King: Be ready for anything

KUALA LUMPUR: The increasingly challenging and uncertain global political landscape requires the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) to remain ever ready and equipped with the latest defence technology to face any eventuality, says His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
His Majesty said the Iran-Israel war and prolonged conflict in Gaza clearly show that international laws are no longer sufficient to safeguard global peace.
'It is crucial for ATM to always be prepared and equipped with the latest technology to deal with any possibility, as we don't know who is a friend and who is an enemy,' the King said when officiating the commissioning parade and presentation of appointment letters to ATM cadet officers at Kem Perdana in Sungai Besi here yesterday.
At the same time, Sultan Ibrahim reminded the government to ensure that there is no political interference or influence from suppliers in all defence procurement processes.
'ATM's top leadership must also always act with integrity and steer clear of corrupt practices.
'As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, I will not tolerate anyone who abuses their position for personal gain,' the King added.
Sultan Ibrahim also expressed concern over the culture of social media use among military personnel and reminded them not to share everything online, particularly information related to troop deployments, unit locations and other sensitive details.
His Majesty said the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel showed how both sides have easily exploited information obtained through technology companies, smart applications and social media to launch attacks.
'I want this to stop immediately. Use sound judgment and refrain from disclosing unnecessary information to the public. It is better to be cautious now than to regret later,' His Majesty said, Bernama reported.
The King congratulated the 509 cadet officers who completed their training and reminded them that a military career demands great sacrifices, personal strength, honesty and unwavering loyalty to the King and country.
His Majesty also called on them to be leaders who uphold discipline, train their personnel effectively and prioritise their welfare, while also expressing appreciation to the parents who entrusted their beloved children to serve in the armed forces.
The ceremony was also attended by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Khaled Nordin, Chief of Defence Forces Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Army chief Jen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain and Air Force chief Jen Datuk Muhamad Norazlan Aris.

Chow said Penang is well-prepared to host the celebration through a main committee and a working committee, supported by 16 sub-committees responsible for various aspects of preparations. 'Given the ample time until September 16, I am confident the working committee and its sub-committees will continue the preparations until the event is successfully held,' he said. Earlier, Fahmi paid a courtesy visit to Chow as part of his two-day working trip to Penang, during which they spent about 30 minutes together. GENERAL GEORGE TOWN, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Day 2025 celebration will be held at the PICCA Convention Centre @Arena Butterworth on the mainland on Sept 16, featuring a variety of programmes to enliven the event, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said the celebration will begin at 8.30 pm and is scheduled to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "Malaysia Day celebrations are sometimes held in open venues, such as last year at Padang Merdeka in Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), and sometimes indoors, like at Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching, Sarawak, two years ago. 'What's different this time is that the Cabinet has decided that Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia will take turns hosting the Malaysia Day celebration. This aims to strengthen ties between the states and foster a greater sense of togetherness and patriotism,' he said. He told reporters this after chairing the Malaysia Day 2025 Celebration Main Committee Meeting with Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the Komtar building here today. Qatar urges Israel, Hamas to seize ‘window of opportunity' for Gaza truce

(AP pic) DOHA : Gaza mediators are engaging with Israel and Hamas to build on momentum from this week's ceasefire with Iran and work towards a truce in the Palestinian territory, Qatar foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said. Israel and Iran on Tuesday agreed to a ceasefire brokered by the US and Qatar just hours after the Islamic republic launched a salvo of missiles towards the wealthy Gulf state, targeting the American military base hosted there. The unprecedented attack on Qatari soil followed Washington's intervention into a days-long war between Israel and Iran which saw US warplanes strike Iranian nuclear facilities, prompting promises of retaliation from Tehran. In an interview with AFP on Friday, Ansari said Doha – with fellow Gaza mediators in Washington and Cairo – was now 'trying to use the momentum that was created by the ceasefire between Iran and Israel to restart the talks over Gaza'. 'If we don't utilise this window of opportunity and this momentum, it's an opportunity lost amongst many in the near past. We don't want to see that again,' the spokesman, who is also an adviser to Qatar's prime minister, said. US President Donald Trump voiced optimism on Friday about a new ceasefire in Gaza saying an agreement involving Israel and Hamas could come as early as next week. Mediators have been engaged in months of back-and-forth negotiations with the warring parties aimed at ending 20 months of war in Gaza, with Ansari explaining there were no current talks between the sides but that Qatar was 'heavily involved in talking to every side separately'. A two-month truce, which was agreed as Trump came into office in January, collapsed in March with Israel intensifying military operations in Gaza afterwards. 'We have seen US pressure and what it can accomplish,' Ansari said referring to the January truce which saw dozens of hostages held by Hamas released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. The Qatari official said particularly in the context of US enforcement of the Israel-Iran truce, it was 'not a far-fetched idea' that pressure from Washington would achieve a fresh truce in Gaza. 'We are working with them very, very closely to make sure that the right pressure is applied from the international community as a whole, especially from the US, to see both parties at the negotiating table,' Ansari said. There were no casualties on Monday when Iran targeted Al Udeid, the Middle East's biggest US base and headquarters of its regional command. Ansari said that as leaders were weighing their response to the attack, a call came from the US president to Qatar's emir, saying 'there is a possibility for regional stability… and that Israel has agreed to a ceasefire'. 'Qatar could have taken the decision to escalate,' Ansari said. 'But because there was a chance for peace… we opted for that,' he said.
