Goa unveils tech-driven Road Safety Policy for 2025
Panaji:
State govt has unveiled a technology-led Road Safety Policy, 2025, to overhaul every facet of Goa's transport and road safety framework — by harnessing AI-powered surveillance and data-driven engineering reforms among other tools.
According to the policy, an AI-Based Traffic Management System will detect and document traffic violations such as speeding, helmetless riding, seatbelt non-compliance, and jumping red lights.
The system will also identify end-of-life vehicles, expired insurance policies, and stolen vehicles. The system will be created on the public-private partnership model to enable real-time implementation by integrating traffic information with law enforcement data.
To tighten control over driver licensing and vehicle fitness rules, the policy mandates the establishment of at least one automated testing station in every district, and at least one Institute of Driving Training and Research or Regional Driving Training Centre in the state. These centres will be set up under the public-private partnership model.
Goa will fully sync the Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) with the e-Detailed Accident Report system. These platforms allow the collection and cross-analysis of crash data from police, transport, highway, and health departments.
Training and sensitisation programmes will be conducted across departments, particularly for high-risk zones and black spots.
Based on the data from iRAD and traffic police reports, accident hotspots will be targeted for redesigns, including speed-curbing measures, improved lighting, pedestrian walkways, and better signage.
A dedicated 'lead agency for road safety' will bring under one umbrella all the major stakeholders, including traffic police, the transport department, the PWD, and the health department.
District and state road safety councils will convene regular reviews to track the implementation, plug enforcement gaps, and make data-backed course corrections.
Strict enforcement is set to become the norm, with 100% saturation set for high-security registration plates, vehicle location tracking devices, and speed governors on all transport vehicles. Non-compliance will result in licence suspension, insurance issues, and potential criminal liability. All fitness renewals will be tethered to these safety parameters.
Recognising that infrastructure alone cannot end road fatalities, the policy includes mass awareness and behavioural training campaigns. The TRUST (Traffic Rules Understanding and Safety Training) programme will be scaled up to re-train drivers with suspended licences.
Road safety education will also be taken to schools, colleges, and workplaces, evoking a culture of compliance rather than mere legal obligation.
An analysis of accidents in 2024 by the traffic cell of Goa police has revealed that straight roads account for over 81% of the accidents in the state. Around 73% of the persons who died in road accidents were two-wheeler riders. A total of 207 motorcyclists lost their lives in road accidents that year.
A senior police officer said that 97.5% of the accidents occurred due to rash and negligent driving, and 34.4% occurred on national highways.

After two-month slide, auto industry steadies for festive jumpstart
Domestic passenger vehicle sales increased about 1% in July, marking a slight recovery after two consecutive months of decline, amid persistently sluggish consumer demand. Companies are cautiously optimistic that sales will accelerate further during the coming festive season, starting with Onam later this month. As many as 348,000 cars, sedans, and utility vehicles were dispatched from factories to dealerships last month, compared with 344,000 vehicles in July 2024, according to industry estimates. Retail sales were flat at about 328,000 vehicles last month. At the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki , wholesale volumes were largely unchanged at 137,776 vehicles last month. Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales) said while Maruti has seen an uptick in bookings ahead of the festive season, starting with Onam in Kerala, conversions are slow. 'With the advent of the festive season, as things stabilise, we expect the demand momentum to pick up,' said Banerjee. Maruti Suzuki has so far recorded a 10% increase in bookings in Kerala. Korean rival Hyundai Motor India too saw sales dip by 10% to 43,973 vehicles in July. Tarun Garg, chief operating officer, said, 'While the overall auto industry has seen some softness in recent months, we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and product offerings.'

