America used to fire the world's imagination – but now the cultural conversation is being silenced

This week, fresh data revealed the United States has seen its biggest drop in Australian tourists since Covid. It's hardly surprising. Innocent people are being snatched by authorities from American streets. Citizens of foreign countries are being stopped, shackled and detained. The EU is now sending its emissaries with burner phones, lest personal social media posts critical of President Trump be discovered by border agents and … who knows what happens next? Forcible relocation to a Salvadorian supermax prison, seemingly without chance of release, is suddenly not out of the question.
It all seems like something from Hollywood dystopia; the V series, maybe. Or Escape from New York. It's pretty much the plot line of the first season of Andor – which I strongly recommend that everyone watch before the Trump regime clocks what that show is advising and it vanishes faster than a copy of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl from an American high school library.
The harassment of visitors seems disproportionate. This is not merely because Americans were once champions of free speech, but because they used to champion democratic rights, the rule of law and statements of fact.
America isn't doing facts any more. Hence the defunding of science agencies and a political interference in education and research they are imposing on researchers beyond their borders. The Australian National Tertiary Education Union secretary, Damien Cahill, explains it with sad simplicity: Australian universities are having projects defunded 'because they don't fit with Trump's authoritarian rightwing agenda'.
As a tourist pitch for America, 'Come see Hamilton on Broadway!' had a stronger appeal. 'Experience Burning Man!' offered pure vibes and 'What Happens in Vegas …' was tempting to many.
It's a diverse world, people have diverse tastes. Some Australians long to see Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and Donald Judd sculptures in the context in which they were created. Some want to play blackjack at Harrah's with a jazz musician they befriend in a bar. Sometimes you want both of those experiences, so you return to America time after time, marvelling at the orange rainbow of autumn trees that inspired Rachel Carson to save American wildlife, and zipping along in a cable car like Michael Douglas in The Streets of San Francisco.
But no one goes anywhere to be trapped in a small room with border agents who call them 'retarded', insist they are a drug dealer and brag that 'Trump is back in town'… which allegedly happened to an Australian who had a valid working visa for the US, and was reported in the Guardian last week.
Similar stories have spread from our shared-language cousins the Canadians and the Brits. Friends are cancelling their holidays to the US, making the calculation that lost deposits are a smaller price to pay than the anxiety of risk. After a French academic was denied entry to the US over some anti-Trump messages on his phone, Australian academics have foregone conference travel for zooming in. The Victorian LGBTQIA+ commissioner, Joe Ball, has warned LGBTQIA+ Australians about the risks of travel to the country that once mainstreamed Queer Eye, Caitlyn Jenner, James Baldwin, Gertrude Stein and RuPaul. Ball has personally cancelled travel plans, revealing he did not want to make himself – or his family – unsafe. The Australian government's Smartraveller website has – like other countries – upgraded its travel warnings. Advice that consular assistance cannot help you at the border chills the blood.
There's a cost to this beyond the tourist dollars and economic impacts others will analyse. It's the great silencing of a cultural conversation once led by America, rooted in values of social freedom and personal liberty that influenced the imagination of the world. Watching a Melbourne production of Stephen Sondheim's Follies recently, it struck me that the cultural context of its creation – to address and critique the (musical) traditions and practices it inherited, its story of individuals confronted by the implications of their own free choices – is not the American hegemony any more. Every US cultural persona, text and institution I have mentioned in this piece, from cop shows to modernist poetry, articulates either a demand for freedom or an expression of how to live with it, however bravely or imperfectly.
This was the American greatness, and why its cultural products inspired everyone from the kids of conformist societies to the adults of deeply oppressed ones to engage with its values.
Once upon a time, America was not afraid to be asked by the rest of the world how well it managed to live those values.
Now you can't be sure what treatment awaits you at the border.
Those once Trump-positive politicians from Australia, Canada and the UK struggling to understand a paradigm shift in which the Maga hats they wore at Christmas have become a headwear mark of Cain are not adapting well. 'I don't know Donald Trump' doesn't work coming from a Peter Dutton who insists he could have landed special treatment regarding Trump's tariffs.
