
Foldable phones surge in popularity as Thai users seek all-in-one convenience
Since their commercial debut in 2019, foldable smartphones have evolved from niche gadgets into mainstream contenders. Samsung reports that Thai users now view models like the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip as practical and stylish alternatives to traditional smartphones, thanks to their flexible form factors and multitasking capabilities.
The Galaxy Z Fold, known for its tablet-like display, has historically found favour among male buyers, who account for 60% of its user base. However, the brand has seen a rise in female interest following the introduction of slimmer designs and lighter colour options such as pink.
Meanwhile, the clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip continues to attract younger female professionals, who appreciate its compact size and quick charging during busy office hours. Once dominated by women, the Flip has seen a growing male user base—rising from just 15% in early generations to 21% by the Z Flip 4—thanks to improved portability and a sleeker design.
Samsung has also noted a generational shift, with Gen Z gravitating toward foldables for their discreet displays and enhanced privacy. This demographic trend reflects growing concerns over screen visibility in public spaces and digital intrusion.
Interestingly, the replacement cycle for foldable phones in Thailand averages around 2.3 years, notably shorter than the three-to-five-year cycle typical of conventional handsets. Analysts say this is likely influenced by rapid product development and users' appetite for cutting-edge features.
Looking ahead, industry watchers expect future foldables to integrate artificial intelligence for better camera capabilities, health monitoring tools and productivity enhancements.

The Thai Coconut Industry Group has taken a decisive step to restore international confidence and protect local livelihoods by partnering with the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) to address long-standing concerns about the historical use of monkey labour in coconut harvesting. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for Thailand's agricultural sector, underlining a strong commitment to ethical practices and animal welfare. Thailand, one of the world's leading coconut exporters, generates over 25 billion baht annually from coconut products and supports more than 300,000 farming households. However, the industry has come under increasing global scrutiny due to reports of monkeys being trained to climb trees and harvest coconuts—practices condemned by animal rights groups and ethical consumers. The backlash has prompted threats and actual boycotts from major retailers in Europe and North America, costing the country an estimated 2 billion baht annually. Industry-Wide Reform to Rebuild Trust Recognising the urgency of the issue, key producers—Asiatic Agro Industry, Suree Interfoods, Thai Coconut Public Company Limited, and Theppadungporn Coconut—formed the Thai Coconut Industry Group to champion ethical sourcing and sustainability. Their goal is to maintain Thailand's competitiveness while eliminating practices inconsistent with global expectations. A milestone in this effort came on 27 March 2025, when the Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WFFT—the first formal, industry-wide commitment to ending monkey labour. The agreement includes financial backing for the long-term care of monkeys previously used in coconut farming. The Group is also actively advocating for legislative reforms that would outlaw the practice nationwide. Modernisation and Sustainable Harvesting Beyond animal welfare, the Group is advancing a long-term shift towards modern and sustainable harvesting methods. These include cultivating hybrid and dwarf coconut varieties that are easier to harvest without animal assistance, and investing in mechanised harvesting technology to boost efficiency and eliminate the need for outdated methods. "Our members already reject monkey labour, use traceability systems, and support ethical farming," the Group stated. "This transition is essential—not only for animal welfare but to secure a sustainable future for the industry." Global Support and Government Action The initiative has gained momentum with backing from major international firms such as McCormick & Company and Merit Food Products, which have pledged support for rescued monkey care programmes. Veterinary experts from Mahidol University are also contributing to the effort, ensuring best practices in animal welfare. WFFT founder Edwin Wiek welcomed the partnership, saying, "This cooperation is a turning point. Together, we can establish a new global benchmark for ethical coconut sourcing." The Group is also calling on the Thai government to introduce and enforce legislation explicitly banning monkey labour. Strong traceability systems are being rolled out to certify that all exported coconut products comply with ethical standards—reassuring international buyers of the industry's transparency and accountability. Workers sought for Japan scheme
Japan has begun recruiting workers for the "IM Japan" programme with free applications, training, and career support, says government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap. The drive, a technical intern training programme for Thai workers, is being conducted in collaboration with Thailand's Department of Employment. The programme offers free application, four months of Japanese language training (with free meals and accommodation), and a career-starting grant of ¥600,000 (134,450 baht) upon completion. Mr Jirayu said the recruitment is part of Thailand's ongoing cooperation with the IM Japan programme, which aims to upskill Thai workers and expose them to modern Japanese technology and practices. For male applicants, the recruitment comes in two phases: the first round from July 1–31 and the second round from Aug 1–31. For female applicants, recruitment runs from July 21–27.

Thai corporates' high leverage a concern
Several major Thai corporate borrowers have high leverage relative to their Asia-Pacific peers following a long period of large debt-funded investments and weak growth, according to Fitch Ratings. The average ratio of net debt to Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation) for Thailand's 10 largest bond issuers was 3.8 times at the end of 2024, according to Obboon Thirachit, senior director for corporate ratings at Fitch Ratings (Thailand). That rate was much higher than 2.1 times for all Fitch-rated Thai corporates and 2.4 times for Asia-Pacific peers, Mr Obboon told the recent Thailand Corporate Credit Outlook event in Bangkok. While PTT Group had the lowest leverage of 1.6 times, the other largest issuers had leverage ratios ranging from 3.8 to 15 times, he said. Any ratio greater than 3 is considered worthy of close monitoring. Prolonged high leverage and consistent negative free cash flow mean companies are more reliant on debt funding than on cash flows derived from operations, according to Fitch. This could result in a vulnerable capital structure that faces higher refinancing and liquidity risks, particularly during periods of market volatility. Weak corporate governance, such as inadequate board oversight, opaque group structures and poor disclosure, are other red flags of financial deterioration, noted Fitch. Resilient sectors, such as telecoms, should continue to benefit from less competition. Infrastructure development should also support earnings growth in the cement and building materials sector, said the ratings firm. The earnings of packaging companies should remain strong, supported by robust demand. However, petrochemical companies continue to face earnings pressure due to a prolonged downturn caused by weak demand and increased supply. Power companies are increasing investments and acquisitions as they seek to transition to renewable energy sources, which could worsen their already-high financial leverage. Fitch expects earnings for oil and gas companies to moderate from a high base alongside an expected softening in oil and gas prices, although earnings should remain robust.
