Backlash after Jiggly Caliente's obituary used as 'heartless' dig by Olympic swimmer

Daily Mirror30-04-2025
RuPaul's Drag Race drag performer Jiggly Caliente, also known as Bianca Castro-Arabejo,died on April 27 at the age of 44, just days after surgery to amputate her leg. News of the tragic passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes and significant media coverage as fans and friends remember the iconic drag queen. But for Olympic swimmer and gender critic Sharron Davies, the reporting on Jiggly's passing is just another drop in the well of "endless" drag artist coverage.
On April 28, Davies posted this message on X alongside the BBC News obituary for Jiggly Caliente's passing: 'When will this stop BBC? Endless drag stories. I'd love to know who's responsible?' The tweet has been viewed over 500,000 times and received immense backlash.
Davies' comments on the obituary have been called 'heartless'. One X user commented on the post saying: 'Imagine posting this, in reference to the death of someone who was far more humane than you could ever dream of perceiving.'

Deputy Leader of the Green Party Zack Polanksi also responded to Davies' post, writing that it was 'disgusting' alongside disability activist and award-winning journalist, Rachel Charlton-Dailey who commented: "It's a f--king obituary you f--king ghoul get a life.'
The backlash for Davies' insensitive post has some saying she has "ruined her legacy" as a former Olympic athlete by undermining Jiggly's passing. In addition to being a transgender rights activist, the drag artist was one of the first artists to represent Filipino Drag on an international stage.
The outpouring of tributes for Jiggly has overshadowed the hate. Drag Race judge, Michelle Visage, shared a photo of herself and Jiggly on Instagram expressing heartbreak at her passing.
Visage wrote alongside the shot: 'My jiggles…. The laughter was endless, our talks were special, your energy was contagious. You were and remain so very loved. This world has lost an angel and we want you to soar high... I love you so much honey.'
Olympic swimmer Davies has publicly supported attempts to exclude transgender women from women's sports, and has previously compared the inclusion of trans women in women's sports to doping. She has also been widely critical of the art of drag over the years.
Responding to one of Davies' previous X posts, television host Lorraine Kelly highlighted the power of drag. Kelly posted on X back in 2019: "Oh Sharon. You can't underestimate the power of drag and how it empowers people who often feel like outsiders - they can find their family, grow in confidence, learn to love themselves and be who they really are. It can literally save lives. And it's such a lot of FUN!"
Unfortunately, Davies is not the only person that has shared tactless comments on Jiggly Caliente's passing. RuPaul's Drag Race winner Tyra Sanchez posted a meme of themselves leaning against a tombstone with Jiggly's date of birth and death with the inscription: "Here lies she who came for me".
The news of Jiggly's passing was shared by her family, with their own tribute reading: "It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Bianca Castro-Arebejo, known to the world and cherished by many as Jiggly Caliente. Bianca passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, at 4:42 am, surrounded by her loving family and close friends."

Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley's 'real reason' for shock split after 13 years of marriage

This Morning presenter Cat Deeley and The Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty have announced their shock split after 13 years of marriage in a joint statement On Tuesday, TV stars Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty shocked fans by announcing their split after more than a decade of marriage in a bombshell statement. ‌ Now, insiders have revealed the 'real reason' behind the former couple's seemingly sudden split after 13-years of marriage. Patrick, 54, and Cat, 48, sent shockwaves when they confirmed their split joint statement to the PA news agency. ‌ Their statement read: 'We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved. ‌ 'We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment.' The former couple met while hosting BBC 's Fame Academy together in 2002, but it wasn't until 2011 that they finally decided to take their friendship to a romantic level. The two wed a year later in September 2012 at a ceremony in Rome and have two children, Milo, 9, and James, 6, together. ‌ Following their shock split, insiders have now claimed that their equally busy work schedules got in the way and drove a wedge between their marriage. Cat has hosted ITV 's This Morning alongside Ben Shephard since early last year, and previously lived in Los Angeles for more than 10 years. Meanwhile, Northern Irish presenter Patrick is the host of RTE talk show The Late Late Show, having taken over from Ryan Tubridy in 2023. Despite living in the UK, Patrick would travel to Dublin every week to present the show from the RTE studios. Due to their clashing schedules, it became difficult for Patrick and Cat to spend quality time together, according to insiders. ‌ Shedding light on the apparent reason behind their marriage split, the source said: "It is such sad news. They were so happy after they moved back to London, and would talk about their grand plans to renovate the house for the family. "But sadly, as so often happens with relationships, work got in the way and it put a huge strain on the marriage." ‌ The insider told Mail Online: "When Cat took the This Morning job in 2024, they were becoming more and more like ships in the night. "Patrick, in particular, has been spending more time in his native Dundrum where he has had a home for 25 years. His aunt died on Christmas Eve, and his mother's health was up and down before her death in March. His brothers John and Cahal have been such a comfort to him." The sad news of their split comes following concerns from fans that the couple would struggle with their different schedules when Cat and co-host Ben Shephard took over from Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield on ITV's This Morning. ‌ It has even been claimed that Cat and Patrick were living separate lives before their shock split was announced on Tuesday. However, Patrick previously hit back at the idea that the TV stars were struggling to spend time together, insisting they had developed a routine that worked for them and their two sons. ‌ When asked by The Times if the couple were like "ships passing in the night", Patrick denied this 'because Cat's doing her stuff in the morning, she would normally be back just after lunchtime". The comedian added: 'And we've got the start of the week and the weekends together, so it's not 'Hi/bye'.' ‌ Despite providing a positive outlook on the situation during the interview, Patrick also acknowledged that the couple went through a "tricky" period when Cat had to film So You Think You Can Dance in the US for seven weeks. He recalled: 'There was a moment after Christmas that was tricky, when Cat's show [So You Think You Can Dance] came back in America, and she had to fly to Atlanta for seven weeks. "There was a wee bit of a juggle there. But I think with all these things, as long as you have a routine, it doesn't take as much fizz out of you as some people think.' ‌ However, just a couple months on from Patrick's comments, he and Cat announced their separation. Prior to their unexpected announcement, the couple had moved their family from Los Angeles to London in 2023, and Patrick was commuting to his job on The Late Late Show. It came after living in the States for 15 years. ‌ They hadn't been pictured together in public for over a year, however, and Cat also missed Patrick's mother's funeral in March. At the time, a spokesperson told the Mirror that Cat had remained at home to care for their sons, explaining: "Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day." The Mirror has approached Patrick and Cat's respective representatives for comment on this story.

