Khazna Data Signs Deal to Build AI Data Center in Italy
Home » Tech Value Chain » Global Brands » Khazna Data Signs Deal to Build AI Data Center in Italy Khazna Data Centers, hyperscale digital infrastructure, and Italian energy giant Eni have announced the signing of a Head of Terms (HoT) to form a Joint Venture. The agreement will support the development of a 500 MW AI Data Center Campus in Ferrera Erbognone, Lombardy. The signing ceremony took place in Rome in the presence of Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation. Senior UAE officials and Italy's Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, also attended the event. Khazna CEO Hassan Alnaqbi and Eni COO Global Natural Resources Guido Brusco signed the agreement. The collaboration brings together Khazna's advanced data center design capabilities and Eni's expertise in sustainable energy. The new AI Data Center Campus will be powered by 'Blue Power' supplied by Eni. This low-carbon electricity is generated by a high-efficiency Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) Power Plant equipped to capture CO2 emissions. The project introduces a first-of-its-kind synergy between decarbonized energy and data center design in Italy. This agreement marks a key milestone in a broader program to establish up to 1 GW of total IT capacity in Italy. The program stems from a Letter of Intent signed during the state visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, to Italy in February 2025. The visit emphasized strategic cooperation between the UAE and Italy in AI, digital infrastructure, and the energy transition. The HoT confirms Khazna's role as the primary partner for designing and developing a phased master plan to reach the 500 MW goal. The Milan-based campus will support high-density AI and high-performance computing workloads. Key highlights: • The project enables sustainable, scalable AI infrastructure in Europe. • It reflects strategic alignment between UAE and Italy on digital innovation. Khazna CEO Hassan Alnaqbi stated the agreement represents a defining step in the company's European expansion. He noted that Khazna and Eni are laying the groundwork for infrastructure that meets the growing demands of AI. Eni's Guido Brusco emphasized the project's strategic importance for Italy and Europe. He highlighted both firms' strengths in innovation, sustainability, and rapid delivery. The HoT also sets the foundational roles and governance for a new Joint Venture Company between Khazna and Eni. This structure will accelerate the delivery of the project.

UAE backs Ukraine's rebuilding efforts with new partnerships
The UAE has reaffirmed its strong commitment to Ukraine's recovery efforts at the 2025 Ukraine Recovery Conference, held this week in Rome. Leading the Emirati delegation was Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, who highlighted the UAE's continued engagement in Ukraine and emphasised the importance of global platforms like the URC in coordinating long-term support. The UAE also welcomed Poland as the next host for URC 2026, emphasizing the importance of continuity in international cooperation. During the event, the UAE signed new humanitarian initiatives with the Olena Zelenska Foundation, aimed at supporting children affected by the conflict through education, psychosocial care and safe spaces. A trilateral agreement between the UAE, Italy and Ukraine was also announced, focusing on digital transformation, vocational training and empowering women-led businesses. In addition, the UAE and Italy pledged joint support for youth in Ukraine and agreed to co-finance development projects in Africa, including climate-smart coffee production in Ethiopia and sustainable farming in Côte d'Ivoire. On the business front, UAE-based Khazna Data Centres signed a major deal with Italian energy firm Eni to build a 500-megawatt AI data centre campus in Lombardy, powered by low-carbon energy. Al Hashimy also held high-level talks with Italian officials to strengthen investment ties and reaffirm the strong UAE–Italy partnership. Since the beginning of the conflict in 2022, the UAE has played a vital humanitarian role in Ukraine—delivering aid, building housing for orphans, and facilitating over 15 prisoner exchanges. The UAE also remains the only country to sign a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with Ukraine since the conflict began.

EU 'deeply regrets' US sanctions on Albanese
The European Union has said it "deeply regrets" US sanctions imposed on the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, an EU spokesperson said on Friday. "We deeply regret the decision to impose sanctions on Francesca Albanese", spokesperson Anouar El Anouni told reporters during a daily EU briefing, adding that the European Union "strongly supports the United Nations human rights system." Announcing the sanctions on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Italian lawyer had launched 'political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel'. The sanctions follow Albanese's scathing report published on 30 June, in which she named over 60 companies - including major US technology firms like Google, Amazon and Microsoft - she said were involved in "the transformation of Israel's economy of occupation to an economy of genocide". The report called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) and national judicial systems to investigate and prosecute corporate executives and companies. It also called on UN member states to pursue sanctions and asset freezes.
