollment cliff'
The story is similar for South Carolina Army National Guard member Thomas Martin.
The master sergeant from Charleston has worked for the Guard full time for two decades and was pursuing a bachelor's degree in business on the side. Martin said Limestone's online program was a popular choice among his fellow guardsmen because they could use federal and state benefits offered to military members to pay for it.
When Limestone's final spring semester ended, Martin still had about $1,000 in state aid available, which he had hoped to put toward summer classes or textbook costs. The school, which received students' allotment directly from the state Commission on Higher Education, has yet to credit him for those unused state dollars.
'I had a great experience with Limestone up until this,' he said. 'Now they're not even acknowledging my emails. It's disappointing.'
Martin said he was repeatedly referred to South Carolina's higher education agency for help. The commission's staff told him they would research the matter but weren't hopeful that the aid dollars would be returned.
Commission spokesman Mark Swart said the agency has not received any official, written complaints against Limestone at this time. He said the agency referred several students to Limestone's former chief of staff, who the school designated as a point of contact.
Martin told the Gazette he didn't realize the complaint process existed.
When Limestone announced the final decision to close, laying off 478 people employed by the college, leadership cited enrollment declines impacting colleges nationwide and rising costs as the drivers behind the school's financial straits.
Limestone's enrollment fell by half over the past decade, from 3,214 students in fall 2014, according to state higher education data, to 1,600 this semester, including both online and in-person students, according to the university's announcement.
Auditors reported the school had a $7.6 million operating loss as of June 2024. To make up for losses, the school had borrowed some $22 million from its small endowment, which had a balance of just $9.2 million last June.
The school also faced an additional $30 million in debt, largely from a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development loan, which Limestone took out in 2018 to construct a new library and student center, purchase a residence hall and refinance previous debt. The school offered campus land and buildings as collateral.
So far, USDA is not calling in that loan.
In a statement, a USDA spokesperson said it 'takes its stewardship of taxpayer funds seriously' and 'continues to actively engage with the university's board and leadership to explore all available options to protect the federal investment and ensure the best possible outcome for the community and taxpayers.'
The school also has not filed for federal bankruptcy protections. No liens have been filed against the school in South Carolina district court. Nor are there any small claims filings from students at this time.

Not only does Limestone's closure impact the college's students, it also affected college employees and 13 K-12 public charter schools that relied on the college's associated charter school management operations: Limestone Charter Association.
A former employee has filed suit in federal court alleging the school violated national labor laws when it only gave two weeks' notice to workers. Federal law requires companies with 100 or more employees to give at least 60 days' notice for layoffs, though there are some exceptions.
In its notice letter filed with the state employment agency, Limestone claimed the exemption allowed for employers actively seeking funding that an earlier notice could have jeopardized. The school has yet to respond in court filings.
Meanwhile, the state Department of Education is allowing the Limestone Charter Association, which operates as a separate nonprofit with its own staff, to continue operations through the coming school year as the charter schools it serves search for a new authorizer.
According to staff at the K-12 agency, the charter association will continue to receive state funding and act as an authorizer until July 1, 2026. It cannot accept any new schools starting July 1, 2025, and the state Education Department is recommending charter schools apply to a new authorizer by December.