RuPaul's Drag Race star rushed to hospital after 'homophobic' attack at Tesco

A RuPaul's Drag Race UK star has reportedly been assaulted at a supermarket after receiving 'homophobic abuse'. Pixie Polite, whose real name is Mark Wickens, said they were punched by a man inside a Tesco store in London on Monday night. The 32-year-old took to Instagram to explain that the alleged incident 'evolved from general comments and mocking, into verbal homophobic abuse, then into violence'. Pixie, who finished fifth in the series in 2022, was said to have suffered a suspected concussion, but doctors found their symptoms were 'conducive with a general head injury'. Last night, Pixie posted on Instagram saying: 'Majorly appreciate everyone's concern and blown away by the amount of messages I have received. 'Feeling a little groggy today, and have taken the day off to rest and process what happened. 'Overall I'm pretty much fine but I am feeling the same sense of righteous indignation I felt last night. So please enjoy this picture of me looking like a bad ass, while I daydream about justice today.' Responding beneath, one fan @carlycheers22 wrote: 'I'm absolutely heartbroken that this happened to you. Sending you so much love and the biggest hugs.' Meanwhile, @ramonart added: 'Sending you all my love.' The incident is now under investigation with the Metropolitan Police and it is said that the alleged attack is being treated as a 'hate crime', according to the Mirror. Pixie claimed that they took a picture of the alleged assaulter and there was CCTV footage showing the attack. EastEnders confirms new romance in early iPlayer release as passion erupts

George has potentially found someone else… (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) This article contains spoilers for tonight's episode of EastEnders, which airs on BBC One at 7.30pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. George Knight (Colin Salmon) has moved on from wife Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) – with an unlikely local. The two separated earlier this year, when she believed he'd been unfaithful at Christmas with his ex-wife Sabrina. Son Junior (Micah Balfour) dropped the revelation out of the blue, with no real motive to expose his father other than wanting Elaine to know what he'd done. She was enraged to hear that Sabrina had tried to kiss him, and George didn't exactly make things better when he turned to his other ex-wife, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), for a shoulder to cry on. Elaine contacted old mate Drew Peacock (Paul Clayton) for a pep talk, and when he told her to take consideration of her own self-worth, she made the brutal decision to sleep with a stranger she'd just met moments before. Guilt-ridden, she couldn't keep quiet any longer and confessed all to George. His attempts at making amends and apologising fell flat, as she wasn't willing to take half of the blame. In the aftermath, his world has dropped apart. He's lost his home and job at The Queen Vic after the boozer was sold to Kat Moon (Jessie Wallace), and he's had to move in with brother Kojo Asare (Dayo Koleosho). He separated from wife Elaine earlier in the year (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) George came dangerously close to discovering Harry's secret (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) Little does he realise, Kojo has become entwined in his housemate Harry Mitchell's (Elijah Holloway) drug dealing, after flushing a stash down the loo. Harry has been forced into selling the narcotics for Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara), as the original lot belonged to him. To make matters worse, Ravi and his associate Okie (Aayan Ibikunle Shoderu) have begun to use Kojo's flat as a base for their operations – and in today's instalment, which can be streamed now, George came dangerously close to finding out. He'd announced his intention to leave the flat and move in with best mate Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), but by the time Harry showed up to prepare for Okie's arrival, George still hadn't vacated the property. It didn't take long for Nicola to seduce him! (Picture: BBC/Jack Barnes/Kieron McCarron) Follow Metro Soaps on WhatsApp and get all the latest spoilers first! Thinking fast, Harry told him that his mum Nicola (Laura Doddington) was holding interviews for a new bar manager at her nightclub, and that he should head down and apply. Upon arrival at Harry's Barn, he discovered that Nic' was actually searching for a bouncer, something which George wasn't interested in. She knew that she had to buy time, and after offering him a drink and having a heart to heart about recent events, seduced him! George couldn't resist her temptations, and it wasn't long before they were tearing one another's clothes off. Is this the start of a new relationship?