I suggest their problem is as politicians they're misjudging the current anti-Trump moment as policy fallout, when for ordinary TV-watching, book-reading, show-going, music-listening people, it's cultural grieving.
Australians and other world citizens are not merely declining to visit the United States. We have started to cease to imagine it.

Donald Trump has revealed that a pair of US nuclear submarines 'are moving closer' to Russia after he deployed them in response to an escalating war of words with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The move of the nuclear submarines to 'appropriate regions', which the US President described as a 'terrible situation', appeared to be symbolic – the U.S. already has a fleet of dozens of nuclear-powered subs that are constantly ready to strike in the event of a conflict. But tensions notched up another level as Trump admitted they were getting closer. 'They are closer to Russia yeah, it's a terrible situation,' he told Newsmax. It increases the tension once again after Trump announced he was moving up his ultimatum for Russia to agree to end the war. 'We had to do that. We just have to be careful. And a threat was made and we didn't think it was appropriate. So I have to be very careful,' Trump told reporters as he left the White House on Friday for a weekend at his New Jersey golf club. 'A threat was made by a former president of Russia, and we're going to protect our people,' he added. If Russia fails to strike a peace deal by the end of next week, Trump said he will impose punishing 'secondary sanctions' on nations who trade with Russia. Trump made the decision to deploy the submarines after 'highly provocative statements' of Russia's ex-President Dmitry Medvedev - who now serves as deputy of Russia's Security Council. The United States has a total of 14 Ohio Class nuclear-powered submarines, each capable of carrying up to 24 Trident II D5 ballistic missiles that can deliver multiple thermonuclear warheads up to 4,600 miles. Between 8 and 10 Ohio Class submarines are deployed at any one time, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative arms control group. Medvedev had called Trump's sanctions threat a clear 'step toward war,' clearly incensing the president. 'I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,' Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday afternoon. 'Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Medvedev, the former president of Russia who stepped aside when Vladimir Putin took a break from the top post, drew Trump's ire with his own post this week. 'Trump's playing the ultimatum game with Russia…Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don't go down the Sleepy Joe road!' he wrote. The United States has a total of 14 Ohio Class nuclear-powered submarines, each capable of carrying up to 24 Trident II D5 ballistic missiles Trump then tore into the Russian with angry posts around midnight Thursday. 'Tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he's still President, to watch his words. He's entering very dangerous territory,' Trump wrote. Trump's jabs at Medvedev, who is often a caustic critic of U.S. policy, allows him to steer clear of Putin – with whom Trump has shown obvious frustration in recent weeks, despite Trump often referring him to him as someone he can 'get along with.' Trump has lamented apparently positive phone conversations with Putin followed within hours by Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and towns. Trump's threats come after Russia launched yet another devastating attack on Kyiv overnight, which killed dozens of people and a six-year-old boy. Russia has routinely been sending swarms of hundreds of drones to attack Ukraine, with houses and apartment buildings suffering regular blasts. An estimated 31 people were killed and 150 injured during Thursday's attacks. Wrote Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in response while posting a video: 'Kyiv. Missile strike. Directly into a residential building. People under the rubble. All services are on site. Russian terrorists.' 'All disappointments come from inflated expectations,' said Russian President Vladimir Putin Friday in response to Trump's expedited deadline issued Monday In his own first public comments since Trump threw down his abbreviated ultimatum, Putin criticized 'inflated' expectations about ending a war he ordered in 2022 by launching a cross-border attack on Russia's neighbor. 'All disappointments come from inflated expectations,' Putin said. 'In order to solve the issue in a peaceful way, we need deep conversations, not in public, but in the silence of a negotiating process.' Trump's reference to nuclear subs suggests both their stealth and massive firepower. Each of the 14 Ohio-class ballistic missile subs carries up to 20 Trident II missiles, with a range of up to 7,500 miles and up to eight nuclear warheads, with 160 warheads in total. The warheads are capable of causing a 475-kiloton explosion, vastly more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Trump said last month at the White House while meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte that first lady Melania Trump had taken to raising the issue of the toll on civilians. 'I go home, I tell the first lady, "You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation." And she said, "Oh really? Another city was just hit,"' Trump told reporters. Those comments coincided with an increasingly tough verbal posture on Putin from the president, who has now threatened to slap new sanctions on Russia as well as its trading partners. Just weeks ago, the Pentagon had imposed a temporary freeze on arms transfers to Ukraine, reflecting a move in Trump's administration away from the pro-Ukraine position of President Biden's, which shoveled billions of military aid to Kyiv after Moscow's invasion. Trump and his team, meanwhile, have been fighting a rhetorical battle over a 2017 intelligence assessment that Russia preferred Trump in the 2016 elections.

