Steven Naismith responds to next Kilmarnock manager link

The National15-05-2025
The former Heart of Midlothian boss has quickly emerged as a frontrunner to succeed Derek McInnes at Rugby Park.
McInnes has been heavily linked with a move to Hearts with an approach made between the clubs over a deal to take him to Tynecastle.
It's expected McInnes will become Hearts manager next week.
The Kilmarnock manager will not lead the team for the final game of the season, against Hearts, with the club confirming the decision in a statement on Thursday.
Now, Naismith has responded to reports labelling him as a contender to take over at Kilmarnock and replace McInnes.
Asked about a possible return to Rugby Park, as a manager on The Warm-Up, he said: "I'm having a great time here. You flew straight in. No, I'm here!
"My things haven't changed. I will go serious for you and give you a good answer.
"I'm enjoying the time out. It takes over your life, management.
"Whether you say life/work balance, it doesn't. It's on your mind all the time. I loved it, but I've loved my time out.
"I'm at the point where everything needs to be perfect for me; the right club, you believe in what it is, and you're going to make a difference. That's where I sit.
"I have spoken to clubs in the past and I have just felt it's not been right, I will probably speak to clubs in the future and if that changes then my mind will change.
"I'm really relaxed and enjoy my life at the moment."
Naismith is currently away from the dugout after being relieved of his role at Hearts earlier in the season.
However, he has admitted he will return to management when the right offer comes along.
He added: "Everything in your life takes a back seat, whether you like it or not. See for me, that has got to be the way it is, you have got to be 100 percent committed and that is the focus. That is why it is so intense.
"The buzz of me being a manager and what I believe I can give when I am all in, I think I could be a success and I think my first year shows that.
"I'm not putting any pressure, I am not going to jump into a football club just to get back in, I don't think that is the right thing to do.
"If the right opportunity comes and it ticks everything and I'm ready, then I will do it."
A Kilmarnock club statement read: "It has been agreed between our Board of Directors, Derek McInnes and his staff that the best approach would be if they were not in charge for the final match of the season.
"Paul Sheerin and Alan Archibald will also not be involved – first team preparation and matchday duties will be undertaken by Chris Burke and Craig Clark.
"We look forward to seeing the blue and white army out in force this weekend as we give the players the send off they deserve.
"More information will follow in due course."
Charlie Mulgrew, Brian Graham and Steven Naismith appeared on The Warm-Up, the William Hill SPFL's weekly preview show. Check out the full episode here: https://www.youtube.com/@TheWarm__Up

Kilmarnock sign former Livingston goalkeeper Max Stryjek

Kilmarnock have continued to strengthen the squad for next season with the signing of Polish goalkeeper Max Stryjek. The 28-year-old former Livingston stopper has joined from Jagiellonia Bialystok for an undisclosed fee. Warsaw-born Stryjek had a spell at Sunderland earlier in his career before joining Eastleigh and spent two years with Livingston ahead of a switch back to England with Wycombe. 'It was a bit of work with the clubs, but I am really happy to be joining Kilmarnock and am looking forward to working with the boys and the staff,' Stryjek said on the club's website. 'I was in a spot in Poland where I wasn't really playing. It was a great experience spending a year in a new home, but it was a difficult year for me on a personal note. 'I want to do well, help the team get results and I am really happy that I am joining Kilmarnock.' New Killie manager Stuart Kettlewell has already brought in striker Marcus Dackers, Greg Kiltie, Jack Thomson, Scott Tiffoney and George Stanger. Kettlewell feels Stryjek's previous experience of Scottish football will stand him in good stead for the challenges ahead – with the Polish keeper set to go straight into the squad Rory McKenzie's testimonial match against Ayr at Rugby Park on Friday night. 'Max is one that I have been aware of for a while, especially with him playing in Scotland before, we know his qualities,' Kettlewell said. 'He adds to the already competitive squad and we are sure that he can be a solid addition to our goalkeepers.' James Penrice leaves Hearts training camp for AEK Athens talks

James Penrice has left the Hearts training camp in Spain for talks with AEK Athens over a move to Greece. The 26-year-old left-back is in discussions with the Greek side over a transfer worth seven figures to the Tynecastle club. Penrice joined Hearts from Livingston a year ago in a free transfer and was one of the standout players in an otherwise disappointing season for the Jambos. He made 46 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals, in the 2024/25 campaign. Hearts finished seventh in the Premiership following a turbulent season under three different managers. He is now set for a move to the Greek Super League, where he will join fellow Scottish left-back Greg Taylor, who recently signed for PAOK. AEK Athens, who finished fourth last season, are currently in the Netherlands for their pre-season training camp. Kilmarnock complete signing of former Livingston goalkeeper

The 28-year-old will provide competition with Robby McCrorie for the starting role Kilmarnock have completed the signing of goalkeeper Max Stryjek from Polish top flight side Jagiellonia Białystok for an undisclosed fee. The 28-year-old has previous experience in the Scottish top flight having spent two seasons at Livingston prior to a move to Wycombe Wanderers. ‌ Whilst at Livi, the Polish stopper competed with Robby McCrorie for the starting position - and the pair re-unite in Ayrshire. Both keepers failed to hold down the role on a consistent basis during their sole season together in West Lothian, before Stryjek earned rave reviews the following campaign for a string of fine displays. ‌ He played five times for Jagiellona last term, having joined them in the summer from Wycombe. Speaking to the club website after announcing the deal, the keeper said: "It was a bit of work with the clubs but I'm really happy to be joining Kilmarnock and I'm looking forward to working with the boys and the staff. "I was in a spot in Poland where I wasn't really playing. It was a great experience spending a year in a new home but it was a difficult year for me on a personal note. I want to do well, help the team get results and I'm really happy that I'm joining Kilmarnock. I'm looking forward to it." As for his conversations with boss Stuart Kettlewell, he said: "I was actually on holiday when he first called me and I was really impressed by his personality, his ambition and everything. "He seemed like a really good person and I really liked his approach and professionalism. That was probably the main factor in deciding to join Kilmarnock." Kettlewell added: "Max is one that I've been aware of for a while, especially with him playing in Scotland before we know his qualities. He adds to the already competitive squad and we are sure that he can be a solid addition to our goalkeepers. "We look forward to working with Max with the Premier Sports Cup kicking off next week after our two friendlies beforehand, starting with Rory McKenzie's testimonial match against Ayr United tonight."
