Gill hits back with gritty fifty as India reach 86/2 at Tea
Manchester, July 26 (UNI) England captain Ben Stokes smashed a masterful 141 to steer his team to a mammoth 669 before India responded with a spirited fightback led by Shubman Gill, who struck a resilient half-century under intense pressure on Day 4 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. Resuming on 544/7, England added 125 more runs before being bowled out in 157.1 overs. Stokes, resuming on his overnight score, brought up his 14th Test hundred with a stylish leg glance, dedicating the milestone to his late father with a helmet-off tribute. His 198-ball knock featured 11 fours and 3 sixes and showcased a blend of aggression and composure, including towering sixes, precise reverse sweeps, and back-foot drives. Brydon Carse chipped in with a blazing 47 off 54 balls, striking two sixes and three boundaries, before falling to Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja eventually wrapped up the innings, claiming key lower-order wickets and ending with figures reflecting his perseverance across the innings. Jasprit Bumrah bowled with venom, including a delivery that kept low to castle Liam Dawson. India's chase began in disarray, with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and debutant Sai Sudharsan dismissed for ducks inside the first three overs. India stumbled to 1/2, with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease during lunch. Post-lunch, Gill launched a stunning counterattack. Despite England's chirping and an intense spell from Jofra Archer, Gill responded with elegance and intent, stitching together a 50-run partnership with Rahul in 15.2 overs. His strokeplay was exquisite: an upper cut over point off Archer, a sumptuous on-drive past mid-off, and several crisp back-foot punches against Woakes and Carse. He had a slice of luck too—on 25.2, Carse drew a thick edge off Gill's loose drive, but Liam Dawson at backward point fluffed a regulation catch. That drop proved costly, as Gill raced to his 8th Test half-century in style in the 29th over, flicking Joe Root for three to bring up the landmark in 77 balls (8x4). He raised his bat to the spectators and soaked in a well-deserved applause after weathering the early storm. England burned two reviews in failed attempts to dismiss Gill—once off Archer and again off Carse. Both times, the ball was either too high or missing the stumps. KL Rahul provided calm support, timing the ball sweetly off the back foot and dispatching overpitched deliveries with grace. He struck boundaries off Archer (5.1) and Woakes (12.1), holding firm on 30 at tea. At the break, India stood at *86/2 in 29 overs, still trailing by 232 runs after scored 358 in first innings. While the top-order collapse was concerning, Gill's composed and fluent knock has given India a glimmer of resistance as they face a daunting task to save the Test match. UNI BDN GNK

Stokes slams 141 as Eng rattle India at lunch
Manchester, July 26 (UNI) England produced a dominant batting display on Day 4 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, declaring their authority with a massive total of 669 in 157.1 overs, thanks to Ben Stokes' heroic 141 and Brydon Carse's entertaining 47. India, in their second innings, suffered a double blow before lunch, reaching a precarious 1/2 in just 3 overs. Resuming at 544/7, England raced past the 550-mark in the 137th over as Stokes began the morning session with aggressive intent. The England skipper registered his 14th Test hundred off 164 balls, playing a captain's knock just a day after claiming a five-wicket haul—an all-round feat not seen from him in nearly three years. His century was brought up with a stylish leg glance, followed by a helmet-off tribute to his late father, drawing emotional applause from spectators. Stokes then unleashed a flurry of strokes: sixes over long-off and long-on, reverse sweeps, and back-foot punches, displaying brute power and finesse in equal measure. He smashed 11 fours and 3 sixes in his 198-ball knock before falling to Ravindra Jadeja, caught by Sai Sudharsan at long-on while attempting another big hit. Brydon Carse added crucial lower-order runs, clobbering two sixes and three fours in his entertaining 47 off 54 balls. His intent was clear—charging down to smash Washington Sundar and Jadeja over the ropes. His innings ended when he miscued a slog-sweep off Jadeja, with Siraj holding a comfortable catch at deep backward square. Jadeja cleaned up the tail with key wickets, finishing with figures that reflected his persistence through the innings. Jasprit Bumrah too chipped in, dismissing Liam Dawson with a sharp delivery that stayed low and knocked back off stump. India's response was nightmarish. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan were both dismissed for ducks, leaving the visitors at 1/2 in just 3 overs. KL Rahul (1*) and Shubman Gill (0*) were at the crease at lunch, with the massive English total looming over them like a mountain. With a deficit of 353 runs and eight wickets in hand, India face a herculean task to save this match. India heads code 358 in their first innings. UNI BDN RN

Odisha logs rise in maritime trade, logistics capabilities
Bhubaneswar, July 26 (UNI) Odisha's maritime trade and logistics capabilities have strengthened substantially, both domestically and globally, officials claimed on Saturday. Powered by a futuristic and policy-based approach to transform its maritime sector, Odisha is marching ahead following the initiatives by the Odisha Maritime Board and Commerce & Transport Department, they said. The government's initiative includes modernising and expanding key ports, creating robust, port-linked economic ecosystems, they said. Cargo handling capacities at non-major ports have reached 80 MTPA, with Dhamra Port handling 46.08 MTPA and Gopalpur Port handling 06 MTPA cargo in the FY 2024-25, leading to a substantial revenue generation of INR 306.15 Crore for the State in FY 2024-25. Paradip Port Authority, the major port in Odisha has once again come up at the largest cargo handling major port in India while handling 150.41 MTPA Cargo in FY 2024-25. The introduction of advanced port technologies and deeper berths is opening new avenues for trade, industry, and regional integration. Internationally, improved connectivity through Dhamra and Gopalpur ports has made Odisha a crucial hub for global commerce, enhancing export-import ties and market access. Domestically, focus on better coastal shipping routes and feeder services have improved connectivity to industrial and agricultural centres, ensuring seamless last-mile delivery of goods. The execution of concession agreement with JSW Utkal Steel Limited for the establishment of a captive jetty to handle cargo for its Integrated Steel Plant highlights the state's dedication to supporting industrial growth through specialised maritime infrastructure. The said project shall bring a whopping investment of Rs 2,104 Cr and employment generation (direct & indirect) of nearly 3,450 persons. On the other hand, the concession agreement with the Gopalpur Ports Ltd. has also been revised to bring into effect the shareholding change of 95% equity shares to Adani Ports & SEZ. This shall bring in an investment of INR 16,554 Cr with direct & indirect employment generation of about 5,000 people. The efforts emphasise the holistic, strategic and economic development of the state through leveraging its coastline. To bolster the requirement of a skilled workforce in maritime training, simulators have been installed at the Crew Training Institute Chandbali and Odisha Maritime Academy, offering realistic ship operation simulations. Furthermore, to improve safety in inland water transport, the Directorate Ports & IWT has distributed nearly 35,000 life-saving equipment (lifebuoys, life jackets and fire extinguishers) to boat owners with a 95% subsidy, concluded the officials.
