Jamia's undertaking requires parents of new students to take responsibility for ‘conduct and character' of wards
Jamia Millia Islamia
has included a parental undertaking in its admission process, requiring parents or local guardians of newly admitted students to take responsibility for the "conduct and character" of their wards — a provision not seen in other central universities in Delhi.
The undertaking is part of a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) approved for admissions in April last year. According to an official document, the SOP was recommended by a committee constituted for the adoption and implementation of uniform guidelines to be followed by departments, faculties, and centres during the admission process. The recommendation was duly approved by the vice-chancellor in April last year.
In addition to the student's own declaration, the SOP includes a "Declaration by the Father/Local Guardian of the Student," which reads: "I hereby declare that I take full responsibility of his/her conduct and character as a student of Jamia Millia Islamia. I shall make myself available to the university whenever required."
While undertakings from parents on anti-ragging norms are standard across Indian universities, Jamia's broader clause placing overall responsibility for a student's conduct on the parent or guardian is uncommon.

The requirement comes against the backdrop of heightened administrative focus on discipline. In Feb, students held a sit-in protest near the central canteen of the university, demanding the revocation of disciplinary action against their peers. Following this, the university filed a police complaint, and several students later alleged that police officials contacted their parents, asking them to ensure their wards left the protest site.
During this time, students claimed that their personal details, including home addresses, were released by the university and pasted at the main entrance putting them under suspension — a charge the university later denied.
"Instead of talking to us, they contacted our parents and made them feel like we were causing trouble," said a second-year student who participated in the protest. "Now, they have come up with a parental undertaking to suppress any attempts of protest."
Jamia has banned protests on campus since the anti-CAA movement in 2019. Notices warning students against "unauthorised gatherings" have increased since early 2024.
TOI reached out to Jamia media cordinator Saima Saeed for a comment but did not receive any response.
A university faculty member, who did not wish to be named, said the parental undertaking was a "preventive measure" aimed at maintaining discipline and ensuring accountability from the start of a student's academic journey.
On other campuses, such as Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, parental declarations are limited to anti-ragging compliance and do not make guardians responsible for general behaviour of the student.
When asked about the presence of such an undertaking at their institutions, officials from these universities stated that they do not require parents or local guardians of students to submit any such declaration.

Man injured as IED planted by Naxalites explodes in Chhattisgarh
Bijapur, Aug 5 (PTI) A 24-year-old man sustained injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Naxalites went off in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Tuesday, police said. This is the second such incident in the district in the last 48 hours. The blast occurred around 8 am when the victim, Pramod Kakem, had gone to a rivulet for a bath near Gunjeparti village under the Usoor police station limits, an official said. He inadvertently came in contact with the IED, which exploded, causing injuries to his palms, he said. The official said Kakem, a resident of the Ilmidi police station area, had gone to his relative's place in Gunjeparti. The injured villager was provided preliminary treatment and shifted to a community health centre in Usoor, he added. In a similar blast on Monday, a 50-year-old man was injured in a forest near Pujarikanker village under the Usoor police station limits while he was grazing cattle, police said. The Maoists often plant IEDs on dirt tracks to target security personnel who use such routes during anti-Naxalite operations inside forests. Civilians have fallen prey to such traps laid by ultras in the past in the Bastar region, police said. Police have appealed to the public to exercise extra caution when visiting forest areas and to immediately report any suspicious objects or activities to the nearest police station or security camp. On July 13, three persons, including a minor girl, were injured in a similar incident in the Madded area of Bijapur. Around 27 people have lost their lives in Maoist violence in the Bastar region, comprising seven districts, including Bijapur, so far this year. 'She's human too': Christian Coleman defends girlfriend Sha'Carri Richardson after airport arrest
Image via Essentially Sports In elite sports, where fractions of a second define legacies, off-track turbulence can hit just as hard. That tension came into sharp focus when Olympic‑medalist Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested at Seattle‑Tacoma International Airport following a personal dispute with fellow sprinter and boyfriend Christian Coleman. As headlines spun narratives of anger and controversy, Coleman's words provided a counterpoint of empathy: 'a sucky situation all round,' he said. His reaction opens a window into the emotional pressure-cooker faced by high-profile athletes in crisis. It reframes the conversation away from sensationalism and toward humanity—and forces us to ask: when personal lives become public, how do athletes uphold grace under pressure? What led to Richardson's arrest and detention? On July 27, 2025, Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, charged with fourth‑degree domestic violence assault after allegedly pushing Christian Coleman into a column and tossing an object believed to be headphones during an argument at a TSA checkpoint. She was detained overnight at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, before being released the following day. (via. News Richardson later withdrew from the 100-meter semifinals at the U.S. Track & Field Championships and failed to qualify for the 200-meter final in Eugene, Oregon. Despite this, she retains an automatic berth in the World Championships in Tokyo due to her reigning 2023 world title in Budapest. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Celebrity Mugshot Hall Of Shame As Stars Isolated in Jail Instead Of Luxury Mansions Undo Neither the Port of Seattle Police nor her agent issued public comment on the incident. 'She shouldn't have been arrested': Coleman comes forward in support of his girlfriend Speaking to reporters at the USATF Outdoor Championships on Aug 3, 2025, Christian Coleman addressed the incident head‑on, calling it 'a sucky situation all round.' He expressed belief that Richardson 'should not have been arrested,' and emphasized that interpersonal conflicts can stem from heightened emotions, acknowledging that everyone has challenges to work through. Coleman added, 'She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, and mercy and love.' (via. New York Post) Christian Coleman Responds To Sha'Carri Richardson Situation After 100/200 At USATF Championships Coleman also acknowledged Richardson's emotional struggles, portrayed her as 'a great person' and 'the best female athlete in the world,' and emphasized the importance of mercy and understanding, 'She's a human being and a great person… She has a lot of things going on, a lot of emotions and forces going on inside of her that not only I can't understand, but nobody can. She's one of one. And I'm one of one too.' (via. Richardson, the 2024 Olympic silver medalist and reigning world champion, has navigated a tumultuous athletic journey—famously suspended in 2021 for THC violations and briefly removed from a domestic flight in early 2023. She also faced a February injury that delayed her season, as noted by both media and Coleman during his remarks. What might have become a tabloid spectacle instead became a statement of empathy and resilience. Coleman's response reframes a messy public incident as a deeply personal moment, marked not by blame but by compassion. In the aftermath of airport turmoil, their stories remind us: athletics is as much about mental strength as it is about physical speed. As both recover from this emotional flashpoint, fans and critics alike are left to ponder how high‑profile athletes rebuild grace amid public scrutiny.
