With Africa, India seeks not to compete, but to cooperate: PM Modi
While addressing the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament on Wednesday, PM Modi noted that India's development partnership in Africa is worth more than 12 billion dollars. He expressed India's support for Africa's Agenda 2063 Industrialisation and readiness to expand cooperation in defence and security.
PM Modi said, 'In 2018, I had laid out ten principles of our engagement with Africa. Today, I reaffirm India's full commitment to them. They are based on respect, equality, and mutual benefit. We seek not to compete, but to cooperate. Our goal is to build together. Not to take, but to grow together. Our development partnership in Africa is worth over 12 billion dollars. But its real value is in shared growth and shared purpose. We continue to build local skills, create local jobs, and support local innovation.'
'We believe that Africa must not be just a source of raw materials. Africa must lead in value creation and sustainable growth. That is why we fully support Africa's Agenda 2063 for industrialisation. We are ready to expand our cooperation in Defence and Security. India values Africa's role in world affairs. We championed Africa's voice during our G20 presidency. And we proudly welcomed the African Union as a permanent member of the G20,' he added.
PM Modi recalled how India supported Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing vaccines and medicines. He mentioned that India's 'Aarogya Maitri' initiative supports Africa with hospitals, equipment, medicines and training.
'During the pandemic, we stood with Africa - providing vaccines and medicines, even when many others refused to share. Our 'Aarogya Maitri' initiative supports Africa with hospitals, equipment, medicines, and training. India is ready to supply Namibia with a Bhabhatron radiotherapy machine for advanced cancer care. This machine, developed in India, has been deployed in 15 countries, and has helped nearly half a million patients in different countries with critical cancer care,' he said.
He invited Namibia to join the Jan Aushadhi programme for access to affordable and quality medicines. He said, 'We also invite Namibia to join the Jan Aushadhi programme for access to affordable and quality medicines. Under this programme, cost of medicines in India has been brought down by 50 to 80 percent. It is helping more than 1 million Indians daily. And so far it has helped patients save nearly 4.5 billion US dollars in healthcare costs.'
He emphasised that India and Namibia have much in common. He stated that the constitutions of India and Namibia guide the people of the two nations to uphold equality, liberty, and justice.
He said, 'India and Namibia have much in common. We both fought colonial rule. We both value dignity and freedom. Our Constitutions guide us to uphold equality, liberty, and justice. We are part of the Global South, and our people share the same hopes and dreams.'
PM Modi stated that he is honoured to receive Namibia's highest civilian award 'as a symbol of the friendship between our peoples.'
Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah conferred on PM Modi the highest civilian award of Namibia - 'Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis'.
Emphasising that the friendship between the two nations has stood the test of time, he said, 'Like the tough, and elegant plants of Namibia, our friendship has stood the test of time. It quietly thrives in even the driest seasons. And, just like your national plant Welwitschia Mirabilis, it only grows stronger with age and time. On behalf of 1.4 billion people of India, I once again thank the President, the Government and the people of Namibia for this honour.'
He noted that India attaches great importance to its historic ties with Namibia. He stated that India sees great value in working together on Namibia's Vision 2030 and the Harambee Prosperity Plan.

The Centre of Excellence in IT, the India Wing at the JEDS Campus of the University of Namibia, and training in defence and security - each one of them reflects our shared belief that capacity is the best currency,' he added.
PM Modi expressed happiness as Namibia was one of the first nations in the region to adopt India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). He noted that the bilateral trade between India and Namibia has crossed 800 million dollars.
He said, 'Speaking of currency, we are thrilled that Namibia is among the first countries in the region to adopt India's UPI - Unified Payments Interface. Soon, people will be able to send money faster than one can say 'Tangi Unene.' Soon, a Himba grandmother in Kunene, or a shopkeeper in Katutura, will be able to go digital with just a tap - faster than a Springbok.'
'Our bilateral trade has crossed 800 million dollars. But, like on the cricket field, we are just warming up. We will score faster and score more. We are honoured to support Namibia's youth through the new Entrepreneurship Development Centre. It will be a place where business dreams can get mentorship, funding and friends too,' he added.
