Vancouver Canucks 2024-25 Report Card: Max Sasson
Sasson made the most of his opportunities when called up this year. The 24-year-old recorded an assist in each of his first two games with Vancouver and showed that he can be a strong depth option. Sasson also played a crucial role this season in the AHL as he helped the Abbotsford Canucks capture their first Calder Cup.
One of the reasons Sasson played 29 NHL games was his never-ending motor. Regardless of score or time left, he would give 100% and try to leave a positive mark on the game. Whether it was getting in on the forecheck or firing pucks on net whenever possible, Sasson's hard work eventually led to him becoming a fan favourite this season.
As for Sasson's best game during his time with Vancouver, that came on December 12 against the Florida Panthers. He was all over the scoresheet, recording two assists, two shots on goal, four blocks and winning both his faceoffs. In the end, Sasson was named third star as he helped the Canucks capture a 4-0 victory against the eventual Stanley Cup champions.

Vancouver Canucks 2024-25 Report Card: Elias Pettersson (D)
While Sasson had some success in the NHL, his biggest impact came while playing in the AHL. He recorded 32 points in 41 regular-season games before producing 14 points in 24 playoff games. Sasson was also the life of the party at the Calder Cup celebration as he was the last player to leave the stage once the ceremony had finished.
Looking ahead to next season, Sasson is projected to be one of a handful of players fighting for a spot in the bottom six. He did sign a one-year extension this off-season and brings not just position versatility, but also speed to the lineup. Even if Sasson is sent down at the beginning of the year, odds are that he will find his way back up to the NHL sooner rather than later.
The 2024-25 season was a special one for Sasson. He made his NHL debut, scored his first NHL goal and became a Calder Cup champion. Based on his performance, Sasson receives a B+ grade for the 2024-25 season.

Thomas Muller, Vancouver Whitecaps in talks over summer signing: Sources
Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller is in discussions with the Vancouver Whitecaps to join the MLS side this summer, sources confirmed to The Athletic. Müller, 35, announced in a video over the weekend that his next adventure would come 'across the pond.' The World Cup winner, who is out of contract, is expected to sign with Vancouver on a non-designated player deal, at least initially, according to reports. The move is also pending an agreement between the Whitecaps and FC Cincinnati for Muller's MLS 'discovery' rights. Advertisement Discovery rights are a mechanism whereby MLS teams claim the right to negotiate with a player. FC Cincinnati previously negotiated with Müller after his representatives reached out to the club last winter. Sources said the asking price for the discovery rights from Cincinnati, which spent months working on the deal for Müller, is in the neighborhood of the $400,000 that Charlotte received from the LA Galaxy for Marco Reus's rights. GiveMeSport first reported the discussions between Müller and Vancouver. Müller, Bayern's all-time appearance leader, would provide a midseason boost to Vancouver, which was one of the best teams in the league to start the season and knocked Lionel Messi and Inter Miami out of the Concacaf Champions Cup en route to the continental final. The Whitecaps lost four of five from June 12 to July 12, but have won twice and drawn once in their last three and currently sit second in the Western Conference, one point behind leader San Diego FC, but with a game in hand. Müller would undoubtedly become the highest-profile signing in the Whitecaps' MLS history. While Canadian rivals Toronto (Sebastian Giovinco, Lorenzo Insigne) and Montreal (Alessandro Nesta, Didier Drogba, Victor Wanyama) have splashed the cash on big global names before, Vancouver has not had a player with a resume and cachet like Müller's. The Whitecaps did develop Alphonso Davies before selling him to Bayern, where the left back became one of the best in the world at his position playing as Müller's teammate. Müller even coined Davies' 'Road Runner' nickname. Sources said Müller was initially insisting on a designated player deal during talks with Cincinnati, which didn't have the roster space to make that move. Those demands appear to have dropped, however, as reports indicate that Vancouver could sign him on a deal in the range of max targeted allocation money (TAM), or around $750,000 for the remainder of 2025. Advertisement Müller had 250 goals and 223 assists with Bayern, winning 33 trophies, including 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues, across 16 years. He scored 10 goals across four World Cups with Germany, winning the Golden Boot in 2010 and the Silver Ball after the Germans' triumph in 2014. The German forward would be the second World Cup winner to join MLS in this summer window. Inter Miami signed Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul last Friday.

Canada's Michelle Plouffe announces retirement after career with women's, 3x3 national teams teams
Three-time Olympian Michelle Plouffe has announced her retirement from international basketball. The 32-year-old from Edmonton was part of Canada's women's basketball teams at the 2012 London Games and 2016 Rio Olympics, also helping the program win back-to-back FIBA AmeriCup championships in 2015 and 2017. She then shifted to 3x3 basketball, where she played — alongside her twin sister Katherine Plouffe — a big role in building the Canadian program from the ground up. Plouffe led Canada to multiple FIBA 3x3 Women's Series titles, a silver medal at the 2022 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, and a fourth-place finish at the Paris Olympics. She is now set to join Canada Basketball's high-performance staff as 3x3 performance manager. Plouffe will be honoured during the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series stop in Edmonton on Aug. 2. "This journey has always been more than just playing basketball," Plouffe said in a release. "It's been about people, purpose, planting seeds and watching them grow." "We never set out to be the best team in the world — we set out to be the best people to play with," Plouffe added. "And we believed the rest would follow. You don't plant fruit. You plant seeds. We planted encouragement. We planted trust. We planted love. That's what grew."