The U.S.-listed spot bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have attracted billions in investor capital in three months, amid increasing political pressure on the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) to cut rates. The relentless flows are now forcing "under-positioned" traders to chase upside through derivatives, reviving the bullish momentum in the cryptocurrency, according to Markus Thielen, founder of 10x Research. "The sharp surge in bitcoin ETF inflows since late April 2025 has been primarily driven by political pressure on the Federal Reserve, with Donald Trump openly demanding that Chair Jerome Powell cut rates to 1% and resign. What began as a partisan push has since broadened, with Federal Housing Finance Agency director Bill Pulte and Senator Cynthia Lummis also calling for Powell to step down, criticizing his perceived hawkish stance," Thielen said in a note to clients Thursday. Trump's repeated attacks on the Federal Reserve have revived memories of Turkish President Erdogan's similar actions between 2019 and 2021, which led to a broad-based shift away from Turkish assets and a crash in the Lira. Back then, Erdogan issued multiple decrees dismissing central bank officials for not cutting rates. Meanwhile, Trump has repeatedly called for Powell's resignation, saying his reluctance to cut rates is costing America billions of dollars. The minutes of the Fed meeting held on July 17-18 showed a growing divide over how policy should proceed from here. According to CNBC, Opinions ranged from a "couple" of officials who said the next cut could come as soon as this month to "some" who thought no reductions this year would be appropriate. The relentless ETF flows, combined with growing pressure on the Fed to cut rates, are finally forcing traders, who have been hesitant to commit to bullish trades, to re-enter the market fully. "Since mid-April, Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated $15 billion worth of Bitcoin, and notably, this buying has continued uninterrupted, even as Bitcoin has consolidated since mid-May. This steady demand now appears to be forcing underpositioned traders back into the market, as suggested by positioning data from the derivatives space," Thielen said. Traders have been chasing call options at strikes $130,000, as CoinDesk noted early this week. A call option represents a bullish bet on the market, with the demand for the $ 130,000 call reflecting expectations for a price surge above that level. These bullish flows are consistent with the positive seasonality typically observed in July. Data tracked by Coinglass shows BTC has put in a positive performance in July in eight out of the past 12 years, with an average gain of over 7%. "Combined with historically strong seasonality in July and potential bullish catalysts from upcoming macro data and policy developments, the backdrop remains supportive for further upside," Thielen noted. Why bitcoin isn't rallying even with billions of dollars in ETF inflows
The stock market has made an extraordinary comeback from its lows earlier in the year despite lingering questions about the economy and rising geopolitical tensions, but bitcoin's gains have been more muted. The flagship cryptocurrency hasn't rallied in a big way since the beginning of the year. Since May 9, it's traded in a tight $10,000 range – with a brief blip above that ceiling to its all-time high of nearly $112,000, which was still just a step above its previous record. And this is despite billions of dollars in ETF inflows in that period. On Wednesday, bitcoin ETFs logged 12 consecutive sessions of inflows. The trend followed a second week in a row of inflows. Both milestones underscore the strength of institutional demand even amid market uncertainty. The funds have collectively seen about $3.5 billion in inflows this month, while the price of bitcoin itself has risen just 2%, according to Coin Metrics. One reason for that could be that despite interest in bitcoin remaining at elevated levels, early megawhales are holding on to their coins for longer, waiting to offload them in greater amounts to today's biggest bitcoin buyers, ETFs and corporate treasuries, in an "orderly" and "well managed" shift in dynamics, according to 10x Research's Markus Thielen. "There is this change of ownership happening," said Thielen, CEO of the digital assets investment research firm. "We are not seeing a lot of real demand right now because the demand has been almost perfectly offset by the selling from these larger wallets." Data from CryptoQuant shows that wallets holding between 100 and 1,000 bitcoins have been the biggest buyers this year. Julio Moreno, head of research at the firm, said bitcoin ETFs likely fall into that cohort. Meanwhile, whales (wallets holding between 1,000 and 10,000 coins) and megawhales (which CryptoQuant labels as humpbacks and whose wallets hold more than 10,000 coins) have been net sellers this year. Retail investors, wallets holding less than a bitcoin, have also been sellers. The two whale cohorts have been setting the bitcoin price for weeks. As long as buying from the 100-to-1,000-BTC holders outpaces the selling from the bigger whales, bitcoin's muted rally can continue, Thielen explained. If the opposite happens, momentum fades and the rally stalls, he said. Moreno highlighted that historically, whales have been regarded as having 1,000 to 10,000 bitcoin in a wallet. However, since the launch of bitcoin ETFs and the emergence of the bitcoin treasury companies, the number of so-called dolphins, as CryptoQuant labels the 100-1,000-BTC cohort, have grown because those institutions tend to spread their bitcoin holdings across many smaller wallets. For example, BlackRock and Strategy have about 550 and 490 unique wallet addresses, respectively, with an average of 1,290 coins per wallet for BlackRock and 927 for MicroStrategy, according to 10x Research. "In reality, these entities are in fact large holders, having purchased thousands of bitcoin," Moreno said. The biggest bitcoin holders are likely miners based in China. From 2013 to 2021, China accounted for as much as 75% of the global hashrate, or the measure of the computational power being used to secure the Bitcoin network and validate transactions. To date 19.9 million bitcoins have been mined. Chinese mining companies account for approximately 11 million to 15 million coins created in that period. They still retain control of at least 5 million coins, according to 10x Research. "In all the other previous peaks, these dormant wallets were waking up and sending bitcoin onto exchanges for liquidation," he said. "But this time, so far, it seems that these wallets are holding – holding tight and only releasing as many bitcoin as can be scooped up by ETFs and by Strategy." While Strategy, which rebranded this year from MicroStrategy, remains the biggest corporate buyer of bitcoin, its acquisition cadence has slowed from the more aggressive levels seen last year, due in part to its narrowing stock premium and increasing competition in corporate treasury adoption of bitcoin. "If megawhale selling accelerates further, a deeper correction is likely," Thielen said. "Conversely, if selling pressure eases while whale accumulation picks up, the next leg of the rally could begin." "At the moment, the imbalance creates a slight bearish bias, making a breakout unlikely without a clear shift in our tactical flow indicator. Until that signal improves, consolidation is expected to continue."

At least five to 10 years of experience in a related field is customary, and some even suggest 20 years of experience. This is a very new role, so the former is probably acceptable. The top candidate for the Chief Sustainability role wants to demonstrate experience across the board in roles at the entry level, progressing to management and senior leadership positions. When it comes to the best size of an organization to work for, there are pros and cons with large and small organizations. A small non-profit, for example, will make it easier to get promoted within and have access to greater opportunities to learn hands-on. A large organization, on the other hand, will have many more resources and better access to collaborators around the world. This is a great time to know yourself and what type of environment you know you'd thrive in; start there. The industry you work with matters. While there is no industry-wide certification to become a Chief Sustainability Officer, there are professional development programs that are common among those holding the role. You are co-creators of the world you are building. Leaders cannot ignore that virtual networking saves time and money and gives you the ability to network globally and learn things you can never learn by focusing on in-person networking.