Volvo shifts gears, to offer both EVs & ICE models in India
Volvo Cars will continue to introduce both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in India, pivoting its earlier strategy of going all-electric amid slow customer adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Swedish luxury carmaker had last year said it will henceforth sell only electric vehicles in India in its bid to have an all-electric portfolio by the turn of the decade. Volvo's strategy mirrors those of other global car makers like Jaguar Land Rover, and Mercedes Benz who are revising plans to have an all-electric product range. 'The adoption rate (of electric vehicles) is different in different countries. And even within the country (in India), it's different across states,' said Malhotra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Artur Nogueira: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo He said government policies are crucial in deepening EV penetration in India, with states that have waived off road taxes seeing higher adoption rates among customers. 'We will continue to drive in electric cars and have a launch lined up later this year itself. But at the same time, we will continue to focus on ICE,' said Malhotra. Live Events EVs currently contribute about 25% of Volvo's sales in India. The market for such eco-friendly luxury cars is however still small though it is growing, according to the company. 'About a year back, EVs had started losing steam. We are seeing some uptick in the segment in the last six months. But customer needs are different across regions,' said Malhotra. 'Home charging is extremely important for customer comfort when it comes to owning EVs. In cities, where there are high-rises, charging electric cars is challenging,' he said, adding Volvo is seeing stronger EV adoption in states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi where there are low-rises and state policies are conducive. He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the XC60 SUV model. Globally, Volvo does have plug-in hybrids in its portfolio, but Malhotra said the company will only consider launching them in India if the tax structures are more conducive. India currently levies a Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate of 5% on EVs, and 43% on hybrids. Overall, Malhotra said luxury car sales in India, which had been outpacing the broader car market in the last few years, slowed in the first half of 2025 as volatile stock markets, and mounting geopolitical tensions hit demand among the country's rich, aspirational buyers. He however added that Volvo is on track to meet its sales target for this calendar year though industry growth is likely to be muted. Per industry estimates, around 22,900 luxury cars were sold in the first half of 2025, a 1.8% rise from a year earlier. Separately, Malhotra termed free trade agreements being inked or negotiated by the Indian government as a step in the right direction, which will help to grow the auto industry in the long run. 'The UK FTA has set a benchmark. While the one with the EU is still some time away, free trade agreements are good for the economy. India is seen as a market with growth potential. If any company were to invest in India today, they will only consider the scale available in the market here. With FTAs, the scale changes immediately as they open up access to many more markets globally,' he said, adding Volvo can also explore possibilities for expanding its footprint in India once the EU trade deal is finalised.

Maruti Suzuki shares slip 2% post Q1 results: Should you buy, sell or hold?
Shares of Maruti Suzuki slipped nearly 2 percent on Tuesday, following the release of its financial results for the June quarter (Q1FY26). The stock touched an intraday low of ₹ 12,416.60, leaving it around 9 percent below its 52-week high of ₹ 13,675, hit in August 2024. In contrast, the stock had bottomed out at a 52-week low of ₹ 10,725 in December 2024. Over the past year, the stock has declined 4 percent, though it has gained 15 percent year-to-date in 2024. Maruti Suzuki posted a 2 percent year-on-year increase in net profit, reporting ₹ 3,712 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, compared to ₹ 3,650 crore in the same period last year. Revenue rose 8 percent to ₹ 38,414 crore from ₹ 35,531 crore in Q1FY25. In a regulatory filing, the company highlighted continued weak demand in the domestic passenger vehicle segment during the quarter. Domestic sales declined by 4.5 percent; however, a strong 37.4 percent surge in exports helped offset the weakness, resulting in a 1.1 percent overall increase in total sales volume. Maruti sold a total of 527,861 vehicles during the quarter, including 430,889 units sold in India and 96,972 units exported. On the operational front, EBITDA fell 11.2 percent year-on-year to ₹ 3,997 crore, and EBITDA margin contracted to 10.4 percent from 12.7 percent in the year-ago period. Elara Capital maintained an 'Accumulate' rating on Maruti Suzuki, while raising its target price to ₹ 14,279, implying an upside potential of 15%. The brokerage highlighted that the key trigger for the stock lies in a revival in domestic demand, especially during the festive season. It projected FY26 domestic volume growth at around 1 percent, in line with industry expectations. Strong rural demand contrasts with weak urban demand and affordability pressures in the entry-level segment. The brokerage revised its FY26-27 estimates down by 2–3 percent but rolled forward valuations to September 2027 with a 25x PE multiple. JM Financial retained a 'Buy' rating and assigned a price target of ₹ 14,250, implying a 15% upside potential. According to the brokerage, the EBITDA margin of 10.4 percent in Q1FY26 was slightly better than estimates. Realisation improved to ₹ 693,832, aided by higher CNG vehicle contribution in the SUV segment. However, this was offset by higher raw material costs, sales promotions, and new plant-related expenses. The firm expects export volumes to remain robust, supported by models like the e-Vitara, Jimny, and Fronx. JM Financial anticipates a drop in ramp-up costs at the new plant starting from Q3FY26 and expects a better product mix to support future margins. Consequently, it revised EBITDA margin forecasts to 11.4 percent (FY26E) and 12.0 percent (FY27E), along with modest changes in EPS estimates. HDFC Securities maintained its 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹ 14,990, indication an upside potential of 21%. The brokerage noted that Q1 margins were in line with expectations and should improve as capacity utilization at the Kharkhoda plant ramps up. However, near-term challenges such as elevated steel prices and muted domestic demand may continue to weigh on performance through FY26. HDFC Sec is more optimistic about FY27, citing potential tailwinds from the 8th Pay Commission, tax cuts from the previous Union Budget, and pent-up replacement demand. On the export front, HDFC sees medium-term strength, attributing it to Maruti's efforts in diversifying its export portfolio.
