Gallops, fashion, punters bring out the heat at Hollywoodbets Durban July
The Hollywoodbets Durban July, Africa's Greatest Horseracing & Social Event, is an iconic spectacle of sport, fashion and entertainment where the latest trends meet the latest technology, to deliver an unforgettable experience.
The fashionistas and revellers went all out. The fashion designers have pulled together three pillars of Hollywoodbets Durban July fashion by showcasing the creations of nine Durban Fashion Fair Rising Stars designers, the creations from the top 10 finalists of the Young Designers Award and the stylish interpretations from the top six professionals.

The popular Race Day Fashion Competition for every patron saw winners in four categories, namely, Best Dressed Couple, Classic Racewear Male, Classic Racewear Female and Exceptional Hat / Fascinator.
Each creation was a reflection of this year's Hollywoodbets Durban July 'Marvels of Mzansi' theme – and what a display it was. Drawing on South Africa's vibrant tapestry of cultures, tribes and nationalities, landscapes, and wealth beneath our soil, to the more burlesque, unique elements that make us proud to be part of this colourful nation.
A total of 209 runners will grace the races. For the punters, the stakes are high:
Race 1 – Jackpot 1: R750 000
Race 2 – Bipot 1: R750 000
Race 3 – PA: R2.5m
Race 4 – Pick 6: R15m (R2m carryover)
Race 5 – Jackpot 2: R2m
Race 7 – Durban July Quartet: R10m (R1m carryover)
Race 8 – Jackpot 3: R3m (R500 000 carryover)

2Summers takes us on a tour of Brixton
Let's take a trip around Brixton, shall we? Through the eyes of someone whose own personal experience of this vibrant community, helps navigate this trip to spaces that are now pieces of her heart. Heather Mason, an American who left Washington DC for Johannesburg in August 2010. Read more: Brixton opens Putney Road to the community In that year, she experienced two summers, which lent itself to her calling her, now very popular blog, 2Summers. Through it, she allows others to see what enchanted her most about this city: Its people, food, culture, and art. 2Summers recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, and Mason grabbed at the opportunity to celebrate, as, due to Covid-19, she didn't get to celebrate her 10th anniversary. 'Today we're just going to do a walking tour around Brixton,' she said, together with her partner Thorsten Deckler, who led about 20 people through Brixton. First on the tour was Frayznix Vintage Rack, a clothing store that sells thrift clothes and has managed to keep its old Victorian-style building. Next, they stopped at local mosaic artist, Bronwen Findlay's art space, to see what art her and her team were currently working on. They also visited one of the community's oldest homes, found along Fulham Road. Its owner has a chicken coop, and they support him through buying the eggs his chickens lay. Another stop was at Dennis Dlomo's fitness club. 'Thorsten and I train with Dennis in the morning at Kingston Frost Park,' Mason told the tour group. Proceeds from ticket sales for the tour went towards buying new equipment for the club. Mason first lived in Melville for 11 years, before finding a certain kind of intimate quality in Brixton she had not experienced anywhere else. 'It has smaller houses, which are closer to the street. There's always activity on the street, which makes it's easier for you to walk out and greet people, and there's also a lot of creatives. I'm part of that creative community, so it makes it easy to relate to people.' She says her identity is tied to Johannesburg, and in that, more so to Brixton. The 18/1 shot delivered a performance that will be remembered for years to come and propelled master trainer Dean Kannemeyer to his fourth victory in South Africa's premier horse race. In front of an electric crowd at Greyville, the son of Gimmethegreenlight edged out race favourite Eight On Eighteen in a heart-stopping finish. After the race, Kannemeyer reflected on the strategy with a flicker of pride. 'You must come in at the right time with the right weight and the right draw — and we nailed it. The finish left the crowd on the edge of their seats. The runner-up, trained by Justin Snaith, showcased fierce determination despite the narrow loss. A three-time Grade 1 winner, Eight On Eighteen had hoped to become the first three-year-old to win both the WSB Cape Met and the Durban July in the same season. Only five horses have achieved this prestigious double: Kommetdieding (2022), Igugu (2012), Pocket Power (2009), London News (1997), and Politician (1979). Winning jockey Craig Zackey was beaming as he reflected on his maiden Durban July triumph. 'It's incredible,' he exclaimed, giving credit to The Real Prince's class. 'I think if he had one run in between, he would have won a bit more comfortably, but there were no races that suited him, and we couldn't afford the penalty.' There had been concerns that The Real Prince might be under-raced for Saturday's showpiece, but strategic preparation proved key. 'Where were we going to place him? "The first time we tried him over a mile, he won by six lengths. Great run in the Drill Hall,' Kannemeyer added. 'If we ran him in the Gold Challenge and he came fourth, the handicapper is going to be looking for you. You must come in at the right time with the right weight — and we got the right draw.'
