Under the helm of Hollywood icon Ridley Scott, known for masterpieces like Alien and Gladiator, the 2007 film American Gangster is set to depart Amazon Prime, prompting fans to shower it with accolades. This biographical crime thriller, directed by Scott, delves into the real-life story of notorious drug kingpin Frank Lucas.
The movie is rooted in Lucas's illicit exploits, specifically his cunning strategy of smuggling heroin into the U.S. during the Vietnam War era.
The infamous gangster leveraged American military planes returning from the war to transport his narcotics, a scheme that continued until his eventual capture and imprisonment. Notoriously, Lucas once bragged about concealing heroin within the coffins of deceased servicemen - a shocking tactic that ultimately led to his 70-year prison sentence.
While the film takes creative liberties with certain aspects of Lucas's life, it vividly portrays the harsh realities of mob life in 1970s America. According to a Rotten Tomatoes review: "The pacing starts slow but keeps you hooked. It captures the grime and glamour of the '70s, the mobsters who ran the streets, and the few "untouchable" cops resistant to the corruption running deep in drug enforcement.
"At its core, it's an action-packed drama about two men on opposite sides of the law: one building an empire through crime, the other a determined detective fighting against the odds to take him down", reports Surrey Live.
Echoing this sentiment, another viewer shared: "Similar ground to the tale of the rise and fall of a gangster; however, this is one of the best to do it, and Denzel's performance is very good.

"The music choices, the settings and the story of Lucas caught my fancy. It may not pack the same level of violence and tension as other gangster films, but it's without doubt an impressive movie," another fan added.
Denzel Washington stars as the infamous mobster in the flick, with Russell Crowe playing against him, and audiences are praising Washington's convincing act. His stellar performance earned him plaudits and nominations from the Golden Globe Awards to the BAFTAs, while the film itself snagged nods in several categories.
One review raved: "Best Denzel Washington movie by a country mile. Outstanding performance. Chuck in Russell Crowe at the very top of his game. Finally, a brilliant true story. Mix it all together and bingo, a CLASSIC ! ! ! ! !".
Meanwhile, another viewer remarked: "Outstanding performances by Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe put this film among the top films of this genre."
More than 15 years after its release, the movie still boasts a solid 81% aggregate score on the review site.
Film enthusiasts will be stunned to discover that it is due to depart from Amazon Prime on June 3, leaving those who haven't seen it yet with only a few days remaining.

ITV shares soar as studios business proves a hit

ITV shares rose sharply on Thursday after the broadcaster's studios arm helped drive a better-than-expected first half performance. The group's studios business, which is responsible for shows like Amazon Prime's The Devil's Hour and Netflix's Run Away, saw revenue growth of 3 per cent in the first six months of the year. ITV told shareholders the division's profits are set to rise in the second half due to the phasing of higher-margin sales, including Rivals season 2 for Disney+ and the third season of The Reluctant Traveller for Apple TV. Studios produces in 12 countries, with over 60 production companies around the world It helped offset a 7 per cent decline in total advertising revenue for the period, owing to a tough comparison with last year's men's UEFA European Football Championship. The decline was better than forecasts of an 8 per cent fall. ITVX sees spike in streaming hours Meanwhile, streaming platform ITVX maintained bumper growth, with viewing hours rising 15 per cent. ITV also said it found an additional £15million of permanent non-content cost savings, taking its 2025 streamlining tally to £45 million, and the group expects to spend slightly less than it had previously indicated on content this year. 'We are on track to deliver our 2026 key financial targets, with sustained good growth in ITV Studios and ITVX coupled with strategic cost management as we reshape our cost base,' boss Carolyn McCall said. ITV shares were 8.4 per cent to 84p in early trading, taking 2025 gains to 15.1 per cent. Aarin Chiekrie, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said ITV's near-term outlook for ad revenues 'remains soft' but performance should improve as the comparisons with last year's Euro's fade. He added: 'Given the low valuation of ITV and the quality of the Studios business, there's been plenty of speculation about takeover bids in recent times. 'That's likely to remain the case in the near term, and the main driver of the share price until other parts of the business improve performance. 'But given the structural decline in broadcasting advertising, it's not likely to be a swift turnaround.'

Tens of thousands of fans — many in costumes — will descend Thursday on Comic-Con International, the four day pop culture spectacle that will feature updates on the new 'Predator' movie, 'Alien' series and a special appearance by George Lucas. Just don't expect major news about the future of Marvel 's movie slate or what's next for the hit relaunch of DC's high-flying 'Superman' franchise. Both studios are sitting out Comic-Con 2025, as far as their film slates go. An estimated 135,000 people will attend the convention, which will greet Lucas on Sunday for his first Comic-Con appearance. The 'Star Wars' creator will discuss his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art that will open next year in Los Angeles. Fans of the 'Alien' and 'Predator' franchises will have plenty to cheer. Elle Fanning, star of 'Predator: Badlands,' will discuss the film at Comic-Con's massive Hall H this week. FX will also bring the stars and creators of 'Alien: Earth,' a series that will unleash the Xenomorph species on Earth next month. 'Alien: Earth' will be one of the projects that brings a massive interactive experience to San Diego, with a replica of spacecraft from the series. Amazon Prime adds 'addictive' TV drama that viewers can't stop watching

If you're looking for your summer TV binge, then Amazon Prime has the perfect show for you. Yes, why not escape the bad weather by taking a trip to the bright lights of Beverly Hills, because all five seasons of 90210 are now available to stream on Prime Video. Based on the classic 90s series, Beverly Hills, 90210, this pulpy drama tracks the trials and tribulations of Annie (Shenae Grimes) and Dixon (Tristan Wilds) Wilson, who recently moved to the luxurious postcode with their parents. As the siblings head to their prestigious new school, West Beverly Hills High, the pair quickly befriend a group of uber-rich teens and shenanigans ensue. While it would be generous to call the show beloved – a quick glimpse at it 43% on Rotten Tomatoes proves that – the show maintained a dedicated fanbase. Indeed, its trashy plots and sensationalised stories meant 90210 was many a critic's guilty pleasure back in the day. Brian Tallerico of wrote as much in his review. 'Much to my surprise, I found 90210 to be a satisfactory guilty pleasure,' he claimed. 'A sun-soaked diversion that's a great alternative for when you want to zone out after a long day at work or school.' Alan Sepinwall was also enthusiastic about the show, writing in his Newark Star-Ledger review that it was 'remarkably faithful in tone and spirit to the original adventures of Brandon, Brenda, Scott Scanlon and company.' Of course, general audiences were much kinder to the show than critics. On a rather glowing Google review, Vanisha Arjune claimed the show was addictive. 'This show is so amazing,' she wrote. 'I am literally addicted, I can't stop watching. When I first started watching, I wasn't sure how it would go, but now I don't regret it.' More Trending Ace Lezotte felt similarly, awarding the series five stars and writing, 'love this one of my fave series binged it so many times.' Nimue Hoffmeester wrote perhaps the most glowing review, claiming '90210 is one of those shows – you know, the ones you can watch over and over and over again, without growing to dislike it.' 'I recommended the show to all my friends and it would constantly be playing in the background while I studied,' they continued. I hate to admit it – I am obsessed.'
