The Washington Commanders' offseason saw the team move aggressively to build up its supporting cast around star quarterback Jayden Daniels. These pursuits included the addition of weapons to the passing attack, notably from the trade for Deebo Samuel.

But the Commanders also kept their trenches in mind. They spent their first-round pick on Josh Conerly Jr., an offensive tackle from the Oregon Ducks, after making a trade to bring in veteran tackle Laremy Tunsil.
Among all the moves of Washington's offseason, Samuel and Tunsil have been the unquestioned two biggest gets. However, the acquisition of Tunsil has caught the attention of scouts and coaches across the league.
Tunsil faces some questions after the Houston Texans showed no hesitancy to offload him through trade. One coach tells ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that could be a motivating factor for him with his new team.
"Dude's still as good as anyone," the coach told Fowler. "Honestly, I think he just gets bored and loses focus sometimes but I'm guessing he will be highly motivated in Washington, and when he is he's among the very best."

That level of elite protection is what the Commanders are investing in with Tunsil. And while the goal for the next few years for Washington centers on capitalizing on Daniels during his rookie contract years, there is also a vested interest in protecting him for the long haul into his prime years.
"He's still a top-three tackle for me," an AFC scout told Fowler. "And anything you can do to protect Jayden Daniels and load up while he's on his rookie deal is smart. They gave up a little more than I'd like but I trust AP [general manager Adam Peters] that he knows what he's doing here."
Washington showed last season they had enough pieces around Daniels to become a dark horse threat in the NFC. The additions of Tunsil and others are meant to move the needle on this front, solidifying the Commanders among the conference's title contenders.
Tunsil, a five-time Pro Bowler, makes a perfect example of that dynamic on this offensive line. And if the Commanders get what they bargained for out of Tunsil their dreams of title contention become even more attainable.

Seahawks OT Charles Cross returns to practice in limited capacity

Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle Charles Cross recently underwent surgery on a dislocated ring finger on his right hand. It was a bit of a surprise, but the instant indication was that Cross would be ready for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers. The latest update delivered more positive news regarding his status. Cross returned to Seahawks practice during Monday's training camp session, according to various local reports. The former Mississippi State standout was seen doing individual work. Cross' three fingers were heavily wrapped together, and he did not participate in any physical team drills. The Seahawks' regular-season opener versus the San Francisco 49ers at Lumen Field is more than a month away. That offers Cross ample time to get healthy. His limited participation at practice indicates he's on the right track. New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is working to improve the offensive line. Cross is undeniably the standout staple of an in-progress unit. Rookie left guard Grey Zabel is fortunate to have Cross playing on the same side as him. The Seahawks drafted Cross No. 9 overall in 2022. It was a direct result of the Russell Wilson trade. We'll continue monitoring Cross' status and participation at Seahawks practice. Charles Cross had surgery on his finger, hopes to be ready for Week 1

A bit of surprising injury related news for the Seattle Seahawks and their already much-maligned offensive line. NFL insiders such as Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport are reporting that Seahawks starting left tackle Charles Cross had surgery on his finger. The hope is he will be recovered in time for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers when they come to Lumen Field to kick off the 2025 campaign. Cross has been a standout staple of Seattle's offensive line ever since he was drafted No. 9 overall during the 2022 NFL Draft - a direct result of the infamous Russell Wilson trade. Cross immediately became a starter and never looked back, as he started all 18 possible games during his rookie season (regular season + Wild Card game). He was limited to 14 in 2023, but still started all of them. By 2024, he was healthy as ever and was a starter in all 17 once again. Cross is one of the best at his position and is obviously apart of Seattle's long-term plans moving forward. Hopefully, this surgery he recently underwent truly did go swimmingly and the recovery timeline is exactly as predicted. Seattle drew a tough opening matchup to kick off the 2025 season by hosting San Francisco immediately, and will certainly need Cross in the lineup to keep new starter Sam Darnold upright against the Niners' elite pass rush. Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald on how fans should receive Pete Carroll, Geno Smith

The Seattle Seahawks will play their first preseason game this week. The Las Vegas Raiders will travel to Lumen Field on Thursday evening for the exhibition opener. It'll be more of a spectacle than expected of a preseason opener, with Pete Carroll and Geno Smith set to return to Seattle for the first time since their departure. Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald was recently asked about how fans should react to Smith and Carroll. "Look, we should be cheering Pete when he gets here," Macdonald said. "We should be cheering Geno. How could we not?" Carroll was the Seahawks' head coach from 2010 to 2023. Compiling a record of 137-89-1 throughout 14 campaigns in charge, Carroll is the winningest coach in Seahawks history. With a triumph in Super Bowl XLVIII, he should undeniably be well-received by Seahawks faithful. Smith's legacy in Seattle is a bit more complicated. Discussions over a contract extension with the Seahawks went nowhere this offseason, prompting the trade to Las Vegas that reunited him with Carroll. The Seahawks were willing to pivot, signing Sam Darold to play quarterback. Seeing Carroll and Smith return to Seattle adds a layer of unpredictable excitement to this week's preseason opener.
