Teddy Bridgewater won't coach HS alma mater, reportedly planning another NFL comeback

Teddy Bridgewater will not coach high school football this coming season. Instead, the veteran quarterback is eyeing an NFL return, according to The Portal 305 and The Palm Beach Post. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Bridgewater, 32, led the Miami Northwestern Bulls to the Florida Class 3A state championship last season and then unretired to join the Detroit Lions. He served as Jared Goff's backup and did not appear in a regular-season game. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Bridgewater is expected to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday and sign there. Last month, Bridgewater was suspended from Miami Northwestern after providing impermissible benefits to his players. The suspension stemmed from a post Bridgewater put on Facebook on July 7 where he revealed he covered Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players last season. He asked fans to donate and cover those expenses this year so they wouldn't have to come directly from his pocket. That drew the attention of the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). An official with the FHSAA, Kelvin Richardson, told Rivals those allegations were sent to Miami Northwestern and that the FHSAA are working to gain more information. Despite the ban, Bridgewater said he was not going anywhere and would "volunteer from the bleachers" like he'd done in the past. Bridgewater played nine NFL seasons with six teams before retiring after 2023 season, which he spent with the Lions. He threw for 15,120 yards and 75 touchdowns in 79 career games after being a first-round pick out of Louisville in 2014.

Isaac TeSlaa film room: Breaking down the Lions rookie WR's preseason debut game

It's always hard to gauge what a player can really do after just one preseason game. For the most part, you shouldn't overreact too much but through the Detroit Lions lone preseason game up to this point of the summer, there's been some encouraging development for a number of their players. One of those players is rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa. In the Hall of Fame loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last week, TeSlaa was one of the top performers on the offensive side of the football for the Lions. He finished the game with two receptions for 46 yards on three targets. He did all this while only playing 32 offensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). Throughout the summer, we've seen TeSlaa stack good days on top of each other. That has continued as of this writing. For now, let's dive into the film to review how the rookie wide receiver did in his first career NFL action. Starting with the first reception we saw from TeSlaa in the Hall of Fame game, we go to the play above. One of the key takeaways I took from this game is how much the Lions ran plays out of their '12' personnel (one running back and two tight ends). That may end up changing if Zach Horton (#40) ends up making the 53-man roster but moves to fullback. That said, let's focus on Isaac TeSlaa (#18) and how he's aligned at the top of the screen. The Lions run a cool hi-lo concept on a bootleg pass with the offensive line sliding to the right. Spilling out from under the offensive line is TE Shane Zylstra (#84) to the flats. Running deeper downfield and across it is TeSlaa. Lions QB Kyle Allen (#8) quickly sees TeSlaa, who glides with ease. The quick and fluid movement is impressive by the rookie wide receiver. It's a big first down that was one of the better offensive plays from the Lions on the night. Moving to the next play, we'll see the Lions run only two routes downfield until a tight end check-releases. Focusing on the bottom of the screen, you'll see TeSlaa (#18) faced with off-man coverage from the Chargers. With the outside leverage from the cornerback, TeSlaa explodes to the middle of the field on a dig route. There's a chance that this is an option route (vertical/curl/dig) for the rookie wide receiver, but I digress. As the route continues to develop, quarterback Kyle Allen (#8) begins to extend beyond the pocket. Once TeSlaa gets past the safety down in the box, Allen fires it to the rookie wide receiver. As he secures the ball away from his frame, he turns upfield to gain some additional yardage for the first down. It's been an eventful 4 months for TeSlaa. First, he was drafted by his hometown team in the 3rd round of the 2025 NFL Draft, and he's put together a strong summer camp. At this point, it wouldn't be surprising if we see the rookie receiver carve out a bigger role on the Lions' offense. On the Lions 'Inside the Den' YouTube series, it was revealed that the Lions may have bigger plans for him. Possibly even more impressive is that the Lions scouting department has been watching TeSlaa since his days at Hillsdale College. As a player, he was described as a "...natural hands catcher..." and that "he's everything that we look for in this culture. Tough, competitive, athlete.' Highlights of his blocking, run-after-catch ability and athleticism really stood out in the video. It may be tough for TeSlaa to take targets away from Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta, but he could develop into a productive pass catcher. Especially if the sluggish start from Tim Patrick continues into the regular season. We'll see how the preseason goes the rest of the way, but the rookie from Hudsonville, Michigan, is off to a good start.

Falcons rookie Walker returns from minor injury and hopes to play in preseason opener against Lions

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — After missing much of the first week of training camp with a minor hamstring injury, Atlanta Falcons first-round pick Jalon Walker returned to practice on Monday. Walker said he hopes to play in Friday night's first preseason game against the Detroit Lions. 'I feel good,' Walker said. 'I'm feeling so happy to be back out here. Happy for the week. It's a big week of this first preseason game and excited to get things going.' The Falcons selected Walker from Georgia with the No. 15 overall pick in the draft. Walker won the 2024 Butkus Award as the nation's best linebacker and has the potential to play a hybrid role in the NFL as a linebacker and edge rusher. For now, the Falcons want Walker to focus on edge rusher but plan to utilize his versatility. Coach Raheem Morris said Monday the opportunities at linebacker will come 'pretty quickly, you know, as soon as he gets more comfortable out there moving around.' Morris said Walker (6-2, 245) is 'already starting to pick some of those things up, cross training on some of those things already. He's very smart, very sharp, very detailed guy. So nothing you worry about from that standpoint. But I just want to give him a chance to be comfortable doing something first, see that happen, come to life.' Morris said the Falcons were careful to protect Walker from aggravating the injury last week even though the rookie was impatient to join his teammates. The caution continued on Monday as Walker's exposure to practice was limited. After drafting Walker, the Falcons traded with the Los Angeles Rams to add Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. at No. 26. Morris said starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and backup Kirk Cousins will not play in the preseason opener against Detroit. Easton Stick and Emory Jones will share the snaps. Penix said he might be considered for preseason games if not for his starts in the final three games of his 2024 rookie season. 'He feels confident in what I can do on game day,' said Penix of Morris. 'So he didn't feel like I needed to play this week. I'm going to be ready Week 1.' Morris said other decisions will be made following the team's scrimmage on Wednesday. Morris lined up as a defensive back against wide receiver Drake London during practice. The coach didn't fare well, as he was pushed back and landed on his backside . Penix, who threw the pass to London on the play, paused when asked about Morris as a player. 'He's a coach now,' Penix said with a smile. 'He's got to leave the DB stuff back from when he was playing.' Pearce continued to build on his reputation for aggressive play by landing in another practice scuffle, this time with offensive lineman Tyrone Wheatley Jr. The rookie had encounters with right tackle Kaleb McGary and right guard Matthew Bergeron last week. 'It's just the competitor in him,' said Walker of Pearce. 'You get after it. And like I said, we've got that one speed and once we click it on, it's on.' Asked about Pearce's early impact in practice, Penix said 'I notice his love for the game. He works extremely hard each and every day. ... Whatever happens after the play, we definitely want to clean that stuff up. But at the same time he's a competitor and he wants to compete at a high level. That's what he does each and every day and that's what we appreciate and that's what we're going to love come game day.' McGary agreed to a two-year, $30 million extension, according to his agent, Collin Roberts. The deal was first reported by ESPN. McGary, a first-round pick in 2019, has started 92 of 93 games in six seasons. ___ AP NFL:
