Shankar to make a movie out of Velpari novel
While attending a recent event as a guest for the novel Velpari, which sold one lakh copies, Shankar said, 'Once, my dream project was Enthiran. Now, my dream project is Velpari. Whenever a big-budget movie is made, people say it would be a grand venture like Chandralekha, but truly, Velpari will be as big, if not bigger, than that.'
Game Changer | Hindi Song - Jaragandi (Lyrical)
He further elaborated on what makes Velpari such a monumental project for him: 'As far as I believe, this film could be one of the biggest ventures ever made, owing to the elements of costume, art, and the level of production it will require. However, the scope of technology makes me say that Velpari would be a global-standard movie, on par with the likes of
or Avatar.'
Rajinikanth's expectations about Shankar's upcoming movie
Superstar Rajinikanth, who attended the event as the chief guest, did not hold back in appreciating Shankar's impact on the growth of Tamil cinema in the 1990s. He reflected on their successful collaborations and expressed anticipation for Velpari.
Velpari is based on Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Pari, a historical novel penned by Su Venkatesan. The story centres around the legendary ruler Vel Paari and the opposition he faced from the three mighty Tamil dynasties—Chera, Chola, and Pandya.
Shankar's recent releases, Indian 2 and Game Changer, could not live up to the expectations of fans and critics.
Rajinikanth's work front
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth is gearing up for his next release, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film is scheduled to hit screens on August 14, 2025.

HIT 3 script entirely original, accusations are false, says Nani
The actor files counter affidavit denying plagiarism allegations made by a Tamil writer. Actor Nani has filed a counter affidavit in response to a recent petition by Tamil scriptwriter and author Vimalavelan, who alleged that the actor's recent Telugu film HIT: The Third Case was plagiarised from his script (Agent 11) and novel (Agent V). Nani claimed that the accusations are 'false, misleading and unfounded'. Since Vimalavelan's script is written in Tamil, Nani and the other respondents stated that they are not familiar with the language and have requested for its official English translation so that they can give an effective and informed response on the alleged similarities between both scripts. They also claimed that the similarities pointed out by Vimalavelan are standard tropes and recurring motifs in the thriller, crime, and investigative genres. 'These elements are not unique, distinctive, or original to the plaintiff's work, nor are they protectable under copyright law,' stated the affidavit while opposing the writer's request for an interim injunction. Vimalavelan had claimed that he sent the synopsis of his script to Nani's mail ID that was mentioned on his Facebook page in 2022, and that's how the actor accessed his script. Responding to the same, the affidavit countered the claim and stated that the email address is 'not actively monitored for unsolicited creative submissions, nor is it used as an official channel for receiving or reviewing story/scripts'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Siemens Energy lidera com inovação Siemens Energy Saiba Mais Undo They also denied having reviewed or relied upon any email or material purportedly sent by the plaintiff. The next hearing on the case is scheduled for July 28. S Shankar Faces Backlash For Comparing Velpari To Avatar And Game of Thrones
Last Updated: Filmmaker S Shankar faces criticism after claiming his project Velpari could match Avatar and Game of Thrones. Critics cite his recent flops, Game Changer and Indian 2. Filmmaker S Shankar has found himself at the centre of social media criticism after making bold statements about his upcoming project titled Velpari. The director claimed that the film, an adaptation of the historical Tamil novel, has the potential to match the global scale and technological achievements of international hits like Avatar and Game of Thrones. Speaking at a recent event, Shankar said, 'Enthiran (2010 film with superstar Rajinikanth) was my previous dream project. Now, Velpari is my dream film. It has the scope to introduce new technologies like Game of Thrones and Avatar. Velpari has the potential to become the pride of Tamil cinema and Indian cinema. It can achieve global recognition. Hope the dream comes true." 'Enthiran was my Previous Dream project, now #Velpari is my dream film🤞. It scope to introduce new technologies. Like GameOfThrones & Avatar, Velparu has all scope to become our Pride Indian-Tamil film❤️🔥. Hope Dream comes true"– #Shankar at today's event — AmuthaBharathi (@CinemaWithAB) July 11, 2025 However, the director's grand vision has sparked skepticism online, especially given the poor performance of his recent films. His last two releases, Game Changer and Indian 2, failed to meet expectations, both at the box office and among critics. Game Changer, starring Ram Charan, was reportedly made on a massive budget of Rs 400 crore but managed to earn only Rs 186 crore worldwide. Similarly, Indian 2, produced on a budget of Rs 250 crore, grossed about Rs 150 crore globally. Both projects were widely considered commercial disappointments. Following his comments about Velpari, several users on social media platforms expressed frustration, accusing Shankar of focusing too much on high budgets and flashy technology, while ignoring storytelling and financial accountability. One user wrote, 'Producer will have to beg after this film… Sir, at least try to do good films in a limited budget. You waste too much money! Who spent 75 crore for a song only?" Others called for him to scale down his productions or even suggested retirement. Shankar has yet to respond to the backlash, but with no confirmed producer yet attached to Velpari, questions remain about whether the ambitious project will move forward. Picture Credit: X Pooja Hegde is currently receiving rave reviews for her latest special appearance in the song 'Monica' from the much-awaited Tamil action thriller 'Coolie,' starring superstar Rajinikanth. Now, the latest reports suggest that the actress is making her long-awaited Tollywood comeback. According to a report by Gulte, after a long hiatus from Telugu cinema, Pooja is apparently in discussions to star in a new love story opposite Dulquer Salmaan . It sounds like it will mark the directorial debut of Ravi, an unknown from the world of Telugu cinema, and is being produced by the makers of 'Dasara' and the upcoming film 'Paradise.' Although she has not yet signed the dotted line, reports state that Pooja is leaning towards accepting the script and might be signing soon. Pooja's last full-fledged Telugu film was 'Acharya', which she signed back in 2020. She has spent limited time in Tollywood since, making a small appearance in 'F3', and was a member of 'Guntur Kaaram', however, she exited the film during the early production phase. Though she has not had success in Telugu cinema recently, she has a huge fan base. Her last major Telugu success was 'Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo', which remains one of the highest-grossing Telugu films in recent times. Shift to Tamil and Hindi films In the meantime, she has spent the last year working in Tamil and Hindi. In Tamil films, she worked opposite Vijay in 'Beast', and has multiple other projects in the works, such as 'Retro' and the upcoming films 'Jana Nayagan,' and 'Coolie'. If reports are to be believed and Dulquer is a part of the film, then, it will be his third outing after his two super hits with the romance drama 'Sita Raman' and finance drama film 'Lucky Bhaskar'.
