Johor police detain 150 in raids on 64 car wash centres

JOHOR BAHRU: A total of 147 foreign men and three local men, aged 21 to 57, were detained yesterday in a coordinated enforcement operation at 64 car wash centres across Iskandar Malaysia.
In a statement, Johor police chief CP Datuk M. Kumar said the joint operation with other agencies targeted non-compliance among operators, as well as offences involving undocumented migrants, drugs, and online gambling.
Investigations are underway under immigration laws for permit violations, overstaying, and lacking valid documents, alongside offences under the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Common Gaming Houses Act.
Kumar said offenders face penalties of up to RM100,000, jail sentences of two to five years, and whipping for certain offences.
Further action included investigations into illegal water connections, business licensing breaches, and failure to display price tags under relevant regulations. Authorities also seized equipment and issued compounds to unlicensed premises.
"The operation achieved its objective of ensuring regulatory compliance and addressing illegal activities involving undocumented migrants," he said. - BERNAMA

AKPS Tightens Officer Screening To Curb ‘Counter Setting'

PUTRAJAYA, July 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is stepping up efforts to curb 'counter setting' activities at the country's entry points, through stricter personnel vetting and policy reforms. Director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the agency is drafting a policy to ensure only officers with clean disciplinary records are deployed at border posts. 'As a new agency involving personnel from Immigration, Customs and other departments, we've inherited legacy issues. We aim to break that cycle through proper screening,' he told reporters today. Counter setting, a term referring to illicit dealings at immigration counters, has long been a concern, and Shuhaily said policy support and internal cooperation were key to addressing it. In a related development, a male immigration officer in his early 30s was arrested today after he was found with nearly RM8,000 in cash and three mobile phones, allegedly in breach of internal directives. The officer, with only four years in service, has been handed over to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in Selangor and is being investigated under Section 17A of the MACC Act. 'This is someone with 30 years of service ahead. Unfortunately, the lack of a swift mechanism to terminate such officers remains a major challenge,' Shuhaily said. He also noted public misconceptions about disciplinary procedures, with many assuming corrupt officers are simply transferred. However, he said that civil servants are entitled to due process, which takes time.

1,274 notices issued in special operation on seat belts in buses

JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said 878 notices were issued to express bus passengers and 107 to tour bus passengers. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has issued 1,274 compound notices under a special operation to ensure the use of seat belts by drivers and passengers of express buses, tour buses and goods vehicles since July 1. JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said 1,000 notices were issued to passengers for not wearing seat belts, 262 notices to drivers for the same offence, and 12 notices to express buses that failed to install seat belts, Bernama reported. 'For passengers, 878 notices were issued to express bus passengers, 107 to tour bus passengers, and 15 to passengers or drivers of goods vehicles. 'For drivers, 33 notices were issued to express bus drivers, 24 to tour bus drivers and 205 to goods vehicle drivers,' he said. JPJ is cracking down on buses following the fatal crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students last month. The bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, along the East-West Highway, when it crashed near Tasik Banding in Gerik. Initial findings revealed that the bus was travelling at twice the permitted speed limit and this was believed to be one of the causes of the accident.
