San Sebastian Lady Stags beat EAC to end NCAA Season 100 on high note
San Sebastian College-Recoletos defeated Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, to end its NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball campaign on a high note on Tuesday at the Filoil Centre in San Juan.
Von Dimaculangan stood out in the Lady Stags' last game with 19 out of their 20 excellent sets, to go with five points, as she distributed the ball for three spikers to score in double digits. Divine Garcia had 14 points, while KJ Dionisio and Julia Gonzales had 11 points apiece.
The Lady Stags ended the first round with a 5-4 record but eventually fell short in the second round to finish with a 8-10 card.
According to San Sebastian consultant Roger Gorayeb, the team might have been overconfident after the first round.
"Siguro ang ganda nung nilaro nila, akala nila ganoon na lang din. Overconfident," Gorayeb said, adding that the longer tournament schedule might have also been a factor in their campaign as they needed to adjust.
Gorayeb said on top of improving the Lady Stags' mental toughness, they will also try to recruit new players, especially with setter Dimaculangan leaving as she decided to turn professional.
Cara Dayanan led EAC with 16 points, while Jing Alimen added 15. Jaja Villena, who played her last game as a Lady General, had 12 points, while Alex Razonable also chipped in 12 points as EAC capped the tourney with a 4-14 record.
Assistant coach Sid Gerella said EAC's campaign has already improved compared to last season where they went winless.
"Maganda ang performance ng women's, kailangan lang siguro namin dagdagan pa ang efforts namin and experience pa. For sure, kaya namin maging mas competitive pa. Although galing kami sa zero, good pa rin ang performance kasi hindi kami naka-zero this year and nakalaban kami sa top tier teams kaya good pa rin ang ending ng season," Gerella said as he called the shots with head coach Rod Palmera out due to an emergency.

FilOil: Benilde averts collapse in one-point escape vs. EAC, nears top seed
De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde nearly wasted a double-digit lead, but hung tough to escape Emilio Aguinaldo College, 86-85, in the 18th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Sunday. Without Allen Liwag and Justine Sanchez, veteran guard Tony Ynot led the way with 17 points laced with two rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block to help the Blazers pull off the victory despite almost squandering a huge 17-point cushion. Jhomel Ancheta sent Benilde to a 72-55 lead late in the third period, but the Generals turned to EJ Castillo in the fightback that saw them pulling within the in the fourth, 81-84, thanks to four straight baskets from the rookie sensation. Castillo followed those up with another stepback jumper before Jacob Shanoda sank a pair of free throws off a foul he drew from Raffy Celis to further trim the gap to a solitary point, 85-86, with 53 seconds left in the game. EAC had a chance to win it, but Nico Quinal missed a last-gasp three-pointer attempt as Benilde held on to take its second win in a row. Benilde improved to 7-1 and could secure the top seed if it wins over Lyceum of the Philippines University (1-7) on Wednesday and if Colegio de San Juan de Letran (7-1) loses to San Beda University (4-4). In another game, graduating Yukien Andrada displayed his veteran presence in leading San Beda to a 76-70 win against the struggling Lyceum. The 6-foot-5 forward almost had a double-double outing of 21 points and nine rebounds while also getting ample help from Agjanti Miller and Nygel Gonzales. New recruit Miller posted a double-double performance of 14 points and 12 rebounds while Gonzales chipped in 13 markers, seven assists, and two boards as the also-ran Red Lions look to end their campaign on a high note. Andrew Estrella is new Letran Squires head coach
NCAA Andrew Estrella is the new head coach of the Colegio de San Juan Letran Squires. Estrella will replace Willie Miller who steered the Squires to a Final Four run in NCAA Season 100. Estrella handled the UE Junior Warriors U16 team in the past two seasons and delivered the title in UAAP U16 boys basketball last December. "I'm incredibly thankful to Letran and Strong Group Athletics for this chance to lead the Squires," Estrella said in a statement. "Thank you to Fr. Raymond [Jose, OP], Fr. Vic, Boss Frank, and Boss Jacob for believing in me. I'll give my best and make sure not to let anyone down." Despite his new responsibility as a head coach, Estrella will still be serving in the University of the East. "I may have a new home with Letran, but there are no goodbyes," he said. "I'll still be consulting for UE. UE helped shape who I am as a coach, and I'll always be grateful for that." Clint Escamis is CPC Basketball Player of the Year; Carl Berdal, Zam Nolasco take top volleyball honors for NCAA
Mapua University's Clint Escamis was named by the Collegiate Press Corps as its Basketball Player of the Year which will be given on Monday in its annual Awards Night. Escamis, the Season 99 Most Valuable Player, led the Cardinals to its first title since 1991 in NCAA Season 100. By the end of the elimination round, Escamis had averages of 15.44 points, 3.61 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.89 steals per game and was among the league's leaders in scoring, total assists, and steals in the past season. In the finals where the Cardinals swept De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, Escamis posted averages of 24.5 points, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals to be named as Finals MVP. Carl Berdal of Arellano University and Benilde's Zam Nolasco, meanwhile, were named as the Collegiate Press Corps NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year, respectively. Berdal was named the Finals MVP of the Season 100 men's volleyball tournament as he led the Chiefs to its first title in men's volleyball. The Arellano veteran was among the league's top scorers at 11th place with a total of 255 points, a leader in spiking with 44.19% success rate, and second overall in receiving with an efficiency rate of 56.84%. Nolasco, on the other hand, was crucial in the Lady Blazers' campaign to reach their fourth straight title. The third year middle blocker was 12th overall in scoring with 211 points, and number one in blocking with 0.73 average by set, which earned her a spot in the league's Best Middle Blockers this season. In Game 1 of the finals, Nolasco paced Benilde with 21 points, eight from blocks, as the Lady Blazers eventually won the title.