Concluding his remarks, PM Modi wished Namibia great success in co-hosting the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
'I conclude by wishing Namibia great success in co-hosting the 2027 Cricket World Cup. And, if your Eagles need any cricket tips, you know whom to call,' he said, evoking another round of applause.
Eagles is the nickname of the Namibian men's national cricket team. The 2027 Cricket World Cup will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
PM Modi received a standing ovation and non-stop applause after his address at the Namibian Parliament. After his address in the parliament, PM Modi in a post on X wrote, 'It was an honour to speak on India-Namibia friendship, our bond with Africa and India's efforts for global good, during my address to the Namibian Parliament.'

"Non-Hindus must be removed from TTD jobs immediately: Union Minister Bandi Sanjay
Tirumala (Andhra Pradesh) [India], July 12 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar raised strong objections to the employment of non-Hindus in the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) during his visit to Tirumala on his birthday on Friday. Addressing the media after offering prayers at the Lord Venkateswara temple, he questioned, 'How can non-Hindus be given jobs in TTD?' Why are they still being retained even after changes in governments and administrations? What action is being taken when over a thousand non-Hindus are employed in TTD? They must be removed from their positions immediately.' 'TTD should allocate funds to support temples, especially those that are unable to afford even the basic rituals like dhupa-deepa-naivedyam, ' he said, stating that it was unacceptable that non-Hindus are currently working in TTD despite lacking belief in Hinduism or the deity. 'Would mosques or churches ever employ a Hindu wearing a bottu (sacred mark on the forehead)? No, they wouldn't. So why are non-Hindus being given jobs in TTD? Continuing this practice, even after changes in government, is not right. I strongly demand their immediate removal,' he said, demanding their immediate removal. Sanjay asserted, 'Tirumala belongs to Hindus. If non-Hindus or foreigners want to visit the deity, a faith declaration is mandatory. Unfortunately, over a thousand non-Hindus are working in TTD, many of whom do not believe in Hinduism or the deity. Why are such people being employed and retained?' 'This is unacceptable. Their presence is affecting the religious traditions and rituals of the temple. Why are we paying salaries to people who don't even believe in the deity? Hindus across the country are opposing this. It's not enough to say they were appointed a long time ago, this practice must stop immediately.', Sanjay added. On the occasion of his birthday, the minister said, 'I prayed to the Lord that every citizen should live happily and peacefully. We must all unite for the protection of Sanatana Dharma, support each other, and work together for a strong and prosperous India. I prayed for Prime Minister Modi to be blessed with good health and a long life, as he continues to work tirelessly for national development and public welfare.' Sanjay asserted that vote bank politics should not dictate the functioning of sacred institutions, adding, 'Retaining those who act against Sanatana Dharma is wrong. Vote bank politics should not dictate the functioning of a sacred institution like TTD. This is the property of Hindus.' Highlighting the plight of neglected temples, especially in the Telugu-speaking states, he urged TTD to take urgent steps. 'Many ancient temples and small shrines are struggling even for daily rituals. TTD should identify such temples and allocate funds for their restoration and development on a war footing.' He further demanded the immediate construction of the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Karimnagar, for which the foundation has already been laid. Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 12 (ANI): Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs organised 'Dakshin Samvad' in Hyderabad as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations. The event became a vivid testimony to linguistic harmony, the multilingual consciousness of the nation, and the continuous progress of the Hindi language. In her welcome address, Secretary of the Department of Official Language, Anshuli Arya, said in a press note, 'Today's celebration - 'Dakshin Samvad' - is being organised in South India because Hindi has been adopted as the official language across the nation. Therefore, the celebration should not remain confined to a central event but be observed nationwide. With this spirit, we have gathered today on the historic and culturally rich land of Hyderabad. Hyderabad--where the voices of Telugu, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, and English echo together--is not just a city, but a reflection of India's multilingual soul.' She also remembered Ramdhari Singh, the first official language advisor to the country's government as a person who raised a fearless voice in favour of Hindi in the Parliament. 