Ole Miss women visit Baylor for the March Madness meeting that eluded them in 2022

WACO, Texas (AP) — Mississippi visits Baylor on Sunday with a spot in the Sweet 16 of the women's NCAA Tournament on the line.
This is the matchup the Rebels missed out on three years ago with a first-round loss in Waco that was the first-ever tournament victory for South Dakota.
The disappointment was even deeper in 2022 for the Bears, who had a 12-year run of Sweet 16 appearances stopped by the 10th-seeded Coyotes in the second round in coach Nicki Collen's first season as Baylor coach.
Now, the No. 4 seed Bears (28-7) are trying to turn their relatively new home court (Foster Pavilion) into the same Sweet 16 springboard their old one (Ferrell Center) was before the South Dakota stunner.
'We've had a lot of new experiences and opportunities, so really we're making history for the first time here,' point guard Jada Walker said of the cozy 7,500-seat arena near the Brazos River. 'For our seniors, we want to end our season right in this new home court and for the young ones, they get to continue that legacy, trying to keep hosting and just make Foster a winning place to be, just like Ferrell was.'
The fifth-seeded Rebels (21-10), meanwhile, will take a been-there-done-that approach into another hostile environment after opening the tournament at Notre Dame and Stanford the past two years. Not to mention places such as LSU, where Ole Miss won its regular-season finale, in the rough-and-tumble Southeastern Conference.
'We've been preparing since the first game of the season in Paris,' guard KK Deans said, referring to a 68-66 loss to JuJu Watkins and Southern California. 'A lot of road games, a lot of crowds. So this is nothing new to us.'
The year after her team fell flat on Baylor's former home court in Waco, coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin led Ole Miss to the 2023 Sweet 16 by winning at Stanford. The Rebels couldn't repeat the feat at Notre Dame last year.
Collen's redemption came last season, when Baylor won at Virginia Tech, a 2023 Final Four team, for her first Sweet 16 since replacing Kim Mulkey, who won three national championships with the Bears.
Both coaches are more interested in the next chapter than any old ones, particularly after the Rebels erased the memory of 2022 with a dominant 83-65 first-round win over 12th-seeded Ball State.
'We have a lot of experience. And this is just, to me, another game,' McPhee-McCuin said. 'I think the pressure's on Baylor. I don't think the pressure's on us. They're at home. As far as we're concerned, we're just coming out and trying to execute our game plan as best as we know — and can.'
Collen alluded to that pressure after the Bears were sluggish early in a 73-60 victory over 13th-seeded Grand Canyon, which had a 30-game winning streak but was making its first NCAA appearance.
At least the Bears don't have to worry about the Cinderella factor. The Rebels had the resume to host the early rounds, but settled for their highest seeding since 1994. Baylor is just a 2 1/2-point favorite, according to BetMGM.
'I know when I looked at the top 68 and we were 14 and they were 17, doesn't seem like we should probably be playing each other,' Collen said. 'But I think you're going to get a really elite matchup, really athletic Ole Miss team.'
Inside story
Both teams rode their dominance around the basket to the first-round victories.
The Bears kept getting the ball to Aaronette Vonleh, and the 6-foot-3 post had 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Rebels had a huge rebounding edge, as shown in a pair of double-doubles with Starr Jacobs (18 points and 11 rebounds) and Kennedy Todd-Williams (15 and 11).
'If you asked me that question first in every game, I would tell you it's the most important thing in every game we play,' Collen said when asked about rebounding. 'It doesn't matter who we're playing.'

