Masuiyama, who reached the rank of ozeki and also made a name for himself in the entertainment world, died on June 15 at age 76.
The era when Masuiyama, whose real name was Noboru Sawada, was active featured the popular yokozuna pair of Kitanoumi and Wajima. Although Masuiyama held the ozeki rank for a relatively short seven tournaments, he earned his share of the spotlight with a larger-than-life presence that sparkled in the ring.
The name Masuiyama brings to mind images of his wide arsenal of flamboyant techniques. Among them, his impressive use of his legs for inner and outer trips was second to none, and this caused such problems for so many unwitting opponents.
It was at the 1980 New Year Tournament where Masuiyama earned his promotion to ozeki. His use of an outer leg trip to topple yokozuna Wajima became a major factor in the decision to elevate him in rank. He finished the tournament with a 12-3 record and was awarded a third consecutive Technique Prize.
Masuiyama, who never exceeded 120 kilograms at the time, said he honed the techniques by carefully studying timing and positioning when targeting his opponents' legs. This display of talent impressed even the most discerning sumo connoisseurs.
One thing that can't be left out of any conversation about Masuiyama was his many talents outside of sumo. He not only inherited his ring name from his father (the original ozeki Masuiyama), but also his top-notch painting skills. So exceptional were he and his father that their works were selected for the prestigious Nika Art Exhibition.
It also goes without saying that after leaving the Japan Sumo Association upon reaching the mandatory retirement age, Masuiyama found widespread success in a full-time career as a professional pop singer.
There have been many sumo wrestlers who were good singers, with some even releasing records or showing their vocal skills on music TV programs. But Masuiyama's voice was in a league of its own.
Even while he was still an active wrestler, he released a number of pop records that sold millions of copies, including 'Sonna Yuko ni Horemashita' (I fell in love with Yuko the way she is) and 'Sonna onna no Hitorigoto' (That woman's monologue).
As he attracted a lot of attention for doing double duty as a sumo wrestler and singer, the sumo association put its foot down and demanded that he focus solely on his real job of sumo. That mainly led him to put his singing career on hold while he remained in the association.
A multi-talented individual who transcended the boundaries of the top level of sumo: that was Masuiyama. My feeling now is that it is unlikely we will ever see another wrestler like him.

As you can see, this burger is no joke, with not four but FIVE beef patties ready to take you down to pain town. We're no strangers to pain when it comes to food challenges so we were primed and ready to take this burger on when it was released on 11 June, ordering it as part of as a set with fries and a drink. ▼ Every Baby Body Burger comes with a free sticker while stocks last. From the side, the burger looked enormous — it was as if it was shaking with the same powerful presence of a yokozuna, the highest-ranking class of sumo wrestler, about to enter the ring. Unfurling the wrapping revealed an outrageously over-the-top burger that made us tremble in fear. This baby weighs in at 668 grams (23.6 ounces), with a total kilocalorie count of 1,876, making it a fearsome warrior. ▼ Definitely a yokozuna-class burger. Before even tasting it, the sheer height of the burger made us feel like our jaw might dislocate. As we cowered in fear at the look of it, the burger seemed entirely confident, standing tall with a sturdy stance, as if urging us in to take a swipe at it. Nipping in for a bite, we quickly moved away to discover that the star of the show is the flame-grilled beef patties — it's shamelessly all about the meat, with the bacon and cheese acting as mere junior members to the team. The slightly tangy aurora sauce throws a few moves, enhancing the flavor of the meat, but the seasoning isn't too intense. If anything, it acts as a gentle accompaniment that lets you savour the meat in its purest form. Like a seasoned yokozuna, there was no need to pull any tricks or dodges here — it was all about clashing straight on. Bite after bite, we met the meat wall with childlike glee, feeling ourselves getting stronger as the Baby Body got smaller. By the end of it all, we were full to the brim and in need of a lie-down, with a strange urge to hold the 'I Did It' sticker high above our heads like a trophy. Needless to say, this is a super voluminous burger, so if you're going to step into the ring with it, you'll want to do so with an empty stomach. It's a heavyweight champion of a burger with all the dignity of a Yokozuna, and it's a bout you'll remember forever…much like Crown the One Pounder, which still gives us post-cheese nightmares to this day. Burger King Japan releasing official Japan Sumo Association burger
' Yokozuna-class' burger is for those with very big appetites. Burger King Japan likes to get creative with its burger designs and theming. Within the past year, for example, we've seen them release both a Pickelball Burger and a Kyoto Whopper. Now, though, Burger King Japan is combining those inspirations of competitive sports and Japanese culture with the creation of a sumo burger. To commemorate its status as a new sponsor of the Japan Sumo Association, the organization which oversees professional sumo wrestling in Japan, Burger King is serving up a new sandwich, which it calls the Baby Body Burger. Rather than being for infants, though, the target market here is clearly adults with sumo-sized appetites, and as the official burger of the Japan Sumo Association, Burger King calls it 'a yokozuna-class jumbo-size burger.' In between those buns are no fewer than five all-beef patties, interspersed with four slices of cheddar cheese and topped with bacon, sliced tomato, lettuce, and white wine vinegar pickles. There's no shortage of sauce, either, with aurora sauce, creamy mayonnaise sauce, ketchup, and mustard all throwing their weight around too. The Baby Body Burger tips the scales at 668 grams, which converts to 23.6 ounces, or nearly one and a half pounds, in weight. If you're curious as to how it might affect your own mass, the burger has 1,876 calories, so a light breakfast is advisable if you're planning on picking one up for lunch. The Baby Body Burger goes on sale July 11, two days before the start of the summer sumo tournament in Nagoya, so it's possible we'll see more sumo-themed Burger King promotions as we get closer to the start of the bouts. For now, though, the sandwich will be offered at Burger King branches across Japan for a limited time, and while supplies last it comes with a sticker bearing the name of the Japan Sumo Association written in kanji characters inside an illustration of a tsuna, the braided belt worn by yokozuna, wrestlers who have achieved the sport's highest possible champion ranking. The Baby Body Burger is priced at 2,590 yen (US$18) as an a la carte item or, if you think it's not going to be quite enough to fill you up, 2,890 yen as part of a set that includes a small order of fries and a medium drink.
