Finally, city to get all-weather swimming pool, C&D waste plant soon
Ludhiana: A few much-awaited projects of the civic body are ready for inauguration and will be handed over to the public soon. Work on the all-weather swimming pool and construction and demolition waste plant is complete while the basketball court is near completion. Officials said that it will take another week to complete the remaining work. The construction and demolition (C&D) waste plant set up in Dhandhari was initially conceived under the Smart City Mission but was taken up under the Swachh Bharat Mission due to increase in its cost and change in the structure. The project cost was estimated at Rs 2.69 crore, but the site allocated for the project turned out to be a dumpsite, because of which authorities needed to construct pillars and remove the trash. This led to escalation of the project cost. Finally, the tender was awarded for Rs 7.30 crore, with an additional Rs 2.20 crore spent on machinery, which was purchased under the Smart City Mission. The plant constructed by the civic body will have the capacity to process at least 100 tons of construction waste per day. Officials said that after crushing the waste, the contractor will manufacture multiple products, like tiles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The C&D waste plant is urgently needed in the city, as frequent construction work results in heaps of rubble lying everywhere. The civic body attempted to designate places where people could dispose of waste, but it did not work, and waste can even be seen in green belts. The all weather swimming pool was also a longstanding demand in the city, where residents did not have a place to swim during the winter months. Only a few clubs and private places have all-weather pools. Swimming enthusiasts, especially players, were unable to practise. The all-weather pool has been constructed near Rakh Bagh, adjoining the older MC pool, which remains operational in the summer. The pool has been constructed under the Smart City Mission at a cost of Rs 5.82 crore. It is 4.5 feet deep on one side and 6 feet on the other. The third project is the basketball court in Guru Nanak Stadium, costing Rs 14.38 crore under the Smart City Mission. It will take another week to complete the work. This project has missed several deadlines already and now, two courts are almost ready. MC commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal said, "The swimming pool is ready and if anyone wants to use it, they can go ahead. We have also conducted trial runs of the C&D waste plant, which will start shortly. However, the basketball court will take time. It will also start in some time." Now that the MC has constructed sports infrastructure, including a table tennis court, basketball court, and all-weather swimming pool, officials plan to hand over the projects to private bodies for proper maintenance.

Hubballi faces recurring flood management challenges
Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation seems to have disregarded the lessons from the floods of 2019 in Hubballi, which caused extensive damage to roads and both private and public properties. A survey conducted following the 2019 floods in Hubballi, triggered by heavy rainfall, identified several critical issues: encroachment of nalas, lack of open drainage systems in commercial and residential zones, and clogged nalas. These identical problems have resurfaced now, as the city faces another flood-like situation. Meanwhile, HDMC continues to grapple with flood management issues. Despite the severe flooding in 2019, the essential preventive measures were not implemented effectively. The uncleaned nalas remain a persistent problem, causing waterlogging during heavy rainfall. Most of the residential and commercial areas have been particularly affected due to poor drainage systems. Local residents have expressed concerns about the lack of proper stormwater channels and the slow pace of nala retaining wall construction projects. The commercial areas along Koppikar Road, Dajibanpeth, Station Road, and others face similar challenges with inadequate drainage infrastructure. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The corporation's failure to address encroachments along natural water channels has worsened the situation. Several buildings and temporary structures continue to obstruct the natural flow of water. The absence of proper drainage networks in newly developed areas has added to the problem. The civic body needs to implement a comprehensive flood management plan. This should include regular cleaning of nalas, removal of encroachments, and construction of proper drainage systems. The corporation must also ensure that new developments include adequate drainage infrastructure. Local authorities need to work with urban planners to develop long-term solutions. R Vijay Kumar, Superintending Engineer of HDMC, explained that while the Smart City Mission's green mobility corridor work continues, areas with constructed retaining walls along nalas have remained safe from flooding. However, Old Hubballi regions lacking these protective walls have experienced flooding issues. He noted that they identified the primary flooding causes in Old Hubballi and surrounding areas. Recently, MLA Prasad Abbayya, DC Divya Prabhu, and the HDMC Commissioner advised NHAI officials to remove the low-level bridges at Nekar Nagar, as these structures cause rainwater blockage, leading to flooding in residential and other areas. He further stated that several flood prevention strategies were developed and will be implemented.