Aug 2 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court late on Friday affirmed a lower court's decision temporarily barring U.S. government agents from making immigration-related arrests in Los Angeles without probable cause. Rejecting the Trump administration's request to pause the lower court's order, the three-judge appeals panel ruled that the plaintiffs would likely be able to prove that federal agents had carried out arrests based on peoples' appearance, language and where they lived or worked. President Donald Trump called National Guard troops and U.S. Marines into Los Angeles in June in response to protests against the immigration raids, marking an extraordinary use of military force to support civilian police operations within the United States. The city of Los Angeles and other Southern California municipalities joined a lawsuit filed in June by the American Civil Liberties Union accusing federal agents of using unlawful police tactics such as racial profiling to meet immigration arrest quotas set by the administration. A California judge last month blocked the Trump administration from racially profiling immigrants as it seeks deportation targets and from denying immigrants' right to access to lawyers during their detention. In Friday's unsigned decision, the judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit largely rejected the administration's appeal of the temporary restraining order. The judges agreed with the lower court in blocking federal officials from detaining people based solely on "apparent race or ethnicity," speaking Spanish or accented English, or being at locations such as a "bus stop, car wash, tow yard, day laborer pick up site, agricultural site, etc." The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the order a victory for the city. "The Temporary Restraining Order that has been protecting our communities from immigration agents using racial profiling and other illegal tactics when conducting their cruel and aggressive enforcement raids and sweeps will remain in place for now," she said in a statement. Mohammad Tajsar, senior staff attorney at the ACLU Foundation of Southern California, welcomed the ruling in statement: "This decision is further confirmation that the administration's paramilitary invasion of Los Angeles violated the Constitution and caused irreparable injury across the region."

Tim Minchin explains the ‘pretentious' reason he turned down hosting chat show

He might now have found success in comedy, music, television and theatre, but Tim Minchin admits that no one ever thought he was 'particularly talented'. The Australian creative, 49, was born in Northampton before his parents moved back to their home country, where he was raised in Perth, the most isolated city in the world. It was there that Tim initially pursued a career in the arts, studying contemporary music but as he admits, 'graduated without actually being able to read music'. Throughout his 20s, he wrote songs, played in bands, acted in plays, and composed for theatre, but struggled to get noticed. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Sarah, the couple moved to Melbourne, but it was still an uphill battle. 'I was 29 at that stage and really did think I wasn't very rock n roll or grunge or what people wanted and thought I'd just be a poor songwriter, but literally the next year everything changed,' he tells Metro on the day his latest album TimMinchinTimeMachine is released (the album is a curated anthology of previously unreleased material). 'It's only got more and more unbelievable with the things I've been able to do since. I was really struggling throughout my 20s to get any traction and couldn't get an agent or record deal,' he said. It was Tim's 2005 comedy show Darkside that saw him finally capture the attention of the right people. He went on to debut it at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where he received the Perrier Comedy Award for best newcomer. In the two decades since, Tim hasn't taken anything for granted, working his ass off, continuing to release music, featuring on a range of comedy panel shows, appearing in Californication, Robin Hood and The Artful Dodger, composing the Groundhog Day musical, and writing and starring in the comedy drama Upright. But it was being asked to write the music and lyrics for Matilda the Musical that changed everything. After it debuted in 2010, the show won a record-breaking seven Laurence Olivier Awards and has since gone on to be awarded four Tony's. Its success allowed Tim to achieve financial stability and make calculated career moves – including turning down multiple offers to host his own talk show. Reflecting on the decisions that could have made him a regular fixture on our screens (and undoubtedly rake in millions), Tim said he doesn't regret the risk he took. 