'The Department of Official Language was established on 26 June 1975. Many scholars, officers, and dedicated workers have contributed to this journey--some no longer with us physically, yet their memory and contributions remain indelible. We especially bow to the poet laureate Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, who was the first Official Language Advisor to the Government of India and who raised a fearless voice in favour of Hindi in Parliament,' Arya said. Highlighting the department's 50-year journey, she said that initiatives including 'Mantra' and 'Leela' had strengthened the department technologically. 'To promote the use of Hindi in offices, the department provided policies, rules, training programs, and technological tools. The inspections by the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language accelerated these efforts. Initiatives like 'Mantra,' 'Leela,' 'e-Mahashabdakosh,' and 'Kanthasth' have strengthened the department technologically. After 2014, this journey gained special momentum,' she stated. Speaking on the Prime Minister's role in bringing a revolutionary change in the perception of Hindi, she said, 'The simple, impactful, and spirited speeches delivered by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in Hindi, both in India and abroad, have brought a revolutionary change in the perception of Hindi among the youth. Among the five pledges he envisioned for a 'Developed India,' two--freedom from the mindset of slavery and pride in our cultural heritage--continue to inspire the Department of Official Language.' Expressing gratitude to the Home Minister, Chief Guest G. Kishan Reddy said he was thankful that Hyderabad was chosen for this event. He remarked, 'In these fifty years, the Department of Official Language has accomplished significant work. Promoting Hindi is the foremost duty of every Indian.' Guest of Honour Pawan Kalyan appealed for the use of Hindi on social media platforms. 'If we can learn foreign languages, why hesitate with Hindi? Hindi is easily understood across the country. I personally use Hindi on social media. On this Golden Jubilee of the Department, let us resolve to love Hindi, adopt it, and promote it,' said Kalyan. Recalling former President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, he said, 'Language should connect hearts. Let us view Hindi from this perspective.' Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh said, 'Inspiration to promote Hindi came from those whose mother tongue was not Hindi. Today, the Hon'ble Prime Minister and Home Minister are furthering that tradition.' Professor Manikyamba said, 'Over my 55-year tenure, I have witnessed the flourishing of the Official Language. The Veena of the Official Language resonates with the collective tones of all languages.' Professor Anant Krishnan said, 'I am here representing Tamil Nadu and proudly say that a favourable environment for Hindi is taking shape there.' On this occasion, several Hindi publications from various institutions were released, including contributions from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), ONGC (MRPL), Central University of Tamil Nadu, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Union Bank of India, Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), Indian Bank, and the Central Hindi Institute, Hyderabad. It is noteworthy that the Department of Official Language completed 50 years on 26 June 2025. The first Golden Jubilee celebration was held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, where major departmental achievements were showcased through book releases. This symbolic event signified that the journey of the department had transcended policy frameworks and become entwined with national pride and consciousness. Bharat Mandapam--recently a venue for G20 global summits--has now emerged as an inspiring stage for the promotion of Hindi and Indian languages. Carrying this spirit forward, the second major event of the Golden Jubilee year, 'Dakshin Samvad,' was organised in Hyderabad on 11 July 2025, becoming a symbol of harmonious dialogue rooted in southern India's linguistic and historical diversity. This event affirms that the Golden Jubilee of the Department is no longer confined to Delhi but has evolved into a national celebration, with Hindi now playing the role of a unifying force for dialogue across the country. On this occasion, the winners of sports competitions held for officers of the Central Secretariat Official Language Service and subordinate offices under the Department in Delhi were also felicitated. In the post-lunch idea exchange session, Telugu scholar Professor Manikyamba, Professor Annapurna Charla, Kannada scholar T. R. Bhatt, and Tamil scholar Anant Krishnan shared their views on the harmony between Indian languages and Hindi. All speakers expressed a shared sentiment of love for Hindi and affirmed their commitment to adopting and promoting it as a path towards a more harmonious India.