Notre Dame's top-five positional battles to watch for during fall camp football

Notre Dame football is set to start its fall camp on Thursday, and with that will bring plenty of questions surrounding the 2025 version of the Fighting Irish. Head coach Marcus Freeman will have to continue his upward trajectory of the program, and that means that Notre Dame will have to find multiple new starters to continue this ascension. That is part of what the fall camp is all about, figuring out who will be able to be the next stars following the past ones. Below, I have outlined the five biggest positional battles that we all should be watching, and let's start off with the most obvious one. Who will start for Notre Dame at quarterback against Miami. Quarterback It's pretty obvious this is the biggest position battle that has the eyes for Irish fans, and rightfully so after the massively successful lone season of Riley Leonard. The main combatants are CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, as Freeman has yet to publicly announce who will take the first snap against Miami. Both are former 4-star recruits, and both don't have much experience at this level. You have to expect that Freeman will pick whoever he feels can lead Notre Dame to victory in Week 1. Defensive end This battle is not about talent, more about which of the injured or younger players will step up and take the starting role. Boubacar Traore and Jordan Botelho are coming off season-ending injuries while Bryce Young and Loghan Thomas are young with plenty of excitement surrounding each of them. Could a true-freshman take the reins of a start spot? Chris Burgess Jr. has the potential and Freeman isn't afraid to play first-year players. Safety Gone is Xavier Watts, which will leave a big hole at the back-end of the Irish defense. Adon Shuler is expected to step up, as could Tae Johnson or Ben Minich. Ethan Long and Luke Talich are other names to watch, but regardless of who takes over, you have to believe that Mike Mickens and Chris O'Leary will have them ready to roll. Defensive tackle Another big-time contributor left in Howard Cross III, while Rylie Mills, who repped there occasionally, also departed to the NFL. Jason Onye could big a big name here, but expect transfer Jared Dawson to secure one of the starting spots. Others that could factor into the rotation are Donovan Hinish, Sean Sevillano Jr. and Armel Mukam. If Gabriel Rubio returns to full health, he be one of the starters as well. Another position that is deep, but doesn't have solidified starters. Linebacker The heart and soul of the Irish linebackers Jack Kiser used up all his eligibility and moved onto the NFL. Drayk Bowen returns with a lot of hype, but who starts opposite him is the biggest question. Jaylen Sneed and Jaiden Ausberry played plenty, but it could be one of two younger players to take hold of the spot. Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa might be too good to leave on the sideline, and early enrolling Madden Faraimo has already impressed the coaching staff. It's a good problem to have, and any of them should be able to get the job done. Kim Caldwell contract details revealed: Lady Vols coach's salary raised to $1 million

Lady Vols basketball coach Kim Caldwell is one of the highest-paid coaches in the nation after her first season at the helm. Caldwell agreed to a one-year contract extension on March 31 – two days after leading Tennessee to the Sweet 16 – that runs through the 2029-30 season. The extension was finalized in late June, and it raises Caldwell's annual salary to $1 million. Her original base pay was $750,000, which made her the seventh-highest paid coach in the SEC at the time. Caldwell replaced Kellie Harper, who made $1.1 million in her fifth season at Tennessee before she was fired. Caldwell's new contract makes her one of six coaches in the SEC making at least $1 million per year. Fewer than 20 women's basketball coaches across the country made $1 million annually as of March 2024, according to the USA TODAY head coach salary database. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley tops the country after her contract extension in January that set her annual salary at $4 million with an annual $250,000 escalator. Before that, LSU coach Kim Mulkey led the nation in 2024 at $3.26 million. The next highest-paid coach in the SEC is Texas' Vic Schaefer ($2.3 million), followed by Texas A&M' coach's Joni Taylor ($1.5 million) and Ole Miss' coach' Yolett McPhee-McCuin ($1,087,500). Caldwell's original contract contains a clause that will make her the highest-paid coach in the nation if she wins a national championship. Caldwell led Tennessee to a 24-10 record in her first season. The Lady Vols reached the Sweet 16, where they lost to No. 1 seed Texas in Birmingham, Alabama. Caldwell also led Tennessee to an upset of UConn, which went on to win the national championship. Kim Caldwell contract extension includes updates to family travel, private aircraft allowance The extension amended the section on travel for Caldwell's family. While her original contract included travel for her spouse and immediate family members, her extension also allows for "one pre-disclosed, documented child caregiver" to travel as well. Caldwell gave birth to her son, Conor Scott Caldwell, on Jan. 20. There's also an update to the amount of trips Caldwell can take on a private or charter aircraft "for coach's personal, non-business travel, and/or that of coach's guests and/or family." Her original contract allowed for up to three round-trip flights or six occupied legs. The extension upped that to 10 occupied legs or 15 occupied hours of flight time, whichever comes first. Caldwell was recently in Los Angeles at the Sparks game for Lady Vols legend Candace Parker's jersey retirement. She also visited with former Lady Vols Rickea Jackson, Rae Burrell and Mercedes Russell, who all play for the Sparks. Cora Hall covers University of Tennessee women's athletics. Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey makes a bold proclamation following Friday's practice

You love to see when your quarterback has extreme confidence, and Notre Dame's Kenny Minchey did exactly that on Friday following the second fall practice. When speaking with the media, the second-year player proclaimed that he believes that he's 'the best quarterback in the country,' as On3's Jack Soble posted on social media. It's a strong claim, but one that ultimately could come true. Minchey will have to beat out CJ Carr first, but having that kind of confidence will go a long way. Everything that we have seen from his during his limited playing time and in practices seem to suggest that he's got the skill set to lead the Notre Dame offense. He's got the running ability to make defenses account for his legs, and the throwing ability to pop the top off of a defense. It will be a very interesting battle between the two, as the competition continues this fall leading up to the season opener on the road against Miami. Head coach Marcus Freeman will have a very difficult decision to make, but Minchey is very confident in his abilities.
