Netflix's Best New Show Has A 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score, But There's A Catch
That show is The Lazarus Project, a sci-fi series that originally aired in 2023 on Sky, but has now ported over its two seasons to Netflix. The series has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, an infrequent feat. Here's the synopsis, which is Groundhog Day-esque:
'George is under the impression that he is beginning to lose touch with reality when he finds himself living the same day over and over again. A chance encounter with a man called Archie reveals that George is very much in touch with reality, but at the same time, reality can be stranger than fiction. With George's newfound understanding of his power and perception of space-time, he is forced to choose between loyalty to an organization trying to save the world and the ability to rewrite the past for a friend.'
I did watch this a while back, and it's quite good. Time travel stories are tough to do right, but The Lazarus Project does a good enough job.
However, there's a problem.
The Lazarus Project comes pre-cancelled. After its first two seasons, viewership was poor enough where Sky did not pick up the show for a third season. It was not meant to end after two seasons, as season 2 ended with a significant cliffhanger that is not going to ever be resolved. So even if the show is good, the warning here is that you'll never get to see the full storyline unfold. I understand how that may mean you don't want to start it in the first place, as it's similar to a bunch of other shows that currently occupy Netflix's graveyard of unfinished projects. Here's what Sky said about its cancellation at the time:
"The Lazarus Project has brought audiences jaw-dropping action and time-bending storylines across two seasons, and we are incredibly proud of this BAFTA-winning series. Whilst we won't be commissioning another season, we would like to thank the incredible team who made this show possible."
One interesting aspect of The Lazarus Project is that it's a showcase for the upcoming new Severus Snape actor in HBO's Harry Potter series, Paapa Essiedu, who's the star of the show. Essiedu's casting as Snape in Harry Potter has drawn controversy, both for his race, given that it creates some newly uncomfortable situations like James Potter bullying a young black kid and hanging him upside down in the '70s, or just the fact that he's…young and handsome, which is not exactly how Snape is meant to be. But he's a great actor!
I don't know if I'd recommend the show based on how frustrating it is to not be able to finish a storyline. I'll leave that up to you.

LISTEN: How Noah Hawley and FX Brought ‘Alien: Earth' to Life; Kevin Feige Gets Candid as Comic Con Approaches
About eight years ago, multihyphenate Noah Hawley wrote a five-page pitch for FX on what he would do with the 'Alien' franchise if he ever got the chance to work in the world established in 1979 by Ridley Scott's seminal film. Next month, FX will unveil its wildly ambitious, first-ever TV series take on the sci-fi franchise that has spawned eight other films across the past five decades. On the latest episode of the 'Daily Variety' podcast, Daniel D'Addario, Variety's chief correspondent, offers insights into his inside look at the making of 'Alien: Earth' that is featured as 's July 23 cover story. That's a testament to the strength of the writer-producer's vision for adapting 'Alien' as a TV series for the present day. D'Addario notes that Hawley is a famously prolific 'idea machine' who has the trust of FX leadership. That's important given all that FX has riding on 'Alien: Earth,' which has topped the budget of FX's previous most expensive series. 'He's a novelist. He's written and directed feature films, and he just has the ability to work through this IP world without having it feel like a crass brand extension. It's 'Alien,' but it is fundamentally a Noah Hawley show as well,' D'Addario says. Also featured in today's episode is a conversation with Adam B. Vary, Variety's senior entertainment writer, about what to expect from San Diego Comic Con, which begins on July 24 and is always a mile-marker for studios and networks. Vary also discusses his recent sit down with Marvel chief Kevin Feige, who delivered a candid assessment of the studio's recent struggles. Feige cited a startling statistic that illustrated how Marvel simply became overextended in recent years as it ramped up production to feed series and movies to Disney+, which has been an enormous priority for parent company Disney. From 2008 to 2019, Marvel produced about 50 total hours worth of film and TV content. In the last six years, Marvel has produced more than 120 hours. 'That massive increase in volume really diluted the brand, diluted their quality. At one point he said, for the first time, quantity trumped quality.' And, that's a pretty blunt assessment for what went wrong,' Vary says. As for Comic Con, Vary predicts it will be less of a launchpad than in the past as Marvel is not hosting its usual state-of-the-industry presentation (hence Feige's charm offensive with journalists), nor does DC Studios have a big presence this year. 'It's generally going to be a little bit of a quieter Comic Con,' Vary says. Adam Carolla claims staff on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' was 'real scared' of 'mean' host
Carolla recalled his experience from when he was a guest on the talk show in 2012. Adam Carolla is not a fan of Ellen DeGeneres. The comedian gave his account of being a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2012 on a recent episode of the After Party with Emily Jashinsky podcast. "When you do [Jay] Leno, Leno was fun and breezy and easy and people were nice, and they were kind of laid back, and they weren't looking over their shoulder at all," he said of the former host of The Tonight Show. He added that his own former cohost on The Man Show, Jimmy Kimmel, also had a set that was "nice and people are nice." He didn't say the same about DeGeneres, who came up when the host mentioned DeGeneres having relocated to the U.K. following the election of President Donald Trump last year. Carolla claims DeGeneres had "always been a mean person," which he said he'd realized during his time working with the staff on the popular series that ran from 2003 to 2022. "People were scared, real scared," he said. "And I knew they were scared, because I was just sitting in my dressing room and their segment producer came in and he went, 'All right, so we went over all the stuff we're going to talk about' — Christmas vacation or whatever it was." Even after Carolla assured him that he would stick to the pre-planned topics during his conversation with DeGeneres, the employee wasn't satisfied. "And he goes, 'You're not going to talk about meat or beef or anything like that, right?' And I go, 'No, I'm not. I'm just going to talk about the stuff we talked about,'" Carolla recalled. As Carolla told it, the conversation didn't end there. "He came back like 20 minutes later, right before I went out, and he's like, 'OK, but don't talk about beef or meat,'" Carolla said. "And I was like, 'Oh, this guy's scared to death. This guy's scared.'" Later on, Carolla said he learned from one of the show's writers — an employee he didn't identify, because he'd signed a non-disclosure agreement — his hunch had been right. The writer claimed that DeGeneres was the "worst person I've ever met." EW has reached out to reps for DeGeneres for claims follow the allegations of a toxic workplace that DeGeneres faced beginning in 2020. Former staffers said they had been told to avoid speaking to her or even looking her in the eyes and accused producers of racism and intimidation. DeGeneres herself addressed the outcry, including in September's Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, which was billed as her final standup special. "I got kicked out of show business because I'm mean," DeGeneres said onstage. "Yeah, you all heard I was mean. Everybody heard that I was mean. Everywhere I go, I know everyone's heard that I'm mean. I know when I walk into a restaurant, people are watching, waiting to see if I'll be mean. 'Do you think she'll be mean first and then dance? Oh, look, she's reaching for butter.
