From the Louvre in Paris to Hong Kong's M+, finding the art in architecture
architecture is a creative discipline . Once you factor in the technical aspects crucial to the process, it is even more impressive that art and engineering can come together for a visual spectacle with a civic purpose. Throughout history, there is no shortage of such examples, whether it is the buildings by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona or modern landmarks such as
Hong Kong's very own M+ museum by Herzog & de Meuron. Hence, there is no reason we can't appreciate architectural landmarks the same way we would a work of art.

Frank Leung, founder and principal of Hong Kong architectural firm Via and designer of the
ArtisTree venue in Taikoo Place , offers a quote from architect Le Corbusier that he likes: 'You employ stone, wood and concrete, and with these materials you build houses and palaces. That is construction. Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good, I am happy and I say: This is beautiful. That is Architecture. Art enters in.'

'That's where I think art and architecture are similar, in that different people will feel different ways about a space much like about a piece of artwork,' Leung adds.

And certainly, viewing architecture through an artistic lens means one will develop a deeper understanding of the design concept and, in turn, have a better appreciation of the space.

'Traditional artistic critique provides a framework to analyse and articulate the nuances of architectural design, enabling us to move beyond superficial judgments,' opine Elaine Lu and Vincent Lim of Lim + Lu, a Hong Kong interdisciplinary interior design firm.
'By borrowing from
the language of art , we can discuss concepts such as symmetry, balance, rhythm and texture in architecture. For instance, the repetition of forms or the tactile sensibility of materials can be understood as deliberate artistic choices, rather than purely functional decisions.'

Leung says factors such as colour, texture, proportions, overall composition, materials and technique – the same elements that help viewers navigate art pieces – are valid ways to critique architecture and interior spaces. 'It's true that not every building or space tries to speak to the people who interact with it. But I believe good buildings do send messages through having deeply considered intents around light, space, materials, and how spaces are experienced,' he adds.

James Bond museum in Thailand misfires, closing after only 1 day
The closure of a US$1.2 million James Bond museum aimed at wooing more tourists to southern Thailand after opening for only one day has prompted a lawmaker to call it a pointless project 'dressed up to impress' and demand accountability from officials. The state-funded attraction in Phang Nga, a tribute to The Man with the Golden Gun for showcasing the kingdom's multiple locations in the 1974 film, was built a year ago. But the museum has since become an eyesore, with its leaky roofs, broken exhibits and paint peeling off the walls. 'This was never a real plan. It was just a flashy idea with no follow-through,' said MP Phakamon Nunan, who revealed the museum's neglected condition after inspecting it on Monday. 'There has to be accountability. We can't just pour millions into vanity projects and walk away.' The administrators believed the decades-long appeal of nearby islands featured in the film would draw tourists to visit the museum, according to Phakamon.

Squid Game's final season breaks Netflix viewership records
The third season of Netflix's blockbuster series Squid Game racked up record viewership in its first three days, reinforcing the Korean survival drama's status as a global cultural phenomenon. The final season of the dystopian thriller logged more than 60 million views in its first three days – the biggest debut in that time frame – and ranked No 1 across all 93 countries with top 10 rankings, according to Netflix. That compares with the debut of the previous season, which drew 68 million views in the first four days. The runaway success of Squid Game highlights the enduring international appeal of Korean storytelling and Netflix's pivotal role in amplifying it. The series reflects deep-seated social anxieties while spotlighting South Korea's creative firepower. For Netflix, which has invested billions of dollars into Korean content, the challenge now is sustaining momentum with a pipeline strong enough to command global attention. Originally released in 2021, Squid Game was an instant hit and a cornerstone of Netflix's local-for-local strategy. The series remains Netflix's most-watched title of all time, amassing around 600 million views across its first two seasons to date. Lee Byung-hun as Front man in Squid Game Season 3. 'Ever since then, 80 per cent of Netflix members have watched Korean content and many of them still continue to do so.'
