A British woman, in her 60s, died after a fatal white water rafting accident on a river in a popular tourist hotspot in the French Alps - cops have since launched a manslaughter probe
A British woman has died after a fatal white water rafting accident in a popular French tourist hotspot as local cops launch a manslaughter probe.

The Brit, in her 60s, died on Saturday after the horror incident that happened shortly after midday, near the town of Briançon, in the French Alps. The victim fell from her raft during an outing that was supervised on the Guisane River and she was later "found on the riverbank", according to local firefighters. She was discovered by emergency services and rushed to a local hospital, in South East France, near the border with Italy.

The Brit tragically later died in hospital, when she succumbed to her injuries from the horror incident. Prosecutors said an autopsy would later be conducted of the woman "born in 1956".
A manslaughter probe has since been opened into her tragic dead and police investigate the circumstances around the incident, which will be led by Briançon CRS Alpes. This investigation will also look at the tour guides the Brit had been on the outing with at the time of accident.
A local public prosecutor said: "Investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances of the accident." A Foreign Office spokesperson, speaking to The Sun, said: "We are in touch with local authorities following the death of a British woman in France."

This British woman has unfortunately not been the only Brit abroad to tragically die while white water rafting. Schoolboy Matthew Hitchman died while rafting on a school trip to Ecuador when he was just 17 years old.
Matthew had been with classmates and teachers on a month-long school trek across the Andes when he fell from the inflatable boat, in 2017. Attempts to rescue Matthew "proved impossible" according to The Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
In a statement at the time, the school headmaster Philip Wayne said: "Matthew will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He was a caring, friendly and well-liked student who was highly regarded by his teachers and fellow pupils."
Another British teenager nearly died when she was attacked by a crocodile while white water rafting in Zambia. Amelie Osborn-Smith was left fighting for life after her foot was nearly severed by the creature in the Zambezi river.
A friend helped pull the then 18-year-old out of the crocodile's jaws before she was quickly airlifted to hospital with a serious leg injury.
Amelie said she wanted to "give back" to those who helped her get medical treatment and began fundraising to build a village school near the site of the attack. As a result, she won the Act Of Courage title in the Amplifon Awards For Brave Britons 2022.

READ MORE: Tall ship banned from festival over captain's nationality seen floating near harbour Local Spanish media have reported that the teenager died after falling from the third floor of the hotel. The death comes just two weeks after Evan Thompson, from Aberdeen, died at the same hotel after also falling from a height while celebrating his 26th birthday. Ibiza Rocks has since suspended all events due to take place at the venue "out of respect for those involved" and said that it will fully assist authorities. The hotel said in a statement: "We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred. "Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations. "The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority. "Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time." Spanish police have launched an investigation into the death, which they say "appears to be an accident". A spokesperson added: "As always, an investigation is underway, and we're awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death with certainty." "On the ice, he gave everything he had. Off the ice, he brought energy, kindness, and an infectious love of life that lifted everyone around him. "He wore his heart on his sleeve, and that spirit left a lasting mark on our team, our club, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him." The statement continued: "Gary's potential was limitless, but even more than that, he was simply a brilliant person to be around. He was part of our family, and his absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled. "We send our deepest condolences to Gary's family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time. Our thoughts are with you, and we stand with you in grief and in love." Mystery over death of Ukrainian anti-organised crime chief in Benidorm pool

