NGOs demand immediate release of Long Tepen protestors

Handout photo shows the two men currently under remand. MIRI (July 1): Sarawak non-governmental organisation (NGO) Keruan and Swiss NGO Bruno Manser Fonds (BMF) are calling for the immediate release of two Penan protestors from Long Tepen. The men were remanded for four days on Sunday to assist with an investigation under Section 103 of the Forest Ordinance. In a joint statement, Keruan and BMF called on the government to support the immediate release of the two men and to take action to stop logging in the area. 'The rights of indigenous peoples to their land must be respected and protected,' said the statement. The NGOs called for assistance on the matter from the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam). According to the statement, one other man escaped with minor injuries and reported the incident to the police. Komeok Joe from Keruan said while the Penan community from Long Tepen has repeatedly filed police reports against the destruction of their forests by a company, their rights have been ignored and their defenders criminalised. 'Instead of addressing the community's legitimate concerns, authorities have chosen to target those who stand up for their land and culture,' he claimed. According to the NGOs, Long Tepen folk filed police reports in September 2024, March 2025, and June 2025 against the logging activities of a company on their ancestral lands and the dismantlement of their blockades. Yesterday, Roland Engan, the lawyer for the two men, called on all parties to remain calm to allow the investigation and any possible prosecution to proceed without interference. The Sarawak Forest Department said in a statement that the two men were also being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for making criminal threats. The department claimed the two men were among individuals who had set up a blockade in Telang Usan on June 28 and used violence against the department's enforcement personnel while they were carrying out their duties by abusing and injuring them. 'These individuals also issued threatening words against enforcement personnel during the incident,' said the department. The department added another suspect fled the scene and is still being pursued. Bruno Manser Fonds Keruan Komeok Joe lead Long Tepen

Teacher loses RM890,000 to phone syndicate

GEORGE TOWN: A teacher lost RM890,000 after falling victim to a phone scam syndicate that falsely accused the victim of being involved in money laundering, in an incident reported here recently. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 59-year-old woman filed a police report yesterday at the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Northeast District Police Headquarters. 'According to the victim, on May 10, while at her home in George Town, she received a phone call from an unknown number, a man who introduced himself as a representative of a bank, then told her that a credit card had been misused in her name. 'The woman denied having the credit card, and the call was supposedly connected to an individual claiming to be a police officer in Johor who said that she was involved in a money laundering case,' he said in a statement. He said the police officer then asked her to transfer her money for audit purposes, and that the money would be returned after the investigation was completed. She claimed the police officer even threatened that an arrest warrant would be issued if she failed to do so, he added. Mohd Alwi said the victim made 27 online money transfer transactions to 23 different accounts from May 19 to June 5, involving a total of RM890,000. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which is for cheating.

T'ganu cops probing 25 lucky draw scam cases

KUALA TERENGGANU: Police have opened 25 investigation papers related to a lucky draw scam involving losses amounting to RM782,616. Terengganu police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the syndicate had illegally used the name of a local bank to commit the offences between January and June this year. He said victims received a link to download an APK (Android Package Kit) file via social media, which, when clicked, either directed them to a fake website or immediately downloaded the malicious APK file. 'This action allows the suspects to gain full control of the victim's device, enabling them to read TAC/OTP messages sent by the bank and access banking or e-wallet applications. 'The suspect would then carry out repeated transactions without the victim's knowledge, causing losses amounting to tens of thousands of ringgit,' he said in a statement, Bernama reported. DCP Mohd Khairi said the police are working with banks and Bank Negara to trace the transactions and identify the mule account holders. He advised the public not to fall for suspicious offers on social media. 'Never share OTP information with anyone, and immediately report to the Scam Response Centre at 997, or via the portal he said.
