Sri Sathya Sai Collector warns against gender determination tests
Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T.S. Chetan on Saturday (May 24) said gender determination test is a criminal offense under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT Act, 1994) and warned of action against scanning centres conducting the tests and those encouraging it.
He was addressing medical and paramedical staff and individuals and entities working against gender determination test at an event in the collectorate.
'The departments of medical and health, women and child welfare, civic bodies, revenue and police as well as NGOs should strive to enforce the law,' he said, adding that searches should be carried out frequently in scanning centres suspected to be conducting such tests.
Mr. Chetan said scanning centres violating the Act would be sealed and the operators would face serious legal consequences, including imprisonment.
Additional District Judge K. Shailaja underscored the need for maintaining strict surveillance across the border areas with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
The Collector also reviewed the birth and death records at civic bodies and private nursing homes. He directed the District Medical and Health officer to submit a report on mandal-level sex ratio.

Court acquits woman in 10-yr-old flesh trade case
Thane: A Thane court has acquitted a 57-year-old woman accused in a 10-year-old case of flesh trade that involved women trafficking and pushing them into prostitution. The prosecution told the court that the police's anti-human trafficking cell had raided an apartment at Savarkar Nagar in February 2015, arresting the accused after sending a decoy customer. The police also rescued three women who were pushed into the trade. The accused was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 370 (trafficking of persons) and provision of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act. The judge noted the decoy and victims were not examined by the prosecution. According to the court, the victims were not traceable and the decoy did not turn up despite summons. The prosecution failed to comply with the order of January 31, 2025, that asked them to arrange for the witnesses for deposition and were unable to prove the charges levelled against the accused. Himachal Pradesh government takes strict action against drug related activities among employees and launches anti drug campaign
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday sounded the alarm over the growing nexus between drug traffickers and govt staff, revealing that more than 80 state employees — including police officers — face legal proceedings for drug-related offences. S peaking at the 12th HP Police Half Marathon in Shimla, Sukhu said the state govt was preparing a large-scale anti-drug operation, including the possible amendment of the police manual to enhance accountability within the force. "Even those expected to uphold the law are falling prey to the drug menace," the CM said. "We are mapping the problem down to the panchayat ward level to carry out targeted interventions." Sukhu announced that the state will raise a special task force to intensify the crackdown, with recruitment in progress already. As part of the effort, 500 new police posts will be created to bolster enforcement. He also underscored a dual strategy combining strict law enforcement with a compassionate approach towards drug victims. The govt has invoked the PIT-NDPS Act — which Sukhu claimed had remained dormant under the previous BJP govt — to detain habitual offenders. Of the 40 preventive detention orders approved under the Act, 36 were issued this year. In a further sign of zero-tolerance, the state has demolished properties of seven convicted drug peddlers and is pursuing similar action against others. Wife among three get life term for man's murder in Jabalpur
Jabalpur: A woman, her lover and his accomplice have been sentenced to life in jail for her husband's murder in Jabalpur in 2022, and staging the crime as a road accident after he objected to the affair. The special court of Judge Girish Dixit that hears cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act found all three guilty on the basis of evidence presented by the prosecution. According to the prosecution, Ashish Chaudhary, a resident of the Majhgawan police station area, worked as a mason, and was married to Manisha alias Sadhana. Ashish's wife was involved in a love affair with Dharmendra alias Dhannu, who lived in her village. To remove the obstacle in their relationship, the wife conspired with Dharmendra and his accomplice Amil alias Chalis to murder Chaudhary. On Sept 25, 2022, Chaudhary went to Kumhi village for a weekly market. According to the plan, Dharmendra and Amil met Ashish at the market. They made him drink alcohol, causing him to become heavily intoxicated. The two then took him on his motorcycle towards Parsel village, where they killed him by hitting his head with a stone. To make the murder look like an accident, they left the body and motorcycle at the scene to suggest he had died in a drunken road crash. District public prosecutor Smritilata Barkade and special public prosecutor Navita Pillai represented the state in the court.
