Venus Williams, 45, to end 16-month layoff in Washington
Venus Williams will make her return from a 16-month layoff at this week's DC Open, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion saying Sunday she is not sure of anything beyond that. The 45-year-old American overcame a serious health scare last year and after enjoying a visit to Wimbledon decided to accept a wildcard into the US capital tournament, the first hardcourt tuneup for the US Open. "I think I know what I want to do, but I don't always want to talk about it," Williams said. "I'm just here for now. And who knows? Maybe there is more. I hold my cards close, but at the moment, I'm focused just on this." Williams will open against 23-year-old American Peyton Stearns, ranked 34th in the world. Stearns won her only WTA title last year on clay at Rabat. The older sister of 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams has not played since a first-round loss at Miami last year. "My personal goal is to have fun I think right now and enjoy the moment, not put too much pressure on myself," Venus Williams said. "I don't know if I define success at this moment in any sort of way other than believing in myself and sticking to my process. That's not easy to do, especially after a layoff. So those are my goals." Venus Williams, the 2000 Sydney Olympic singles champion, has won five Wimbledon singles titles and two US Open crowns. The most recent of her 49 WTA titles came in 2019 at the Taiwan Open. That was the last year she played a full tour schedule. "I definitely feel I'll play well," Williams said. "I'm still the same player. I'm a big hitter. I hit big. This is my brand. "So it's about hitting big and actually putting it in. So this will be my effort. Put it in the court. That's my main goal." A year ago, tennis was far from the most important thing on her mind. "Yeah, my health journey was very scary. You know, this time a year ago I was preparing to go to surgery," she said. "There was no way for me to play tennis or play the US Open... I was just trying to get healthy. "In this last year, I have been through a lot physically, so to come back and be able to play and hopefully enjoy myself is a great opportunity." - 'Fun of the challenge' - Williams was feeling well enough to accept a wildcard and a visit to Wimbledon added some inspiration. "I had been hitting the ball and of course I love the game and the hard courts. It's my favorite surface, what I feel comfortable on. so all those different factors," Williams said of her choice to play in Washington. "When I went to Wimbledon this year, I was there for a day and it was so beautiful and exciting. I remembered all the times that I had, and of course the adrenaline, all those things. "I think just the pure fun of playing the game, the fun of the challenge, overcoming. Those things are very exciting." The seven Slam singles titles by Williams match the rest of the Washington field, which includes four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka of Japan. js/iwd

What can the Nets do with the rest of their cap space?
The Brooklyn Nets are wrapping up their Las Vegas Summer League with a disappointing 1-4 record, but are also coming away from Vegas with a good look at their four rookies. With that being said, Brooklyn has the rest of the offseason to worry about. While they are trying to figure out how to bring guard Cam Thomas back, they also have to think about their cap space. Per Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Nets renounced the free-agent rights to center Day'Ron Sharpe and forward Ziaire Williams as the team was looking to re-sign both players. Towards the end of June, it was announced that Brooklyn re-signed Sharpe and Williams in free-agency, but Smith pointed out that the two will be brought back to the team either with cap space or the "Room Exception." The "Room Exception" that Smith is referring to is the Mid-Level Room Exception (worth $8,781,000), an exception that can be used by teams with cap space, which the Nets fit into. According to Smith, Brooklyn has $22.3 million worth of cap space left to use this offseason and Spotrac's numbers as of this writing have the Nets at $19.9 million to use with just Thomas as the only restricted free-agent left to attend to. Due to the fact that Brooklyn is under the $139,182,000 salary cap for the 2025-26 season, there are no restrictions for them when it comes to trades or buyouts. However, the Nets, who have $134,733,990 in salary-cap allocations, "must spend to the salary floor by start of the season or team will have a cap hold assigned for the difference," according to Spotrac. At this point, the Nets have 18 players on the roster, including Sharpe and Williams, whose transactions are still considered pending, and forward Tosan Evbuomwan and guard Tyson Etienne, the two Two-Way players under contract. Brooklyn can go over the salary cap to sign Thomas due to his being a restricted free-agent, but time will tell what general manager Sean Marks decides to do with the rest of the cap space. TNA Seeking TV Rights Deal To Go Live 52 Weeks A Year
TNA Wrestling has some lofty goals for a potentially huge television deal for iMPACT. Anthem Sports President Carlos Silva recently spoke with JohnWallStreet. While discussing the current partnership between TNA and WWE, Silva revealed that Anthem is looking for a new television deal for TNA iMPACT that would see the brand go live 52 weeks a year. 'We are [regularly] being featured on every major WWE and NXT platform. PLEs as well as weekly programming on The CW and their other [broadcast] outlets like Peacock,' Carlos Silva said. 'This [has resulted in] a huge [television] audience lift for [us], along with all the social media support we get from [them]. 'A new media rights deal will help us build a more consistent fan base with larger reach. It will also provide us the opportunity to go live 52 weeks a year, and in today's world live matters [in terms of fan interest and revenues].' How much is Anthem looking to get a year for TNA iMPACT? Silva would go on to reveal that the company is currently looking for a deal within the $10 million a year range for iMPACT. 'Something in the $10mm/year range is where we [and CAA] think we should be,' Carlos Silva said. 'We're talking to [all the established] linear guys and a couple of newer platforms that need a foundational [programming] centerpiece. There are a couple of networks that look like Spike [TV] in today's world, we could be a good fit for, the same way [UFC and TNA were for that network a decade or two ago].' Finally, Silva stated that they are confident that iMPACT have a new distribution deal in place in the next two months. This would be a huge step up for the company as a majority of homes in the United States don't get AXS TV.
