Honour for two South Yorkshire Police officers who died on duty
'Enduring debt'
The Elizabeth Emblem was introduced in 2024 as a civilian equivalent of the Elizabeth Cross. The design of the emblem includes a rosemary wreath - a symbol of remembrance - around the Tudor Crown.It is inscribed with the words "For A Life Given In Service" and has the name of the person it commemorates on the reverse.
Deputy Chief Constable Sarah Poolman said the award was a "fitting honour to recognise the sacrifices" of both officers.She said it served as an "an important reminder of the dangers and potential harm police officers confront every day on duty in order to keep the public safe".She added: "This national recognition is thoroughly deserved and it is the perfect way to honour their memory and their service as officers for South Yorkshire Police."
South Yorkshire Police last year installed a memorial bench dedicated to PC Rutherford outside Wombwell Police Station to mark the 30th anniversary of her death.In the same year the force also unveiled a memorial stone in honour of PC Howe near to where the fatal collision took place.
Announcing the list of 106 recipients of the Elizabeth Emblem, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Pat McFadden said: "We owe an enduring debt to the public servants who give their lives to protect others."The Elizabeth Emblem is a reminder not just of the ultimate price their loved ones have paid in service of our communities, it is a lasting symbol of our national gratitude for their incredible sacrifice."

Former MasterChef host Gregg Wallace has vowed he will "not go quietly", amid reports that he has been dropped by the BBC. It comes after the TV host faced an investigation, commission by MasterChef's production company Banijay UK, into alleged inappropriate behaviour while working for the BBC. In November, he stepped back from presenting the cooking show after accusations that he made sexual comments towards staff and celebrity guests on a range of programmes over 17 years. In a statement, released ahead of the publication of the summary of a report into the claims, the 60-year-old said he had been "cleared of the most serious and sensational accusations" made against him. However, he said the report, carried out by law firm Lewis Silkin, had found him "primarily guilty of inappropriate language between 2005 and 2018". In a statement, published on Instagram, Wallace wrote: "I have taken the decision to speak out ahead of the publication of the Silkins report - a decision I do not take lightly. "But after 21 years of loyal service to the BBC, I cannot sit in silence while my reputation is further damaged to protect others. "I have now been cleared by the Silkins report of the most serious and sensational accusations made against me. "The most damaging claims (including from public figures which have not been upheld) were found to be baseless after a full and forensic six-month investigation. "To be clear, the Silkins Report exonerates me of all the serious allegations which made headlines last year and finds me primarily guilty of inappropriate language between 2005 and 2018." Wallace said he recognised that "some of my humour and language" was at times "inappropriate" and that he apologised "without reservation". "But I was never the caricature now being sold for clicks," Wallace, who also referred to his recent diagnosis of autism, added. "I was hired by the BBC and MasterChef as the cheeky greengrocer. A real person with warmth, character, rough edges, and all. "For over two decades, that authenticity was part of the brand. Now, in a sanitised world, that same personality is seen as a problem."

Police name man who was murdered in Ayr flat
Police have named a man who died in a flat in Ayr at the Blackwood, 42, was found seriously injured in a flat in Glenmuir Place, at about 20:10 on Saturday. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Scotland said his death is now being treated as murder following a post-mortem examination. Det Insp Steven Slater of the force's major investigation team, has urged anyone with information to come forward."Our thoughts are with Mark's family and friends at this very difficult time," he said."It is vital that we get answers for them and we are fully committed to this."An extensive investigation is ongoing and officers are following a number of lines of enquiry."He has asked anyone who was in the area at the time and may have information or CCTV footage to contact Police Scotland via a dedicated online form.

UK bank hit with huge fine for ‘anti-financial crime' failures
Digital bank Monzo has been fined over £21 million by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for significant anti-fraud failures. The FCA found that Monzo allowed customers to open accounts using "obviously implausible UK addresses" such as Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street. These shortcomings in Monzo's anti-financial crime measures date back to between October 2018 and August 2020. Monzo also breached a regulatory requirement by failing to prevent the onboarding of over 34,000 high-risk customers between August 2020 and June 2022. The FCA stated that Monzo's financial fraud systems and controls "failed to keep pace" with its rapid customer growth, though Monzo claims "substantial improvements" have since been made.
