Brazil's Supreme Court orders house arrest for former president Jair Bolsonaro

Brazil's Supreme Court on Monday ordered house arrest for the country's former president Jair Bolsonaro, on trial for allegedly masterminding a coup plot to remain in office despite his defeat in the 2022 election – a case that has gripped the South American country as it faces a trade war with the Trump administration.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the case against Bolsonaro before the top court, said in his decision that the 70-year-old former president had violated precautionary measures imposed on him by posting content on the social media channels of his three lawmaker sons.
On Sunday, Bolsonaro addressed supporters in Rio de Janeiro through the phone of one of his sons, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro.
The trial of the far-right leader is receiving renewed attention after US President
Donald Trump directly tied a 50 per cent tariff on imported Brazilian goods to the judicial situation of Jair Bolsonaro, a Trump ally.
Trump has called the proceedings a 'witch hunt', triggering nationalist reactions from leaders of all branches of power in
Brazil , including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Following news of the arrest order, a member of Brazil's federal police told Associated Press that federal agents were currently at Bolsonaro's residence in the capital of Brasília to seize mobile phones, as ordered by de Moraes in his decision.
The source spoke on condition of anonymity due to their lack of authorisation to speak about the matter publicly.

Bangladesh protest victim, witness gives evidence in ex-PM Hasina trial

The first witness in the trial of Bangladesh's fugitive ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina gave evidence on Sunday, a man shot in the face during protests that toppled her last year. Hasina, 77, who has defied court orders to return from India to attend her trial on charges amounting to crimes against humanity, is accused of ordering a deadly crackdown in a failed bid to crush the student-led uprising. Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024, according to the United Nations. The first witness, among the 11 cases that the prosecution is expected to present to the court, was Khokon Chandra Barman, whose story reflects the violence of the protests. The 23-year-old wears a mask to conceal his face, which was ripped apart by gunshot during the culmination of the protests on August 5, 2024, the same day that Hasina fled Dhaka by helicopter. 'I want justice for the ordeal I've been going through, and for my fellow protesters who sacrificed their lives,' he told the court.

Father of children rescued in Colombian jungle in 2023 is jailed for sex abuse

Around two years after the spectacular rescue of four siblings from the Colombian rainforest, the father of the two younger children has been sentenced to 32 years in prison for sexual abuse. The public prosecutor's office on Saturday said the man raped his eldest stepdaughter several times from the age of 10. Following the crash of a small plane in southern Colombia in 2023, the four siblings, aged 13, 9, 5 and 1, spent 40 days in the rainforest until they were finally found by a search party made up of military personnel and indigenous people, in a case that made headlines worldwide. The man who has now been sentenced was involved in the search for his children and stepchildren. The children's mother, the pilot and an indigenous leader were killed in the accident.