A former official at Ukraine's Interior Ministry has been found dead at the very same Spanish resort where a Russian military defector was murdered. Ihor Hrushevskyi, the ex-head of the anti-crime police unit, was discovered in the town of Villajoyosa, a few miles from the resort popular with British tourists for its packaged holidays. The 61-year-old was floating face-down in the communal pool – no deeper than 1.5 metres – of the Cala Alta house complex, El Español reported. Neighbours pulled him out, performing CPR, but they were unable to save him and when paramedics arrived at the scene, he was pronounced dead. While there were no obvious signs of violence, blood was coming from one ear, so foul play has not been ruled out. The incident happened in the morning of June 29, but the identity of the man was only revealed this week. It was just a few months ago that Hrushevskyi had purchased a flat in one of the blocks and he was still renovating. His death comes a little more than a year after Maksim Kuzinovm – an ex-Russian helicopter pilot, who had deserted to Ukraine – was killed there. Police found his bullet-riddled body in the underground parking garage of that same resort. A burnt-out car apparently used by his attackers was found near the scene of the crime. The 28-year-old fled Russian and landed a Mi-8 helicopter in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv in August, 2023, while flying between two Russian bases. He had reportedly contacted the Ukrainian secret service to inform them of his decision to defect and they had promised him £397,000, protection for his family and new documents. More Trending A state TV report from October, in which Russian propagandists branded Kuzminov 'a traitor to the motherland', claimed that Russian intelligence operatives had received orders to assassinate him. Sergei Naryshkin, Russia's foreign intelligence chief, said at the time: 'In Russia it is customary to speak either good of the dead or nothing at all. 'This traitor and criminal became a moral corpse at the very moment when he planned his dirty and terrible crime.' Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on Hrushevskyi's death. Rosie Roche dead: Family mourn 'darling' cousin of Prince William and Harry

Rosie Roche, 20, was found dead at her family home in Wiltshire on July 14. Police have ruled out any third-party involvement as her family have now placed an obituary in their local newspaper The parents of Rosie Roche, the tragic cousin of Princes William and Harry, have paid an emotional tribute to their "darling" daughter. ‌ The 20-year-old was discovered dead at her family residence in Norton, Wiltshire. Rosie, who was studying English Literature at Durham University, was reportedly preparing for a getaway with friends when her mother and sister made the heartbreaking find on July 14. A firearm was found at the scene. ‌ She was the daughter of Edmund (Hugh) Burke Roche and Pippa Long, who are mourning the devastating loss. The family, who have strong ties to the British aristocracy, have described her an "incredible" sister to Archie and Agatha as they come to terms with the heartbreaking news. ‌ An obituary placed in the Yorkshire Post by the family reads: " Roche, Rosie Jeanne Burke Died on Monday 14th July 2025. Darling daughter of Hugh and Pippa, incredible sister to Archie and Agatha, Granddaughter to Derek and Rae Long. Private family funeral. A memorial service will be held at a later date." During an inquest hearing at Wiltshire and Swindon coroner's court, area coroner Grant Davies said police 'have deemed the death as non-suspicious and there was no third-party involvement'. Rosie was working towards obtaining a degree in English Literature at Durham University during the time of her death. A spokeswoman said she 'will be sorely missed'. The inquest has been adjourned until October 25. ‌ Ms Roche's death comes after Thomas Kingston, who married Harry and William's cousin Lady Gabriella in 2019, died in February last year aged just 45 with a firearm next to him. The financier suffered a "traumatic head wound", and a gun was found near to his body in an outbuilding at his parents home in the Cotswolds, an inquest opening at Gloucestershire Coroners Court heard. Police said they were satisfied the death was not suspicious. He and Lady Gabriella didn't seem to have any relationship or money troubles, a family friend told The Times - while another close friend shared that Mr Kingston always put others first, which might have affected his own mental health. The former financier, who studied economic history at Bristol University, had numerous brushes with death - the most notable being a suicide bombing at the church in 2004, which claimed 22 lives. Reflecting on the event, Reverend Canon Andrew White, who ran the only Anglican church in Baghdad, Iraq, where Mr Kingston reportedly spent time as a hostage negotiator, said: 'We couldn't move, and I can remember saying 'What do we do Tom?' 'And he said, 'Pray'. I said, 'Lord, have mercy on us' and suddenly a huge oil tanker about 25 metres ahead of us blew up. If we hadn't been in the traffic jam, we would have been killed instantly. But this was a kind of daily thing that happened.'
