And though the award may only crown one, we pause to honour those who stood tall throughout the storm – players whose performances demanded applause, and whose names now rightfully enter the conversation for the PSL Player of the Year... Lucas Ribeiro Costa

The Brazilian playmaker was central to Mamelodi Sundowns' historic 18th league title, guiding the side to their eighth consecutive crown with elegance and purpose.
At 26, Ribeiro Costa made his presence felt not just with numbers – 16 goals and nine assists – but through leadership in the final third.
He consistently dictated play, linking up fluently with teammates, while showing sharp instincts and game intelligence.
Remarkably, he did so while staying clear of suspensions and injuries, underscoring his consistency and discipline.
It was a season that placed him firmly among the best in the land. Relebohile Mofokeng

A rising star whose name is already etched in the hearts of Orlando Pirates fans, Mofokeng lit up the season with flair and fearlessness.
His creativity, dribbling and composure under pressure made him a nightmare for defenders and a joy for spectators.
Mofokeng played a pivotal role in pushing Pirates to a second-place finish, and was influential in many key moments.
His meteoric rise has already sparked comparisons to some of South Africa's greats, and his inclusion among the top performers this season is richly deserved. Devin Titus

Often working away from the spotlight, Titus delivered yet another season of consistent excellence for Stellenbosch FC.
The 24-year-old winger featured in every league game, providing eight goals and five assists in a campaign that saw Stellies continue to overachieve.
Despite the club's modest resources, Titus' work ethic and attacking output were crucial as they secured another impressive finish.
His growth and maturity reflect a player who leads by example, and his reliability cannot be overstated. Iqraam Rayners
MAMELODI Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners continues to add his name to the history of the club. Photo: BackpagePix

Rayners proved once again why he's one of the PSL's most reliable goal-getters. The striker finished with 14 goals – second only in the Golden Boot race to Ribeiro Costa (16) – while also supplying nine assists, showcasing the growth to his game.
His transition to Sundowns after joining at the start of the season was seamless, and his all-round contribution in the final third made him a constant threat.
With both finishing and playmaking in his locker, Rayners is a strong candidate for top honours. Keletso Makgalwa

Maduka takes charge at Magesi FC, vows to build on existing foundations

Former Royal AM coach John Maduka was unveiled as Magesi'snew coach on Thursday. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix John Maduka has described it as 'a special honour' to be appointed head coach of Magesi FC and expressed his satisfaction at working alongside long-serving assistant coach Jacky Ledwaba. Speaking at his unveiling in the Limpopo capital, the former Malawian international said there was no need to bring in his own technical team, as he did not want to tamper with a successful structure. 'You don't break something unnecessarily,' Maduka said. 'I strongly believe that the technical team here has been part of the club for a long time. They helped Magesi gain promotion all the way from the ABC Motsepe League to the PSL, so they are clearly capable and know their job. "If there's no need for me to bring in someone, why should I?' HE'S HERE ⚽📢🐊! Magesi Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of John Maduka as head coach. Next Stay Close ✕ Maduka takes over from Owen da Gama, who parted ways with the club after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Club management believe that Maduka — previously in charge of Royal AM — is the right man to take the team forward. Curiously, the club declined to reveal the length of Maduka's contract, with general manager Hero Makgamatha implying it was effectively a 'pay-as-you-go' deal. 'But we can strengthen the technical team if the need arises,' Maduka added. 'This is a special moment for me, an honour to work for Magesi, which is a very good team. It's a team that always wants to compete, and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.' Maduka has set his sights on a top-eight league finish and hopes the club can retain the Carling Knockout title they famously won in their maiden top-flight season. He replaces Da Gama, who helped Magesi avoid relegation after joining in December as a replacement for Clinton Larsen. Larsen had guided the club to promotion and led them to Carling Knockout glory with a shock 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, but parted ways with the club after a poor run of league results. While Da Gama's tenure did not yield dramatic improvements, Magesi managed to stabilise under his leadership. Their ability to avoid defeat at their new home, the Seshego Stadium — having previously used the old Peter Mokaba Stadium — proved crucial in amassing enough points to retain their Premiership status, finishing in 13th place.

Gayton McKenzie's football vision in motion as business associate buys SuperSport United

Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie, Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie's mission to revive top-flight football in the Free State has taken a major step forward — with his business associate, Calvin Lee John, confirmed as the man behind the pending purchase of SuperSport United through Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd. SuperSport International announced on Thursday that it had agreed to sell the Betway Premiership side to John's company following a closed bidding process. The deal is now subject to approval by the PSL executive committee before it becomes official. The move brings McKenzie's long-standing football ambitions closer to reality in his hometown of Bloemfontein. McKenzie has previously spoken publicly about working with a consortium to bring back Bloemfontein Celtic and re-establish professional football in the Free State — a province widely regarded as one of the country's true footballing hotbeds. Next Stay Close ✕ Now, with Siwelele FC poised to take ownership of SuperSport United, McKenzie's influence behind the scenes appears to be paying off. 'As Siwelele F.C, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL,' said Calvin Lee John. 'SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL Executive Committee.' John is expected to be unveiled as the new owner, if the PSL gives the green light — and speculation is already mounting that a relocation or rebranding could be on the cards to align with McKenzie's goal of restoring Celtic's legacy. SuperSport United have enjoyed 30 years of stability under MultiChoice ownership, winning three league titles and producing some of South Africa's top players, including Ronwen Williams and Kermit Erasmus. But the broadcaster has opted to shift focus. I am a die hard Bloem Celtic supporter, until it's definite return I shall support all teams in PSL so long 🔥👊🏾 — Gayton McKenzie (@GaytonMcK) October 13, 2024

SOLD: Sale of SuperSport United confirmed

SuperSport United have officially been sold to Siwelele Football Club and are waiting for the PSL to approve the deal. This was confirmed in a statement by SuperSport International on Thursday, which added that after a closed bidding process, Siwelele were awarded the rights to purchase the Tshwane side. 'SuperSport International would like to confirm the sale of its Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd. 'Following a closed bidding process, Siwelele F.C was awarded the rights to purchase the three-time Premiership winners, pending approval by the PSL Executive Committee. 'The sale of the club comes as SuperSport makes strategic shifts to allow us to remain the biggest broadcaster in Africa and a leading global competitor. Shifts in the market, as well as the need to innovate in accordance with our core business, have necessitated focused direction to allow SuperSport to remain the best sports content provider on the continent and a leader in broadcast innovation,''' said SuperSport CEO, Rendani Ramovha. Siwelele chairman Calvin le John said they are happy to have won the bid to purchase the club. 'As Siwelele FC, we are privileged to have been given the responsibility of continuing with a rich winning tradition in the PSL. SuperSport and the MultiChoice Group laid an incredible 30-year platform that we wish to build upon, should we get the final vote of approval from the PSL executive committee,' Le John said. 'Out of respect for the PSL executive committee's processes, Siwelele F.C, MultiChoice and SuperSport will not be making any further statements pending the decision of the PSL.' Reports suggest that Matsatsantsa were sold for R50 million and will relocate to Bloemfontein in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season and will be called Siwelele FC. SuperSport United endured a horror 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, finishing 14th and narrowly avoiding the promotion-relegation playoffs.