Uttar Pradesh govt to invest around ₹325 cr in digital education push
The Uttar Pradesh government is set to invest nearly ₹325 crore in creating a network of smart classrooms across the state to align school education with the growing digital ecosystem. 'We are taking urban education to a new dimension. These smart classrooms are not only connecting students with technology but also preparing them for the future,' said Amrit Abhijat, the department's principal secretary. The classrooms are equipped with interactive digital boards, multimedia content, and high-speed internet to deliver a more immersive and engaging learning experience. The broader aim is to modernise education infrastructure in urban areas, particularly in government schools, while expanding access for students from economically weaker sections. Officials say the initiative has led to a rise in attendance and enrollment in urban government schools. A large share of the completed classrooms have been developed under the Smart City Mission at a sanctioned cost of ₹160 crore. Additional classrooms have been built under other government schemes. Around 190 have been set up through the Kayakalp initiative with an investment of ₹58 crore. The Aspirational Cities Programme has sanctioned 913 classrooms at a cost of ₹30 crore. The CM Abhyudaya Composite School Scheme is supporting the construction of 25 specialised classrooms, while 13 classrooms have been approved under the Vaishvik Nagaroday Yojana. Launched in 2022, the smart classroom campaign has made rapid progress, with over 65 per cent of the approved infrastructure now operational. According to state estimates, the enrollment rate in urban government schools has climbed to nearly 60 per cent — roughly 15 per cent higher than the national average. State officials also report that the use of technology in classrooms has significantly improved student learning outcomes and helped reduce dropout rates.

Lucknow Drives Tier-2 Realty Boom with 48% Sales Growth
India's Tier-2 cities are emerging as powerful growth hubs in real estate, driven by infrastructure upgrades, affordability, and evolving lifestyle demands. Defying a broader slowdown, Lucknow recorded a remarkable 48% jump in property sales value and a 25% increase in residential units sold, according to a PropEquity report. The city's transformation is underpinned by modern infrastructure, private sector responsiveness, and an expanding middle class seeking better urban living. Alongside Lucknow, Western cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Gandhinagar contributed to 79% of units sold and 74% of sales value. Other capitals—Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Goa, and Bhopal—also showed healthy growth, jointly accounting for 30% of total revenue. Lucknow's real estate momentum is fueled by major infrastructure projects such as the Purvanchal Expressway, Outer Ring Road, and the expanding metro network. These efforts, combined with initiatives like AMRUT and Smart City Mission, are reshaping the city's urban fabric and improving its liveability. The city's realty value climbed to ₹1,797 crore with 1,301 units sold, the highest in Tier-2 cities. Developers are seizing this moment, investing in planned urban corridors and premium micro-markets like Gomti Nagar Extension, Shaheed Path, and Raebareli Road. These zones are seeing rapid price appreciation: Gomti Nagar Extension: 1.7× rise in 10 years, projected 1.9× by 2035 Shaheed Path: 2.4× rise in 10 years, projected 3.0× by 2035 Raebareli Road: 3.5× rise in 10 years, projected 3.4× by 2035 Real estate leaders including Mohit Goel (Omaxe Group), Yash Miglani (Migsun Group), and Neeraj Sharma (Escon Infra Realtors) agree that Lucknow is not just growing—it's setting the benchmark for Tier-2 urban development. Infrastructure, lifestyle appeal, and smart planning are transforming it into a long-term investment hotspot. As demand rises for quality housing and infrastructure keeps pace, Lucknow is redefining Tier-2 city potential, offering both end users and investors a future-ready, high-return market.