'Lots of channels approached and asked me, but that just happens once you reach a certain level and start selling out arenas, which I did. They all asked me and asked what show I wanted to make,' he recalled. 'I said I was an actor and wanted to make drama and they went 'yeah right'. I said I didn't want to be known as a talking head. I've been asked so much over the years to host documentaries or shows…and I kept saying I didn't want to be a presenter, I wanted to be an artist. 'I'm not a trained actor or trained in composition and it takes a lot of suspending my self-doubt to go 'I think if I hold the line there's a chance, I might get to be an artist, not a comedian/ presenter'.' Although Tim admitted that might sound 'pretentious', he was willing to take that gamble – and it paid off when he was offered Matilda. '[That show] made me financially secure so I could take risks, but it also made me believe I was a real composer and could actually make things that could land in culture and not just be a fleeting joke. I was glad I held off on taking the big bucks. And once you're on a late night show you get famous and aren't walking the streets anymore,' he added. Despite his string of successes, Tim admits that he 'never really had one of those big career dreams' to chase. That admittedly felt surprising to me, after watching him become one of our shared home city's most successful artists. Coming from a city on the literal end of the earth, it's commonplace for young people to dream about 'escaping' their mostly middle-class existences. It's just as encouraged for parents to send their children out into the world, too, with Tim and I both sharing stints in London, a rite of passage for many. Although he has taken plenty of gambles over the years, Tim describes our shared 'luck' as one of the reasons he's been able to push himself. 'Some people think that daddy got me a car or mummy paid my rent but there was none of that. They were like 'good luck and here's $500 towards your first car'. It's a very Australian thing. I knew if everything went to shit though I could go home and had somewhere to sleep and that is unbelievable privilege and luck.' In 2013 advice he gave to university graduates at a commencement speech in our home city made waves, currently having over 5.6 million views on YouTube and being the basis of his recent book, You Don't Have To Have A Dream. In the speech, he imparted nine life lessons with his trademark wit and humour, with one surprisingly poignant line including: 'Don't seek happiness. It's like an orgasm; if you think about it too much, it'll go away.' More than a decade on and having just completed a tour of the UK to mark 20 years since his career took off, I ask what advice he'd now give to himself at the same age. Being incredibly candid, he explains: 'It's hard to imagine what advice I'd give myself. I worked so hard because I never thought I had the right to be an artist. My folks didn't mind that I wanted to be a muso…but no-one was ever telling me I was special. 'No one ever thought I was particularly talented…I never got the roles in the school plays. I just thought I had to work hard. I wouldn't want to give myself any advice that lets young me know that it works out ok because I might not have put my head down. 'The central lesson in the speech was to just be really, really good at what's in front of you and dedicate yourself to that and let the future take hold. That was something I did intuitively and now I look back and understand it to be a way of thinking. Just stop f***ing worrying about the ladder and take the next step.' So, what's the next step for Tim, who has had a notably hectic schedule for years now? More Trending 'I've got the Australian version of the tour in November and between now and then I am going to try and make a start on a new stage musical I am really keen on, but I can't talk about what it is,' he teased. 'And then next year I really want to write a TV show I have an idea for. I have two or three stage musicals I have ideas for. Next year needs to be a writing year. Even though I love touring, I've done it a lot a last few years.' Whatever it is, it's likely it will be a worthwhile gamble… Tim Minchin's new album, TimMinchinTimeMachine is out now.
