Bengaluru plans 300 km of roads along stormwater drains to combat traffic: Report
While visiting the area for an inspection, Rao emphasized that necessary land for the project could be secured using the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) system — a policy tool allowing builders to obtain additional development rights elsewhere in exchange for relinquishing land for public projects. He also examined nearby junctions and directed teams on-site to carry out road repairs to ensure smoother vehicular flow in the neighbourhood, the report stated.

Adding to this initiative, BS Prahallad, who serves as the Technical Director for Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-SMILE), spoke about a wider initiative under the 'Sanchara Yukta' programme. The plan aims to build 300 kilometres of roadways along stormwater drain buffer areas throughout the city. Within this broader framework, RR Nagar is set to receive around 70 kilometres of new roads, the report said.

Prahallad noted that constructing roads in these spaces — often underutilized — is expected to significantly improve access between key localities and help alleviate the growing problem of urban gridlock. The strategy aims to make effective use of available land while keeping city infrastructure resilient, particularly during heavy monsoon seasons when stormwater drains are most active, the report noted.

Karnataka high court tells govt to file status reporton pending Sakala applications
Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court has directed the state govt to file a status report on the number of pending applications under the Sakala Services Act. The date on which such applications were filed and the estimated time required for their disposal also need to be indicated in the report, which should be filed in four weeks, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Joshi observed in their order. The next hearing will take place on Oct 29. The court was hearing a PIL filed by S Gowri Shankar, a resident of Bengaluru. APSRTC unions forming JAC to oppose proposed construction of mall on RTC land
Leaders of Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APSRTC) Employees Union on Friday staged a demonstration at Governorpet Depots-1 and 2 in protest against the government decision to construct a shopping mall at the place. Addressing a meet, the Employees Union's Vijayawada zone secretary Y. Srinivasa Rao said the 4.15 acres, which included the Governorpet 1 and 2 depots, the Old Bus Stand and a municipal park developed on half acre of this site, was handed over to UAE-based Lulu Group International for construction of a shopping mall. He called on the RTC workers to oppose G.O. No. 137 released to this effect by the government. Mr. Rao said the APSRTC management had acquired the land where the Governorpet depots-1 and 2 are located now in 1959 after paying ₹16 per square yard, amounting to ₹4.06 lakh. He said transfer of this valuable land to a private entity by the government was condemnable. He called upon all the unions in the RTC, including National Mazdoor Unity Association (NMUA) and Staff and Workers Federation (SWF), to unite under the Joint Action Committee being formed to fight collectively and protect RTC assets.

Govt plans shrimp rebranding to target domestic consumers
Vijayawada: In a proactive move to protect state's vital aqua sector, the state govt is planning a major rebranding campaign for shrimp-based products to increase domestic consumption and reduce reliance on exports — especially to the United States, which recently announced a 25% tariff on Indian seafood imports. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Shrimp, the crown jewel of AP's aqua exports, faces an uncertain future with the impending US tariff. With the state contributing significantly to India's shrimp production and export volume, the policy shift from Washington has triggered a strategic rethink. Financial expert C Kutumba Rao, who is also the vice-chairman of Swarnandhra P4 initiative, said the tariff announcement served as a wake-up call. "Our dependency on a single export market has become a risk. This is the right time to pivot. By increasing local consumption of shrimp through branding and awareness, we can safeguard the livelihood of lakhs of aqua farmers," he said. The state's long-term plan aims to promote locally produced shrimp and related seafood through special branding, marketing campaigns, and awareness drives about the health benefits of regular seafood consumption. The fisheries dept, along with industry leaders and export agencies, will spearhead this effort. Experts believe that even a modest 1-2% rise in domestic shrimp consumption could help the aqua sector survive, even if the US reduces imports by 40%. The new strategy borrows inspiration from the National Egg Coordination Committee's earlier success, which transformed eggs into a household staple across India through clever branding and public outreach. "The success of the egg campaign shows that Indian consumers respond well to health-driven food branding. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Shrimp has similar potential — it is rich in protein, easy to cook, and affordable. We want to see it on more Indian plates," added Rao. The branding campaign is expected to be launched in the coming months with recipe promotions, seafood festivals, nutritional campaigns, and inclusion of shrimp-based dishes in public meal programs and hotels.
