RM260,000 worth of smuggled cattle seized in Kelantan

TANAH MERAH: The General Operations Force (GOF) foiled an attempt to smuggle eight cows last night, seizing the animals and a lorry, both estimated to be worth about RM260,000.
The seizure was made during an operation at Kampung Batu Gajah, here.
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the operation was carried out by the Eighth Battalion as part of Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan.
"The team stopped a suspicious lorry that was passing through the area at about 7.20pm.
"Upon inspecting the vehicle, GOF personnel discovered eight cows believed to have been smuggled from Thailand.
"The livestock were found inside the lorry without valid documentation," he said.
He said the 34-year-old driver, a local man, was detained at the scene.
"The suspect is believed to have acted as a transporter for the smuggled cattle, which were intended for distribution in the local market," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953.
The suspect and the seized items have been handed over to the Kelantan Veterinary Services Department for further action.
Nik Ros Azhan said the GOF will continue to intensify efforts to curb cross-border smuggling and safeguard national security.
