AIADMK to protest demanding immediate opening of Palayamkottai Market inaugurated by Stalin in February
According to Thatchai N. Ganesa Raja, AIADMK's Tirunelveli district secretary, the 60-year-old market was rebuilt with 439 shops, cold storage and parking facility in the basement to generate the whopping revenue of ₹2.08 crore per annum to the Corporation. Even though this market was inaugurated by Mr. Stalin five months ago, the market still remains closed due to 'rampant corruption' in allotting the shops to the traders.
'While the traders, who had their shops in this market, demand preference in the allotment of shops, the Corporation says the shops would be assigned to those who are prepared to pay the rent fixed by the urban civic body. And, cases were filed by a few traders in the court that stalled the opening of the market. Though this interim stay has been vacated, the Corporation is in no mood to allot the shops through public auction in fair and transparent manner to the waiting applicants. So, we, in support of the waiting traders, have decided to protest demanding the immediate opening of the Palayamkottai Gandhi Market,' said Mr. Ganesa Raja.
He also said the party would also organise a series of agitations if the 'Amma Unvagavam' within the Tirunelveli Corporation were not maintained well to serve quality food to the poor.
'The AIADMK funded the maintenance and operation of the 'Amma Unvagagam' during the COVID-induced lockdown. We gave the money for serving food to the poor during the pandemic. Now, the Corporation is allowing these eateries to die as it was the scheme initiated by Amma (late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa). We won't allow it to happen. If the Corporation still refuses to maintain these eateries well, the urban local body will face intense protest by the AIADMK,' Mr. Ganesa Raja warned.

India consumes 800–850 tonnes of gold annually, with nearly 60% of this demand coming from rural areas, according to IBJA. Since the Russia-Ukraine war, gold prices have surged over 25% in the last year. In response, many jewellers have started offering 9K jewellery to appeal to budget-conscious customers.

Russia Begins Monthly Direct Flights To North Korea Amid Ukraine Conflict
Russia on Sunday began direct commercial flights to North Korea, in a further sign of closer ties with its Asian ally helping its offensive in Ukraine. The first Moscow-Pyongyang flight, operated by Nordwind Airlines, was scheduled to take off at 1600 GMT and land in the North Korean capital some eight hours later, according to the carrier's website. Nordwind Airlines -- a company that used to serve holiday destinations in Europe before the EU imposed a ban on Russian flights -- had tickets priced at 45,000 rubles ($570). Russia's state news agency TASS reported that the first flight going the other way, from Pyongyang to Moscow, would take place on Tuesday. Russia's transport ministry said the route would be serviced once a month. Russia and North Korea restored train links on June 17 after suspending them in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. The two countries have been forging closer military bonds in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying troops and weapons for Russia to use in its military operations in Ukraine. They signed a mutual defence pact last year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea. North Korea confirmed for the first time in April that it had deployed a contingent of its soldiers to the frontline in Ukraine, alongside Russian troops.

PM given a rousing reception in Tiruchi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Tiruchi on Saturday night as part of his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu, was accorded a warm welcome from members of the public and cadres from the BJP and its allies on Sunday morning. As he travelled by car from a private star hotel on Collector's Office Road to the Tiruchi International Airport — a distance of 7.1 km — the Prime Minister waved at enthusiastic onlookers gathered on both sides of the road. Mr. Modi left for the airport from the hotel around 11.15 a.m. and the convoy passed through the Major Saravanan Roundabout, Bharathidasan Road, Head Post Office junction, TVS Tollgate, Subramaniyapuram, and Kottapattu before reaching the airport. Seated in the front, he waved at the public through the windshield. BJP and alliance party workers, including those from the AIADMK and Tamizhar Desam Katchi, assembled at key junctions along the route. The public too, gathered in considerable numbers, many showering flower petals on the convoy. Traditional percussion ensembles and artists dressed as Hindu deities—Shiva, Parvati, Murugan, Krishna, and Rama—added a cultural flavour to the welcome. Three major reception points were set up — at Bharathidasan Road near the Tiruchi Corporation Office, at Subramaniyapuram near the MGR statue, and near the Tiruchi International Airport — where party cadres and the public lined up to greet the Prime Minister. Steel barricades were installed at these key locations to manage crowds and ensure security. Banners, party flags, and placards from the BJP, the AIADMK, and Tamizhar Desam were placed along the medians and sidewalks, from the hotel to the airport. No other vehicles were allowed on this route during the Prime Minister's transit. All shops along the way were temporarily shut as a security measure and were reopened once the convoy passed. Traffic was diverted on alternative routes. Over 1,400 police personnel were deployed to ensure security along the entire stretch. The arrangements were supervised by top district and city police officials. Mr. Modi on returning to the city airport by helicopter from Gangaikonda Cholapuram, left for New Delhi by a special flight.
