Manjeet Singh on the Rise of Tattoo Culture in India: Art, Identity, and a Growing Industry
'Fifteen years ago, tattooing in India was viewed as a foreign concept, or something linked to rebellion,' he reflects. 'Today, it's part of mainstream culture — it's fashion, faith, remembrance, and identity all in one.'
Singh's journey began far from the tattoo needle. Born in 1976, he started as a teenage painter of Bollywood film posters in the 1990s — a craft that demanded scale, realism, and detail. His transition to tattooing was sparked by his exposure to international art and shows like Miami Ink. Entirely self-taught, Singh entered the profession in 2007, blending his fine art background with innovative tattoo techniques. Today, his work is celebrated for its black-and-grey realism, portraiture, and religious symbolism, especially Sikh iconography.
'Young people today are not afraid to express themselves visually,' he says of the cultural shift. 'They see tattoos not just as designs, but as personal narratives. That's a big shift from earlier.'
India's tattoo market is now valued at over ₹300 crore, buoyed by global exposure, social media, and a younger, more expressive generation. Singh credits platforms like Instagram for raising both visibility and standards. 'Earlier, people would come in with little idea of what they wanted. Now, many arrive with research, references, and clear intent.'
His work has gained international recognition, with a tattoo of Salvador Dalí featured in The World Atlas of Tattoos (Yale University Press). Singh has won accolades including Best Portrait Tattoo at India's 2nd International Tattoo Convention and holds a Guinness World Record.
Despite international acclaim, Singh remains grounded in India. 'There's something very rooted about working here. The stories, the beliefs — they're different. And that's what I want to reflect in my work.'
His celebrity clientele spans Punjabi music stars like Himanshi Khurana and Jordan Sandhu to sports icons like Harbhajan Singh. Yet, Singh maintains that the heart of his practice lies in personal storytelling and mentoring younger artists. He regularly conducts workshops on hygiene and ethics in tattooing.
'There's still a long way to go in India when it comes to regulation, safety, and standard training,' he notes. 'But we're in a much better place than we were ten years ago.'
Singh's impact goes beyond ink. Whether it's collecting antique coins or collaborating with regional studios to uplift local talent, his mission is clear: to shape India's tattoo industry with authenticity and purpose. 'India's tattoo story is still being written,' he says. 'And I'm proud to be part of that chapter.'

Earlier in the year, in April, Tom Brady and Tie Domi had both celebrated soccer luminary David Beckham's landmark 50th birthday. Brady had also posted several stories from this exorbitant gathering on his Instagram. One specific photograph, portraying Tom Brady with Domi's father, the former NHL enforcer Tie Domi, alongside Tie's wife Heather, and real estate magnate Jeffrey Soffer with his wife Colleen, caught attention. They were all elegantly attired for the evening's festivities. In the associated caption, Brady blithely acclaimed, 'Hanging with the biggest boss in Vegas, and @max's dad.' Max Domi, a current forward for the Leafs and Tie's son, reacted to this mention by sharing the photo on his own Instagram story, embellished with three laughing emojis. Brady continued to share other images from the celebration, including a shot of him standing with basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal and David Beckham. Supreme Court to hear plea for 'Udaipur Files' release 'in a day or two'
Supreme Court NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Monday told producers of the film 'Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder', screening of which has been stayed by Delhi high court , that it will hear its plea for release of the movie in the theatres "within a day or two". Senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia appealed to a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi for urgent hearing on the special leave petition by Meerut-based producer 'Jani Firefox Media' challenging the high court's July 10 order stalling release of the film despite the censor board clearing its screening with certain cuts. Bhatia said the high court order came on a petition by Maulana Arshad Madani, who claimed the film was an attempt to vilify an entire community, even though the storyline of the movie is based on a true incident of beheading of Kanhaiyalal by two Muslim men in June 2022 for sharing a post on Prophet Mohammad, and that the producers had carried out cuts suggested by CBFC. The high court had disposed of Madani's petition by permitting him to appeal against permission to release the film before Union government. It had said, "Since we are relegating the petitioner to remedy of revision under Section 6 of Cinematograph Act, we direct that till the application for interim relief, if made by the petitioner along with the revision petition under Section 6, is decided by central govt, release of the film shall remain stayed. " The film producer through advocate Pulkit Agarwal cited several SC judgements which had laid down the principle that a film cleared by censor board cannot be stalled from being screened in theatres unless there is an explicit violation which squarely fell within 'reasonable restrictions' on right to free speech specified under Article 19(2) of the Constitution.

Exploring the friendship between Auston Matthews and Justin Bieber as the NHL star supports his surprise ‘Swag' album
Auston Matthews and Justin Bieber's tight bond grows stronger as NHL star celebrates 'Swag' album drop (Getty Images) Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is clearly vibing with Justin Bieber 's latest musical surprise. Following the unexpected drop of Bieber's 21-track album titled Swag, Matthews shared two Instagram stories over the weekend that sent Leafs fans and Beliebers buzzing alike. Auston Matthews responds to Justin Bieber's surprise 'Swag' album In the first story, Auston Matthews posted Bieber's track 'YUKON' from the album, proudly displaying the black-and-white cover art bearing the title SWAG along with a parental advisory label. Tagging the pop star directly, Matthews added a fire heart emoji — a not-so-subtle endorsement from the NHL star. He doubled down on his support in a second story, sharing 'WAY IT IS,' a collaboration between Bieber and rapper Gunna. The Leafs forward kept it short and expressive, simply writing: 'Yep.' While some fans may find the exchange casual, it's yet another chapter in the deep friendship and mutual admiration between Matthews and Bieber. Their bond has long gone beyond Instagram tags and emoji reactions. Bieber, a die-hard Maple Leafs fan, has not only attended countless games but has even collaborated with the team on special jersey designs in past seasons. Just last month, Bieber showed off his Maple Leafs pride in a heartwarming Instagram post featuring his 10-month-old son, Jack Blues Bieber, dressed in a No. 34 Auston Matthews jersey. The Leafs' official account responded with three blue heart emojis, marking a full-circle moment of support between the player and the pop icon. During the Leafs' most recent playoff run, Bieber and his wife Hailey were spotted in VIP seats behind the team's bench in Game 7 against the Florida Panthers. Though the game ended in a devastating 6-1 loss, Bieber posted a tribute that reminded fans of his unwavering support: 'I don't remember a time in my life when I haven't been obsessed with the leafsssss,' he wrote. 'This year we made it farther than we have in so long and I'm happy about that. I can be patient cuz I know this is the team to do it.' Also Read: Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin gear up to challenge another untouchable Wayne Gretzky record in 2025-26 NHL season Even after Canadian rapper Drake jokingly blamed the 'Bieber curse' for the team's playoff exit, it's clear the loyalty between Bieber and the Leafs—especially with Auston Matthews—is as strong as ever. And with Swag on the speakers, the Maple Leafs' locker room just might have found its newest soundtrack.
