10 more SANDF members arrested for murder of Hawks officer

The Hawks arrested ten more South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members on Monday, 23 June.
This brings the total number of suspects linked to the murder of Lieutenant Colonel Frans Mathipa to twelve.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Singo confirmed that the group handed themselves over to the Hawks' serious organised crime investigation unit in Johannesburg.
All twelve accused now face charges of murder and kidnapping. The newly arrested suspects joined two previously detained SANDF members at the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The court postponed the matter to 1 July 2025 for a formal bail application.
A court order currently prohibits the disclosure of the accused's identities
Lt-Col Mathipa, a senior Hawks officer, was fatally shot while driving along the N1 near Hammanskraal in August 2023.
His attackers pulled up alongside his vehicle and opened fire, causing his car to veer off the road and crash.
Investigators have also linked one of the suspects to a separate case involving the kidnapping of two foreign nationals at a Midrand shopping mall on 29 December 2022.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out further arrests.

Two sentenced for 2020 matric exam paper theft

The Johannesburg magistrate's court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced two people who stole a 2020 mathematics matric question paper. Themba Daniel Shikwambana, 36, and Thobile Sweetbetter Duze, 48, pleaded guilty to theft. The Hawks said on November 16 2020, the department of basic education received information about a possible leak of a mathematics matric exam question paper. The department was alerted via a WhatsApp photograph which was later verified and confirmed to be a true copy of the 2020 Mathematics Paper 2 exam paper. Investigations revealed some pupils in Limpopo and Gauteng confirmed receiving the leaked paper via WhatsApp. The matter was then reported to the Hawks' serious commercial crime investigation team based in Pretoria for further investigation. 'On November 25 2020, Shikwambana, who was working at a printing company in Johannesburg where exam papers were printed, was traced and arrested in Orange Farm. 'Further investigation led to the arrest of Duze on June 10 2021 in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal,' Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Christopher Singo said. The accused appeared in court on several occasions culminating in their recent conviction. The court sentenced Shikwambana and Duze to a fine of R100,000 or 12 months' imprisonment, of which R50,000 or six months' imprisonment is suspended for five years on condition that they are not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension. The court ordered them to pay the fine of R50,000 in monthly instalments of R5,000 on or before April 2026.

More questions over Kunene's presence at the house of the suspect

Speaking to a TV channel Kenny Kunene claimed he was accompanying a young journalist from his own media company, hoping to help them land an exclusive interview with Katiso 'KT' Molefe about the murder case. Image: Facebook Who is the journalist Kenny Kunene says he was escorting? Which media house do they belong to? And why were they meeting a murder suspect behind closed doors with a sitting MMC present? These are the urgent questions facing both political and media circles following revelations that Kunene, deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Johannesburg MMC for Transport, was present at the home of Katiso 'KT' Molefe, the man now under arrest in connection with the 2022 assassination of musician Oupa 'DJ Sumbody' Sefoka. On Tuesday evening, PA leader Gayton McKenzie took decisive action by suspending Kunene from the party and announcing plans to remove him as MMC. He said this would allow an independent investigation to proceed without political interference. 'Kenny Kunene will be investigated by lawyers of good character,' McKenzie said during a live broadcast. 'I will be writing to the Johannesburg Council to remove him from his MMC duties. He will also step back from politics for one month. This is the hardest decision I've made.'Kunene has acknowledged being at Molefe's Sandton residence when police carried out the arrest on Monday. Next Stay Close ✕ Speaking to a TV channel, he claimed he was accompanying a young journalist from his own media company, hoping to help them land an exclusive interview with Molefe about the murder case. 'These are young journalists,' Kunene said. 'This would've been a great exclusive for them. It was a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.' However, Kunene has not named the journalist, nor has he disclosed which media outlet they were working for. No interview footage has surfaced. No article has been published. No public statement has been made by the mystery reporter, raising serious doubts about whether any legitimate journalistic activity was taking place. The lack of transparency has drawn strong criticism from political rivals and civil society. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for Kunene's immediate resignation, saying his version of events is implausible and his position as MMC is no longer tenable.'The explanation offered is laughable,' said Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, the DA's Johannesburg caucus leader. 'It is unacceptable that a senior city official was found at the home of a murder suspect. There are no circumstances under which this conduct is excusable.' She continued: 'If Mr Kunene was genuinely assisting a journalist, where is the journalist? Where is the content? The people of Johannesburg deserve honest leadership, not secrecy and political theatre.' Molefe, who is facing charges linked to DJ Sumbody's fatal shooting in Woodmead in November 2022, is expected to appear in court later this week. The attack left two people dead and another injured, and it shocked the entertainment world and public has maintained that he believes in Kunene's innocence but stressed that belief is not enough.'I believe him 100%,' McKenzie said. 'But I can't expect the whole country to. That's why we are launching this investigation, and we will be transparent with the findings.' Political analysts have also weighed in, pointing to the unusual nature of a politician introducing a reporter to a suspect wanted in a high-profile crime. Guilty pleas for duo in matric exam paper scandal

The Johannesburg Magistrates' Court sentenced Themba Daniel Shikwambana (36) and Thobile Sweetbetter Duze (48) on 23 July 2025 for stealing a 2020 matric maths exam paper. The court fined the pair R100 000 or twelve months' imprisonment, with R50 000 or six months of the sentence suspended for five years on condition that they do not commit a similar offence. They are required to pay the remaining R50 000 in monthly instalments of R5 000 by April 2026. Additionally, they received a three-year imprisonment sentence wholly suspended for five years. The leak was first reported on 16 November 2020 when the Department of Basic Education (DBE) received a WhatsApp photograph of the 2020 Mathematics Paper 2 exam paper. The image was verified as an authentic copy of the exam. A preliminary investigation revealed that some learners in Limpopo and Gauteng had received the leaked paper via WhatsApp. The DBE reported the incident to the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, which launched a probe. Police arrested Shikwambana on 25 November 2020 in Orange Farm, Gauteng, where he worked at a Johannesburg printing company that printed exam papers. Further investigations led to the arrest of Duze on 10 June 2021 in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal. Both appeared in court multiple times before their conviction.
